this is a timely video. i was working out at my Gold's" gym and noticed a young guy working out next to me with a yellow gold day-date. I struck up a conversation with him and he was schocked that someone knew what the watch. I told him I don't wear my steel sub to work out let alone a precious metal watch. He said he wasn't concerned and said watches were made to be wore.

i start liking the two tone Rolex now. Mi idea about watch collecting is to acquire de ones that I can wear almost all days and situations, beacouse I like to enjoy my watches. The full yellow gold is awesome for special moments, but not very practical. Maybe in 20 years I will change opinion

Is there any harm done if an automatic stops (power runs down) during a day/date change? For example, a Seiko skx, which takes 5 hours to complete the whole day/date change.

After owning a gold and steel Datejust, I decided to buy a day date. I ended up getting white gold because it looks like steel. It was a great decision. I don’t worry as much as if it was yellow gold.

Yellow gold rolex is beautiful but like you said, it can get you hurt or killed these days. I have a new steel GMT BLNR and I am paranoid wearing it out and about. I wear my steel AirKing without a care and not concerned about it being perfect and it has plenty of micro scratches. A white gold watch may help a bit. The gold value of a gold watch is far less than people think. 18K gold is only 3/4 solid anyway. I think I saw somewhere that the gold of an average gold rolex was around 20% of the weight. If you buy $35k worth of 24k gold, that is around 20 ounces of solid gold. So get a steel sport rolex and buy a one ounce gold coin to keep in your pocket. You will be happy and save a lot of money. Take the coin out and look at it from time to time.

Great advice Marc. Personally I declined a Gold bluesy from the AD for the reasons you say, despite loving the piece. For the same total cost the AD supplied me the James Cameron,, Hulk, Sea Dweller 43 and Airking. For me the pleasure derived from those 4 watches outweighs that from the gold sub. Would like to know which slip covers you use Marc, sound really effective.

You brought up so very valid points. The one about watch spotters in restaurants is unsettling but very real. For me a bi metal Rolex would be as far as I know go with a Rolex. I'm already nervous enough out and about here in Atlanta with my new Steel Sub.

I was wearing my Bluesy under my motorcycle jacket and it developed the same tiny scratches on the gold PCLs. So, I stopped wearing it when I rode my bike. I have taken it in the ocean many times though. If you feel unsure just send it to me and I'll put it through 5-6 years on my wrist like I have my Bluesy and I'll post a review of how I think it wears after that time. ;)

Interesting topic , good vid mark. I have no trouble wearing my steel sports piece or 2 tone. Majority of people , average public don't know lot about watches. Being at the office few years ago , come across 100s of people only 3 knew what I was wearing , who commented. At same time depending where I go , need to stay alert and vigilant. Long sleeve to cover and avoid dark alley ways where's there's a group of people obviously avoid. Otherwise enjoy your timepiece

Marc, I have a BLNR and can't seem to wear it out anymore because worrying to lose it or it may attract bad people. What to do now? Not to mention that I won't be able to replace it if anything were to happen to it. It is impossible for the AD to sell me one again due to the hype. Am I missing out and over worrying about this whole thing? It's hard to wear a Rolex nowadays due to the hype and the pretentious image it projects.

A steel Rolex sports model is about as close to Alchemy as you are going to get. You buy it as steel, but if the watch becomes sought after, it will hedge inflation just like Gold.

These days I wear my only gold watch to funerals pretty much exclusively. Other than that, my most expensive watch is about $1200 and most of them are more like $500. I'd be afraid to wear that one anywhere really. Plus even if you survived the robbery and they reimbursed you what a new one would cost (but they wouldn't because they'd probably reimburse you for retail price) you probably couldn't even find another one.

I understand people being selectively suspicious when choosing their watches and in certain places, this may well be a wise thing to do but I wear my RM 035 02 where I like and have only ever been asked about it, by a handful of people. The Platona tends to get attention as does the Messidor but most people don't care what we wear, less even recognise what they are. Rolex have become a victim of their own success, as has Hublot and Audemars, allowing their sports models to be 'sported' by social media commentators, music celebrities and certain sport players. Of course, many of these people's fans aspire to be like them, mostly without the hard work, dedication and talent but it is the media that are to blame, for allowing these iconic figurines of success and wealth to be rubbed in their face and almost baiting society, to want them.

Some great comments Marc. Before a watch purchase ask yourself "Where would I wear this watch?" and "When and how often would I wear this watch?" these questions I guess could be relevant to all watches. Certainly with they are more important with luxury brands and certainly Rolex. I would now think twice if I were to wear a steel Rolex to a restaurant from your story, I wouldn't wear it down the pub either. While I love that gold bluesy of yours it would spend most of it's time in the safe, I still want one at at some point if I become fortunate enough to afford and justify it. Hold on to your watch Marc, it won't loose you money even if the times you get to enjoy it are fewer than you like. And keep those stickers on if you have concerns on scratching, it's your watch after all.

Just doesn't do it for me... too much bling for my taste. Totally agree that you are a BIG target wearing such a watch. I was told by a jeweler from London (I was wearing my Omega Planet Ocean) on a flight to Paris that I should not be wearing an expensive watch while traveling. She specifically told me that they (muggers) will wait outside a restaurant to steal your watch. By the way, you'd be lucky if they only rough you up.... I had a coworker mugged for his watch in France and they literally put him in the hospital. Be careful where you wear that one! Japan is/was the only place where I actually felt safe wearing a Rolex.

That is not a reason not to own something like this. I've been to places like the Philippines where you could get mugged just because you are white and people think you are rich. I wouldn't even get my Smart phone out in public in some areas. Luckily I live in a place where I can wear something like this without too much attention. If you live somewhere where you think its too dangerous then maybe you should move somewhere a bit safer.

LOL That was a year ago, I’m 6’3ft tall with giant wrist and tried the Daytona, it looked like a girl’s watch on me lol, the Submariner looked like my little brother’s watch, so I got the Sea Dweller 43mm red letter and the Sea Dweller 43mm Two Tone, also the Skydweller Blue 42mm as my dress watch, those are my sweet spot 👌🏽. I hope they come out with a solid gold James Cameron 44mm for me this year 🤤🙏🏽
