I was much the same way! My trouble was the height and low G's of going down the first hill. If you want to enjoy these marvels of engineering, I'd suggest going on a coaster that either turns around on the first hill or is a straight shot instead of arcing in a dive. A shallow angle (45 degrees) is easier than a steep one, too. Once you get on a somewhat large coaster (let's say 125-150 feet) it gets SO much easier to confidently get on the REALLY big ones. (300 feet) The sensations on the huge coasters are similar to medium size, though they take longer and you go faster near the ground.

Quality informative video, to adress a crucial issue that is often misrepresented in some media. As you point out, minor and temporary troubles on coasters are being exaggerated, and I am very satisfied that you take the time to explain how benign most of them are. The amount of work behind the video must be incredible! Writing an accurate and engaging script, finding and editing all the relevant videos to illustrate your comments... must have taken dozens of hours. I found this out for my own videos, but your Safety: Explains sets the standards for what a lone coaster KZbinr can achieve. Truly inspiring! I'll try to add French subtitles when I have the time - with your permission. The topic of the video is so significant, and you adress it properly. I really want to share it with the French audience too, to debunk some myths and misconceptions about coasters.

Thanks Philippe, I am glad you liked the video. It is quite a serious issue, and I am hoping this video makes progress towards fixing it. I always pulled the restraints so far down that my hips would hurt afterwards lol.

Don't forget ride inspections too. I used to work at Galaxyland (home of the Mindbender) and ever since the accident in 1986, the ride undergoes numerous inspections where the ride is shut down for approximately 30 minutes a time during the day and this can happen up to 3-4 times a day. Lots of people assume it's because the Mindbender is unsafe, but with all these inspections that happen, it's actually one of the safest rollercoasters in the world right now.

I absolutely hate the media. 'Overreacting' would not even be close enough to a good word to describe them. Apparently, being evacuated safely from a roller coaster (a well-prepared and very safety-conscious procedure) is enough to make the headlines on the evening news. ITV News is by far the worst. Even today, they are still mentioning 'The Smiler' incident despite the fact it happened ages ago now.

Try saying that to the victims of that day 3 years ago. Those people have had to get used to loss of limbs, which in my opinion is far worse than death. How dare you play lives down. That incident was something that should NEVER have happened. Full stop. It was one incident too many.
@InsaneCoaster6 жыл бұрын
+Kyle A I agree with you, certainly. It was one incident too many, and I feel very empathetic for those affected by the ride crash, both mentally and physically. But on the other hand, remember that, for example, lot's of incidents occur affecting or ending the lives of many unfortunate, innocent people, yet these often go unnoticed by the media. I mean stuff that really affects lot's of people such as starvation and poverty around the world. Yet, a couple of unfortunate crashes at theme parks cause madness, hate and anger at theme parks which are meant to be enjoyable, safe places. I would never in my life forgive the ride manager who caused the incident, but realistically I do not understand why the media treat such incidents so disproportionately. Peace out to those affected ;)

@Nyabot-mh2zi6 жыл бұрын
kimberli paige the king da is rolls back purposely but random at the same time it's VERY rare but still super safe 😁
@bellavitagirl46 жыл бұрын
Verónica Camacho yes, very safe - Kingda ka's full roll back is intentional (it has accelerators but not a chain lift) - it is usually rolling back due to physics issues related to how much weight or not is in the cars (since all passengers weigh differently) so they just brake you at the bottom and relaunch to get you all the way over the top.
@JaidenJimenez865 жыл бұрын
The technology used for these has been around for an extremely long time - Elisha Otis Graves, back in the 19th century, invented a mechanism which brakes an elevator car if the rope/chain is cut. It is very simple and proven - and although it is entirely possible to use the same system Otis developed - the chain lift anti-rollback coasters employ today remains, partly because the operators want to keep the clicking sound.
@dudhhrmcdudhhr60715 жыл бұрын
bellavitagirl4 Rollbacks are unintentional but common.
@movax20h5 жыл бұрын
I don't want you to scare, but there were few accidents where lifting mechanism failed and the anti roll back feature failed too (due to unintentionally using an improper replacements, and lack of extensive testing), and the coaster did fall back and slammed the wall. Extreme rare situation tho (once in a decade maybe), and we did learn from them to improve procedures and maintenance.

Dude most parks don’t mess around with safety in the slightest. They have safety inspections on every ride in the morning, including test rides and having to lock and unlock every single restraint on every ride to make sure they work correctly, and at the park I worked at they required us to shut down the ride for a wide variety of scenarios. Smell something unusual that somehow seems to be coming from the ride? Downtime. Something not sounding right? Downtime. Someone unbuckled their seatbelt while they were on the lift? Downtime. Saw a random screw on the floor? Call maintenance to make sure it’s not part of the ride, and you guessed it, downtime. Literally for like any reason at all where the ride seemed even a little unsafe, it was downtime. The only exception was for weather, but that was because the rides office monitored it for us and told us when the weather would be deemed unsafe for whatever ride we were working at.

It’s worth noting that it’s not just the ride operators that are to blame for human error as a lot of people like to believe... I mean riders in some instances can be at fault for not adhering to the guidelines of the ride.... classic one do on stand up while the ride is in motion... I know of an incident where someone did exactly that and was killed as a result. Remember that guidelines are there to keep you safe while still giving you a thrill.

At Intamin (where i work) we sometimes add seatbelt on extreme rollercoasters. It only gives guest an extra safe feeling, but it isnt really functional. as you explained about the chain anti-rollback system, we use something comparible in our restraints. So if the restraint fails, it cant open. In the staition there is a special pin in the track that opens the restraints.

the belt has only 1 function and that is the belt acts as a tester restraint for the main restraint of the ride, the belts are designed so that If you can put the belt in the buckle and it clicks then the main restraint will be fit effectively so if guests cannot put the belt in the buckle then they are too large for the main restraint to be effective and so they cannot ride. The belt is also a quick and reliable way ride attendants can know if they need to ask the quest to come off

Can you stop making a group out of people who are scared of something. Sure, it’s very rare that something will happen, but you can’t get pissed at people because they think it will. If they’re going on the ride, then that’ll show them it isn’t bad. If they don’t, let them leave and don’t complain in KZbin comments.

Also, thank you for your sensitivity in describing unwell guests. I am a recovering emetophobic (someone who has an irrational fear of myself or others vomiting) and was very happy with the way that you communicated things in a calm and non-specific way. When talking about people feeling unwell on rides, I'm used to the media's gross and graphic representation of it (That one spy kids movie, AFV, Roller Coaster Tycoon, viral videos, etc). This was a very professional and refreshing perspective. Wasn't subscribed, but will be now!

A few years ago The Smiler at Alton Towers had a scary accident. An empty train got stuck on the tracks, tripping a sensor and forcing the ride to be stopped. The operator thought it was just a glitch, so he overrode the system...and sent a loaded car careening into the empty train, injuring many riders, two of which had to get their legs amputated!

I interned at Six Flags and shadowed a Ride Operations manager. He took me behind the scenes and showed me all the sensors and control panels associated with these rides. Trust me, they are bristling with said sensors. If there is anything remotely wrong with the ride, it will not go. Imagine trying to pass a 200 step checklist before each go, if one is missing, it's a no go. Fatalities only happen when a person who rides doesn't meet requirements (too heavy, short, tall, etc) or if a person enters an area below the ride that is restricted. It's controlled fear.

And if you notice, most time when a ride operator pulls the seat bar down for an empty seat, they don’t put the seatbelt on. Seatbelts are half extra measures and half for us to feel more safe
@JohnVanderbeck3 жыл бұрын
True but to be fair the only reason they even pull the bar down on an empty seat is the coaster can't dispatch unless that sensor is happy. The seatbelt has no sensor so they don't care about it.

Whenever i click on a Coaster Bot video i am assured of the quality that i am going to experience. The information about rollercoasters is truly remarkable and i am grateful. But as you all know, the roughest and most terrible rollercoaster has left me scarred for life because of how unsafe it was. That's right. I am of course talking about Kumba at Busch Gardens Tampa. It is so extremely rough and has terrible, terrible transitions. The loop on it is so rough that it has paralysed me nose down. Infact, i am writing this using the power of my eyes using a new piece of technology. The term new technology cannot be said about Kumba as it is a disgrace that Bolliger & Mabillard should be regretting. I cannot wait for the day they finally RMC this ride.

I do love Alton Towers, they are SO big on safety, considering what happened a few years ago. I went the other day and unfortunately I wasn't able to go on Nemesis (I've been on it before so it's fine I guess) because it was closed all day. I saw they were sending round the cars with no people on it and it was probably the smallest maintenance issue or something but they take no chances whatsoever. I was upset I couldn't go on it but it made me feel at ease that they really prioritise safety :)
@ToomanyFrancis3 жыл бұрын
Remember, when a ride is closed it means everything is working properly. Rides rarely close because the ride is "broken", they close because one of their safety system sensors went off informing the ride operators to halt operations until the ride is inspected. Generally it is something that won't take long, then they can run a few tests with empty cars or water dummies, and the ride will be back up. When you get to a park at rope drop and all of your favorite rides aren't open you should be thankful that the park you are going to tests their rides diligently before letting guests ride them.

how do coasters stay on the track though? especially the ones that go around in loops. and what if they were to get stuck upside down or on a steep banking turn? would the train fall off the tracks?
@SingleRiderReak6 жыл бұрын
All of that would be explained in "Roller Coaster Trains: Explained" (if he ever makes one). But to give you the answer right away, roller coasters are built on 3 types of wheels; running wheels (on the top), up-stop wheels (on the bottom), and side-friction wheels (on the side). Running wheels are the most commonly known wheels and are the primary wheels to keep the coaster on the track. Up-stop wheels are there for the moments on the coaster where the car would rise off the track (and it doesn't because of them). Side-friction wheels are there for when the coaster car is forced sideways (or in other words, use lateral forces).
@simplydusty3306 жыл бұрын
thanks man appreciate it !
@sierrawest_6 жыл бұрын
SimplyDusty also can’t really get stuck upside down, gravity and the speed of the ride before the loop is gonna pull you one way or the other
@MSRX926 жыл бұрын
Roller coasters can and do get stuck upside in loops--look up 1998 Demon Great America Gurney incident for 1 example. Loop-roller coasters are built so that a coaster can not just fall off the tracks, so even if the coaster stops for whatever reason at the top of a loop, while unpleasant, the cart will safely stay connected to the tracks, rather than falling off to disaster.
