Meanwhile here in the US my truck came standard from the factory with no airbags, doesn't have a roll cage or multipoint harness, the cab pillars themselves are measly as hell. Its a standard cab 93 Ford Ranger XLT for reference. My insurance is surprisingly even lower than I expected it to be considering it didn't have airbags, it's a similar year to my mom's old truck with air bags and I'm paying like $7 a month for the most basic PIP and property damage plan. Mom had a similar plan but with partial coverage for damages and was paying like $127 a month. Also since I'm in a state that only inspects out of state vehicles once to initially register them, we're pretty much free to do any modifications so long as they don't create excessive noise. That's about the only time you'll get pulled over and checked for illegal mods lol.

He never said anything putting them in a daily driver, he only said it's a waste of money for a street car, which isn't necessarily 100% true. Chances are, if someone is putting a cage in a street car, they're driving that car pretty hard on the streets or maybe even take it to the track, so if they get in an accident on the track or crash it while driving irresponsibly on the streets, it keeps them safe, and also helps the car's handling by reinforcing the chassis. Just because it's a street car does NOT mean it's a daily. Prime example: Tom Bailey's street car.

What does he mean by making roll cages "too strong"? A cage shouldn't absorb energy. All the stuff outside the cage absorbs energy and gets wrecked in the process. but a soon as the cage starts absorbing energy and folding, your survival zone is compromised. Also, if you are wearing a helmet, harness and hans device, as you should in a caged car, you care less about getting a "soft crash" that puts less load on your neck. I don't care if the car flips over five times and ricochets of a barrier. Rolling a bunch or sliding around also dissipates energy, and if my neck is safe anyways I prefer that method of energy absorption because it doesn't require deforming the structure that's keeping me safe

Imagine an egg drop competition. Drop the egg in a steel box and it breaks. That's what a roll cage that is too strong will do to your body. Drop the egg in a medium that can absorb and bend with the forces, and the egg will not be broken. Having a roll cage that can still absorb forces and direct them away from your body is important.
@justanothernobody982
@justanothernobody982 Жыл бұрын
@@xxslayer255xx Good point, thats why I always wear a seat belt, and if a car has a roll cage then it probably also has racing seats and a 6 point harness so as long as I buckle up (which I always do) the harness will always hold my body in place preventing my head from hitting anything, honestly the more likely way I would die is by the whip of my neck in a crash causing my neck to snap But some idiots dont wear their harness/seatbelt so for them yeah I can see how having a roll cage is more dangerous
@xxslayer255xx
@xxslayer255xx Жыл бұрын
@@justanothernobody982 a HANS device can save your neck from snapping in the event of a crash. It was revolutionary for the safety of racing and I highly recommend one. However, even if in bucket seats with a 6pt harness and a HANS device, an improperly built roll change can kill you. If the car can't crumple around you and absorb the impact then your body is absorbing it. Too much rigidity and it is still analogous to the steel box and egg. To drive the point home, I'd recommend watching Mark Rober's egg drop video from years ago where he used straws. He shows two different methods of arranging the straws: one that directs the forces away from the egg and one that directs the forces into the egg. You want your roll cage to act like the first regardless of seat, harness, HANS device, etc.

Yeah. In regards to daily drivers. Roll cages are more hassle than they're worth. Heck, in some cases they can be more dangerous if the jaws of life can't get through, or you have a suspected spinal injury (GT3 cars have an extraction door on the roof for this reason). Not to mention hitting the rollcage would hurt like hell, and then you've got the potential for skull impacts. Which could very much kill you in an otherwise survivable crash. You can't move around more than maybe a few mm in a race car, and you've got a helmet. Same can't be said for a road car which requires you to be able to turn your head around for reverse parking and merging.

As the owner of an 80s toyota truck that is slowly being built up for offroad trails, a roll cage will make it much safer because in the event of a rollover the pillars will crumple accordion style and bring the roof directly into contact with my head. I would rather a truck with a lot of dented panels and a concussion than a dead me inside a now roofless truck. For a go fast nyoom car that is also street driven? make your own bad choices or something, I'm not your parents.

Not just a helmet but a HANS device that clips to your helmet and goes under your harness to prevent your head being whiplashed and causing injury!!!!!!

if done right, you can get a shop to weld one onto your chasis. Avoids the spearing an adds body resistance.

NB Miata went up angels crest in Los Angeles, guy slides onto the mountain, his car flips, guess which side didn’t completely cave in? You guessed it, his side where the roll cage had the ( \ ) on it , don’t get rep parts like cages, wheels, tires, also I recommend cages with the ( X ) and not just one bar across, also If you track your car, some locations ask that you have a roll bar. If a car can withstand the force of it being flipped on its back, and not cave in, I think street use will be just fine. Say no to reps y’all

There is a video floating around of a turbo foxbody street racing, getting loose and hitting a light pole. No roll cage, the car ended up in 3 or 4 peices of mangled up metal. Had it been caged properly the cwr would have stayed mostly intact. This post is very misleading and people listening to what you are saying can be hurt.

If I'm putting a roll cage in my WRX in the future, my car has earned having a roll cage in it. Because I decided to race the car on a track and put in a full racing harness and got a proper helmet.

I would say that a roll cage is meant to stop the top of the car from collapsing. The same reason why people put headache racks on trucks.

Have you ever wondered how racers walk away from accident over 100mph. Mainly due to the roll cage but yes with a 6 point roll cage you should wear a helmet. But a 4 point does not facilitate a helmet for daily use

So what should the guy who wants a stiffer chassis, and some roll protection, BUT ALSO wants street seats and airbags do? Like, I want to be held in my car better, but still have the "break free" effect so my head isn't whipped. It just seems like there are no middle ground products, so you either do without and have no clout )or vehicular improvement) or you add stuff to your car that's really gonna hurt you when push comes to shove.

The way I see it, if your car or truck regularly sees track use and the track requires some kind of cage, get it, its needed. If its your daily that can boogie, maybe get one, but it's not needed. If it's your clapped out mustang or civic that rattles like a tin can full of bolts and twerks harder then miley on a bender, don't get one, sell your car.

So many people fit full cages in their stance/non committed racing builds and I laugh when I see it. Crashing a full cage car without a helmet simulates taking a baseball bat to the head. If you want a cage in your street car where you aren’t wearing a helmet every time you drive it, get a half cage or at least one that’s designed so that your head is clear in the event of a crash.
