In this episode of "What Is On My Wrist" Cam talks about Rolex OysterQuartz and reviewers a 1978 Rolex OysterQuartz Datejust (Ref.17000) with a "Buckley" dial. In the late 1970s and early 1980s Quartz timepieces were dominating the market and yes even Rolex was affected by what is now known as the "Quartz Crisis" of the late 1970's and of the early 1980's.
It would be a mistake to think that quartz watches were an afterthought for Rolex, even despite Rolex's strong dedication to mechanical movements, Rolex began to realize that this type of product could establish itself on the market, and this was proved to be a fact in the following years to come. The Rolex Oyster Quartz production range having lasted less than 3 decades makes the entire range of Rolex Oyster Quartz highly sought after and extremely collectible. It has been estimated that in all less than 25,000 total Oysterquartz watches were ever produced by Rolex.

Love the bracelets on these. They sorta look like digitized versions of the oyster and jubilee. Very polygonal. Fitting for the quartz version of these. Awesome video guys

Price-wise the boat has well and truly been missed but they’re still a great example of a period of Rolex History. Would love to see a 1530 review.

Great review Cam. I had a 17000 buckley and sold (too soon) around 4 years ago. Since then, have searched high n low for a blue dial 17013...to no avail. A simply fantastic watch, horologicaly important with a v.special movement, so undervalued til today. Missed the boat! Get one for your collection Cam! Keep up the great work

You know that Rolex still changes the dial for around 600€ to every color you wish, right?

These are also high accuracy quartz, if memory serves around ten seconds a year. I prefer these over the Beta 21 watches as they are much more robust movements and a much longer battery life and I believe Rolex still service them! My personal favourite is the yellow gold Day Date version, I mean, if you want to piss off snobby watch collectors who think only mechanical movements matter then go big, go gold! :) I love your broad interest in this hobby Cam, it’s refreshing to see!

They will service them but they can be pricey honestly

@@leomedina5614 yeah, it’s Rolex after all but in this case I think it’s worth it as it is a specialist movement. I would not have an issue with my local high quality watchmaker servicing the normal mechanical Rolexes of the same era as thankfully they are all solid robust simple movements but these quartz ones I feel need Rolex at the helm and considering their value increases year on year it’s worth the expense I feel. Having said that, would have no problems with my watchmaker doing a battery change. I have a vintage GP with their first quartz movement and do that myself as I have the case tool but as you know, Rolex have their own design which is not cheap!

@@ianmedium I definitely agree. I bought mine for $500 my Oysterquartz but it didn’t came with a band so as you can tell I wanted to have it restored. It cost me roughly $3500 with a bracelet included which is a lot of money to me because this is my very first Rolex ever...... but I’m supposed to get it this Friday and I’m very and super excited to wear it!

@@leomedina5614 Congratulations, I am still kicking myself for not getting one when they were much cheaper. It is an incredible movement and a real piece of horological history I think. And looking around, you are ending up with a watch freshly factory service with the correct bracelet for well under what a similar model would cost you unserviced, I think you have ended up with a bargain! One of the things I love about these old high quality quartz watches is the way the seconds hand ticks. This is the same as my GP from 1973 in that it has a lot of mechanical parts operating that bit and so the seconds hand ticks like a deadbeat seconds mechanical watch. There is a cushioned, damped look to the way it strikes the seconds that gives it such a quality feel.

@@ianmedium If you have social media I’ll be more than happy to send you a video. I have the blue dial but it’s nothing like a blue I’ve seen it’s beautiful!! I know this are rare and I wanted to sell it to buy an automatic but honestly this is a piece that truly stands out from everything else.
