The Rolex Learning Center by SANAA in the Swiss city of Lausanne is a one of a kind building that challenges some of the most fundamental architectural concepts. During this video we will try to explain what makes this building so unique, the challenges it had to overcome and the questions it raises for all architects moving forward.
The Tokyo based studio SANAA, formed by Kazuyo Sejima and Rywe Nishizawa are amongst the top architectural firms in the world. Their unique style and understanding of architecture has granted them international recognition, and their buildings rarely fit into what most would consider “normal” or “standard”.
Even though the Rolex Learning Center might look like a simple building, it is not. It is a complex design from it’s concept to it’s execution, but it is in these complex and unique challenges where SANAA thrives, and in the Rolex Learning Center was no exception.
Join us while we discover and analyze this amazing building.

I am wondering, what is the reason for organicly shaped spaces like atrium and other microspaces in interior of the buidling? If I am buidling a concept why is per example organic form better then the square one? Thank you for the video!

Hey @mislavification. I wouldn't say that organic shapes are better, or worse. I think what makes this building interesting is that they took one idea and they pushed it to its limits. In our opinion, when a project does that the results are always interesting and worth studying. This does not mean all buildings should be one way or another though. In this particular place, for this particular brief, and with a healthy budget SANAA's solutions seemed to works pretty well, but each project is different.

Thank you for quick response, yes I do agree. But I am wondering how can one define the reason beneath the organic form , not for this exact project ?
