Hey KZbin, I wanted to share with you my adventures up on the roof of the Epic Timber Frame jungle gym and the roof system I put on it.
Don't forget to follow ‪@schufledoes‬ on Instagram ‪@schufledoes‬ and on Tiktok ‪@schufledoes‬
This is my process for how I applied rolled asphalt roofing. I chose to do this style roofing vs a traditional shingle style mainly because of the amount of nails that would stick out beneath the roof. My family and friends that will enjoy this wonderful jungle gym dont need to knock their head on any nails sticking through the roof. I guessed I saved somewhere around 1,000 nails not going with a typical shingle and only going every 12" on the horizontal and 3-4" on the vertical.
Hope you enjoy this one, 90degress in full sun is not how I wanted to spend this weekend doing the roof, but it needed to get done and now I am dry underneath.

Thank you sir! I agree, not much info on roll roofing on KZbin. I roofed for 6 months, as a gruntboy, so I picked up old shingles, carried shit, ran up and down ladders, and I mostly just fed the real roofers the 3-tab shingles. I now have a shed that hardly has any pitch and figured roll roofing was best. I have all I'll need, material-wise, except for my father-in-law. Something happened, none of us know what, but he won't speak or acknowledge any of us while staying here. So we're taking him home tomorrow and I'll be doing the roof alone. Like you, this is my first go at the roll roofing. Thank you for this video. It will really help me out.

You're the only other person I see sitting on the roof while you're working besides me. lol I am scared of heights and never even been on a roof before, but our home needed a full tear off with sheathing too so I figured let me give it a shot. Couldn't afford the 30,000+ quotesd we were getting. Sitting up there definitely made it more manageable for me. And its only a 6/12 pitch, but I still freak out.

Everyone says rolled roof doesn’t last as long as architectural shingle but I have a section of rolled roof that is the same age as the architectural shingle and the shingles started failing first. Rolled roof is still fine and might be extended with a coat of silicone roof coat or two. Seriously wondering if rolled roof would be better to redo the whole roof with it on a 3/12 pitch.

Many years ago all one seen was either tin/metal roofing or rolled roofing . Most were metal and then came cheap roll roofing and then shingles etc . Roll roofing is a fairly easy process and does not require to much work, not like shingles or today's metal roofing. We rolled it out started at the bottom edge and worked up to the top, we would use a tar mix at each joint that lapped over the other just in case and around all nails and later after done would go back and place that tar over each layer that overlapped the other so no seam was ever exposed, neither was any nails , that was the only hard part and that was because you stayed bent over or setting a lot putting on that tar and there were never any leaks or issues. It was used on houses, garages, shelters etc etc . And I see the price sure has gotten high like everything else now days

What are your thoughts on using this for a patch on a house? I've tried to seal a leak without any luck. The shingles look fine and I see no place water could get into the house. Looks aren't impotent as is on the back, but I'm going crazy with a roof leak.
@schufledoes
@schufledoes Жыл бұрын
To be honest I would not use this for a patch job if you have a leak. Get up in your attic and see if you can find where its coming from. If you can find the bad spot then grab yourself a Roof Snake Tool off amazon or similar and you can easily pop shingles out and off anywhere on the roof. Find the issue and fix it, then splice the same shingles or new back in with that Roof Snake Tool. If the shingles look fine, it could be an issue with the underlayment not shedding water correct and finding a problem up stream than is finding the weakest point. You can email me if you want more specifics schufledoes@gmail.com. Thanks for watching.

Hi, I have rolled asphalt on top of my indoor patio addition. I have plans of sticking a pvc pipe up through this stuff. What kind of pipe flashing would I use and how would I cover up the flashing?
@schufledoes
@schufledoes Жыл бұрын
Hello, thanks for the view. I would recommend a metal flashing piece with integrated rubber flexible boot. Cut in the flashing so the up slope end is under roofing material and low side is over the roofing. Then make sure it's in a good bed of sealant all around and seal the holes to the roof and then around the pipe.

@schufledoes

I would say it depends on the application. Manufacturers recommend a felt underlayment or some sort of composite underlayment. If it's going on a home, I would say no to direct application to sheathing. Thanks.

Are you supposed to put all those surface nails in it? Especially at the edges? Seems like a lot of potential leak possibilities?
@schufledoes
@schufledoes Жыл бұрын
Yea, it is a fair amount of nails going through. However, it is suggested from the manufacturer. These are also nailed through a good amount of that roofing tar at all seams and edges further sealing the nails. Nothing has leaked through any nails in the first year yet.

Why is roll roofing the preferred thing on low slope roof? Is it that it remains unbroken for large spans of distance so it can move the water easier than if it was a bunch of shingles?
@schufledoes
@schufledoes 4 ай бұрын
I'm not sure it is preferred on low slope. Typical asphalt shingles can go down to 4:12. Some say rolled asphalt roofing can go down to 2:12 which I think is the absolute minimum I would ever go. Likely not going under 4:12. Once your below 2:12 your looking at a monolithic sheet membrane like a rubber roof or TPO or similar. Some reasons why this can go a lower slope than an asphalt shingle is the seam and how more likely water can back track up and under the tab of the typical shingle at low slopes. Hope that helps

A stong wind is going to lift the roll roofing and it will tear off since it's only glued and nailed on the edges. Also, since it is loose over 90 percent of the area, the heat from the sun is going to soften, expand, and wrinkle it. Rolled roofing is supposed to be a full spread adhesive installation over the decking. No roofing felt is necessary. If you staple down roofing felt, then full spread adhesive and install rolled roofing, then the only thing holding down your roof is staples, the whole thing will blow off, even if you nail the edges! If you fully spread adhesive for the felt, then again for the roll roofing, you are overdoing it since roll roofing is like thick roofing felt with granules embedded in it. The seams can be nailed under the overlap. The edges on the overhang can be nailed. They won't leak and, if they do, the leak will not be into the living space, it will be outside. Some rolled roofing has the underside with adhesive already installed. You just peel and stick, not to felt, to the clean, preferably new OSB decking! Roofing felt is only for individual shingles where you are going to shoot a million nails to hold the roof on!
@schufledoes
@schufledoes 6 ай бұрын
Thanks for the comments. Nothing blown off and we have had 2 storms with 45ish mph winds. My comment to gluing the full surface is that it isnt neccessary. If you have a positive connection around all edges there will be nothing for the wind to catch and then eventually blow off. So if all your edges are correctly fastened it should stand up to some good winds. Also the south facing roof doesn't show any wrinkles yet. We have some good temp swing with being 100's on install and right now it's-15. Thanks again!

@@schufledoes Well, basically, every single roof up there is asphalt roofing despite the angle. Only saw one roof which looked to be wood shingles or smth. Asphalt seems to be the best answer to the constant storms, snow, rain wind etc. Mostly we did it on 45 degree roofs with torch and Icopal product (10m long 1m wide) And since it wasnt a flat roof but a visible one we had to make it look good so alot of stuff had to be constantly tracked Dont think that slabbing on that black glue is sufficient with all the storms.

It would have been better to have used shingles on a roof that has that much slope. With a minimum slope of 2 1/2 inches per foot -a shingle roof will last at least 25 years using cheap 3-tab shingles and far longer using architectural shingles-40+years. Roll roofing last 10--12 years. Your work looked very nice.
@schufledoes

Bob Bailey, thanks for the comments. Main reason for the rolled roofing is to avoid nails! There will be many adults and children in close proximity to the underside of the roof and I want to avoid as much as possible someone getting a nail in the head. Rolled roof with a nail pattern like I did only has a few dozen nails showing that I cut off. If I did a traditional shingle I am probably looking at close to 500 nails on the 4/12 side and maybe 300 nails on the 6/12 side. thanks for the comments and views though.

You did it your way, but you did not do it the right way. 1st of all your "Base Paper" should be at least 30# felt, but should be an actual base paper which is heavier. It should be nailed down with 1" headed tin caps, Plastic caps would work too. Using staples will not allow your base to hold down enough. A heavy wind can easily pull this roof off. By using the 1" headed caps the base will hold down during heavy wind. You do not want exposed nails as they will work loose in time from the heating and cooling of the nail. You also should put "dots" of Plastic Roof cement throughout the middle of the base paper to keep the 90# held down in the middle and from wrinkling over time. You do not need to nail the outside edge through the 90# or the bottom edge as the base 1" headed nails and the plastic cement will keep it held down. THIS VIDEO IS NOT A GOOD GUIDE.
