Front Seat POV on the Roller Coaster at Great Yarmouth Pleasure Beach, England. This is one of the few remaining traditional scenic railways with a brakeman regulating the speed due to the lack of up-stop wheels. Enjoy this piece of history!

I used to holiday on the Broads during the early 60s. Our second night mooring at Great Yarmouth. The third day spent in the town. My first memory was walking down Regent Road with all the souvenir shops. The ABC Cinema and The Regent. The Wax Works, then the prom. Britannia Pier and Joy Land with it's Tubs And Snails rides. The small Zoo on the prom and two indoor Fun Fairs. I remember one having The Alpine Chair Lift which was later sent to the Pleasure Beach. The other indoor Fair had a Virginia Reel. Instead of tubs, they had toboggan cars. It wasn't until our second year that we discovered the Pleasure Beach after taking a bus to the Amusement Park. It was lunch time and closed. We repeated the trip later in the day. It was wonderful. I had to pluck up courage to ride the Rollercoaster, yes, the second drop was scary because it was hidden from view. I have ridden the Coaster many times over the years and I'm sure it wont be the last.

+davidjellis Thanks David. Other Great rides at the Pleasure Beach During the 60s were The Vampire Jets with it's unusual hydraulic lift that tilted the ride & The Calypso, also with the hydraulic tilting lift. The Sky Wheels and a Helta Skelta with the large wooden bowl to spin the riders at the end of the ride. Nice to see Margate Dreamland open again but still waiting for the centre piece to reopen. The Scenic Railway cars are now on track and being testing for half term / Halloween (Screamland)

It has been at the park for 82 years...first opened in Paris in 1929 but rebuilt at Great Yarmouth in 1932. It has no up-stop wheels...it really is a scenic 'railway' so has a brakeman to control the speed...the brakeman has a special seat towards the front of the train.

@davidjellis
@davidjellis 8 жыл бұрын
+AllyMsp X This ride is not too rough for filming but you should seek permission to film from the ride operator on your visit or contact the park in advance and ask them. I have filmed on hundreds of roller coasters so am experienced in doing it, but it can be dangerous for those not used to it. Also, never try to film on a mobile phone without permission as they are easily dropped and could endanger others and the safety of the ride. A proper camcorder or a GoPro worn on a chest mount is the safest option but do seek permission. Hope that helps.

+rosie800 “rosie800aj” aj The 2nd drop is the biggest drop - it isn't the highest point of the ride (that would be the top of the lifthill as gravity can't make it climb up further) but the 1st drop is only a small one...the second one drops right inside the structure and is a lot of fun.

Hi David, really cool vid !! Thanks for that awesome ride on this very sturdy coaster !! I have also made a video on the scenic railway in Melbourne and someone left a comment a couple of days ago with a link to your video ... The reason is because at the time my video was published (in 2012), I stated that Melbourne's scenic railway was the only coaster operating with brakeman carriages. I would be interested knowing how long the brakeman carriages have been operating on the Pleasure Beach coaster. Here is a link to my vid if you're interested in having a look ... If you read the intro underneath the vid, I give an explanation, you will understand if you watch the vid. Here is the link ... TAKE A ROLLER COASTER RIDE LIKE NO OTHER ... Scenic Railway Luna Park, Melbourne Australia

Hi there. OK here is a list of the scenic railways with brakemen. 1. Roller Coaster at Great Yarmouth Pleasure Beach, 2. Scenic Railway, Dreamland, Margate (currently being rebuilt after fire damage a few years ago), 3. Rutschebanen at Tivoli Gardens, Denmark, 4. Hullamvasut at Holnemvolt Park, Budapest, 5. Scenic Railway Luna Park Melbourne, 6. Hochschaubahn, Prater Park, Vienna, 7. Vuoristorata at Linnanmaki Park, Helsinki, Finland, 8. Montana Suiza, Monte Igueldo, Spain. There used to be a 9th at Bakken in Denmark, but that no longer has brakemen due to new trains fitted a few years ago. You will find POVs on most of these coasters on my scenic railway playlist kzbin.info/aero/PL3nHvX6T_QZA-oPwMos7xEjE4-Sl76XUV - All of these except number 2 were operating with brakemen in 2012 :-)
@davidjellis
@davidjellis 9 жыл бұрын
The Great Yarmouth scenic has always had brakemen, since it opened in France in 1929 at Great Yarmouth in 1932 - not as old as the Luna Park one but the oldest with brakemen is the one at Tivoli Gardens (1914)

It cannot go too fast as it would literally come off the track (it has no up-stop wheels unlike almost every coaster in the world - which is why these scenic railways have a brakeman on board). Top speed is 45mph. Remember this is a family ride and is 82 years old...I wish I could go so fast when I am 82 LOL

You can't see the brakeman on a front seat POV - he is sitting behind me :-) Check out this POV Roller Coaster - Great Yarmouth Pleasure Beach (POV) - you can see the brakeman towards the front of the train. It's a family coaster, but some of the other scenic railways are a little more steep and fast...you still need the brakeman though to prevent the coaster from coming off the tracks as there are no up-stop wheels, unlike most coasters. Check out the footage from some of the Scandinavian scenic railways on my playlist - they are a little more powerful with airtime!
