Noisy door, Motor binding, Not Moving, In this video I show how to strip down the door and replace the motor.
How to overcome some fitment issue, from the old motor to the new one.
how to set up the stop functions, for the open and close limits.
Doing it myself I have saved a fortune, some garage repair retailers had said I would need to replace the whole door as it was obsolete, being 10 years old.
The new motors are available on eBay, Amazon for around £120, this was the Ellard 100nm model, there are also cheaper less powerful units available.

Anton, great video. Did my partners roller door yesterday and today. she’s been doing it manually for over a year. It’s so satisfying once it’s done. Watched it go up and down at least 20 times afterwards. I also used an ellard motor going from 30nm to 80nm. Rang them yesterday and the motor arrived this morning. Excellent service. Thanks for sharing. I’m going to add a remote control now so I can open from outside.

Thank you for posting this. I was quoted over £600 by two separate companies to change the motor in my garage door. After following your film I managed to source a new motor (twice as powerful) for £98. I then did exactly as you explain and hey presto I have a full working door again but much quicker. If I lived local to you I would buy you a pint. Thank you.

This is a really useful and thorough work through of replacing a garage door motor which inspired me to replace my own failed motor. I did fit an Ellard motor and would say the instructions are very limited so study the video carefully. Two tips to suggest , 1) take measurements of the old motor drive and limit collars and send them with photos to Ellard sales to make sure you get the right collars ( it took me three attempts on my old door ) 2) the two arrows on the limit adjuster indicate the direction of rotation not Up and down , my motor was on the right side and it took a while to work out which limit I was adjusting . Brilliant video , thank you !

Absolutely superb and exactly what I needed to mentally prepare myself for mine! After being told that the guy that installed it would gladly charge me £650+VAT to fit a new motor, I decided to see what the internet said. First was your video to dismantle it, then a video that says that given the symptoms of my door that it was likely something called a "run capacitor". Zero clue what one of them did but as it was the £6.99 inlcuding shipping option I thought I would do that. What was really irritating was that there was no way of ascertaining the capacitor I needed for my motor as the only way to find this out is to dismantle it. No worries after looking at this. Anyway, I'd finally put it off for long enough and tackled it last week. I made a couple of mistakes with mine, plus here are some other things that might help others: 1) When you untighten the grub screw and remove the circlip at the bearing end and have enough clearance to remove the roller, just nip the grub screw back up to stop the flipping arm sliding all the way back into the mech! 40 mins later I had finally managed to get it back out! :) 2) Mine was the Somfy LT50 and I dug out their instructions which I didn't think were brilliant but it could also have been me. Anyway, I had seen the two adjusters (a white button and a yellow button) and at some stage I must have pushed one of them back in as I was faffing around as the upper limit had lost all sense of being and the thing went way beyond where it should have been and the curtain was flapping around until I dashed to the rescue! So be careful to not touch them! 3) Despite marking everything up like an ordnance survey map I managed somehow not to get one thing lined up and I think it was because I had the devil's own job with the bearing mechanism opposite end to the motor end and two things: my bearing mech was riveted in place so drilled them off no problem but when I removed the motor it got stuck and when I pulled the motor out I could see the male gears (or whatever they are called) and that bit on the end of the motor was wayyyy down the curtain tube. Finally got it out and I suspect that this is what may have caused things to be slightly out of kilter. The good thing is I thought I would be able to adjust it by just resetting the upper and lower limits from scratch so wasn't worried as there really is only one way that it will go back in due to an internal seam, and for the motor on the end too that has a spine so not worried at all. The other thing is that bashing the mech back on the end was not so easy as there was a really thin plastic collar that was basically broken. Perhaps I did it, who knows. But after careful analysis (!) I cut it off and got the mech back together. 4) As I was in this not knowing if up was up and down was up too, I decided to push both the buttons in as I got the feeling this would be the equivalent of a factory reset and it was. Once you had worked out which colour is the up limit, and which is the down, it really is an easy push adjustment to set it as you like. Phew. I have to admit I was worried at this bit. 5) The capacitor size for mine was 7 microfarads and everbody's favourite auction site is full of them. I had to file down the terminals as the Somfy female terminals are 3mm but no issues there at all. My door symptoms were: on first opening slow to rise, then on second and beyond it got even slower and stopped about 2 foot off the floor but would rise given a little lift and any subsequent opening and closing it just got slower and slower. The net result is that the door opens and rises just like it did when it was first installed. Again, I could not have done it without this video so many thanks for taking the time to do this.

Fair play to the chap having a go in this video however being in the trade I think I should probably offer a bit of education to those of you who may have been misguided. When removing the box cover/canopy don't rely on the top hinge part of the lid to support it as in this video - its rare that they actually stay in place when the rivets/screws have been removed, it will more than likely fall off - its only light but the ends can be sharp and you'll probably lose a bit of confidence when it just falls off. The original 'somfy' motor was not 'under-powered' or of a lesser quality - in fact they're renowned for being the best in the market. When properly designing a roller garage door you have to make sure the motor can lift the door weight but you must also ensure that it does not present a 'drawing in' hazard. A correctly selected motor running in an ANSA control panel will stall if someone or something is trapped in the door when opening as it can monitor the motor - by selecting the 100nm motor this door will quite easily lift up and entangle your child or your pet into the roller mechanism given the correct circumstances. Before anyone says "as if that can happen", be sure to google person trapped in roller shutter and you will find a great many instances - hence why the regulations regarding drawing in were created. Of course, joe public are not to know this but the company who supplied you the motor should, which given what they've actually supplied, they don't seem to know either! Warranty of this motor will be interesting as having used various motor companies over the last 20 years their guarantee is always with their supplier, not the end user. So if the company on Amazon decide to close that shop and open "roller shutter motors mk2" then I don't think the motor manufacturer will be obliged to replace your motor if it goes faulty within your perceived warranty period. This is how its always been in this industry and as much as I don't agree with it, I think its legally correct - I think it comes under the fact that once their product (the motor) has been consumed into the finished goods (the garage door) then the warranty lies with the finished goods provider - again not 100 percent on this and would be interested in some plausible debate other than "they have to, its like a washing machine". There are also quite a few different designs of roller garage doors and two I know if in particular have a spring either attached to the roller barrel or within the roller barrel - if you were to undo the bolts holding the motor to the end plate without releasing this tension first you can cause yourself a serious injury. Also, more dangerously you may be able to remove the roller barrel with the spring under tension as it could be being held in place by a bad fitting within the tube, but sure as sh1t it will go with the slightest tap or knock of the roller when you put it down or knock it against something when manoeuvring it about so watch out for that as that will take an eye out. Other than that I think its pretty clear to see that this isn't a particularly difficult job to do and you can bumble your way through it on an installation like that in the video. I would say that a typical garage door team of 2 engineers would have the whole thing completed within an hour start to finish, e.g. arrival, tools out, work done, service, paperwork, tools in. But also bear in mind that the cost of such a job to a business isn't just the part and two lads on £9 per hour - they offer a service, they more than likely employ local people and support your local economy. They also have to make sure that they are still there if the motor goes wrong under warranty. You may have come across this video because you believe the firm(s) you have had out are trying to rip you off, and, unfortunately I've heard of some firms charging over £600 for new motors on jobs like that in the video, which is extortion to most right minded people - but I'd also say check what's in the quote because they may be quoting to upgrade the whole roller to an improved version. Or one with a safety brake bearing. Maybe the problem with some garage door firms is poor communication about what's included. I will finally add that the problem with the motor was probably just a capacitor that could not cope anymore when the door is at its final third of closing because this is when the motor draws the most power because that's when most of the door weight is suspended on the roller. What a long reply this turned out to be - if you got this far well done, 5 stars ***** Top marks to the chap for making the video too, although if I'm being honest I didn't watch it all the way through I just skipped through to the important bits.

Far from being misguided, he did an excellent job and replaced the safety circlip so I, as a retired Chartered Engineer, am very impressed. I think people watching this are generally fed up with trade people ripping them off. If the trade prices were more reasonable, there wouldn't be such a huge audience for videos like this.

@@PaulWingfield I've lost count of how many "engineers" I've done work over the last 23 years doing these doors. You "engineers" say it as if you somehow know what your talking about with roller shutters and garage and such but the fact is you clearly don't or I wouldn't be there having to make you feel better for getting a "man" in. It's also extremely misguided of you to use the blanket term tradespeople or person in the way have assuming we're all here to rip people off and not simply make a living.

Great video. Have just repaired my garage door today. Needed a new start capacitor, so ended up being a £5 repair rather than a new motor! Bargain. One thing to watch is that mine had a rivet through the hexagon tube and into the drive end of the motor. Luckily after a just a few taps with the mallet I realised and drilled it out! Door is now working a treat every time.

Fantastic job. 👏 I love the way you improvised with the mounts and overcame the smaller screws. My doors are similar but have a really weird problem. Very often, they stop at a two certain points in the travel when rising (same places every time). The motor appears to try to continue and sounds like it's going to burn out, but when I help by applying just a little upward lift by hand at the bottom, it continues to the top. It doesn't do it every time and I've checked for obstructions (there are none in the runners) so I'm baffled. I might try changing the motor as it's old but not noisy.😀

Very informative video, our garage door motor was making weird noises and when we removed the top cover we found a snail inside had somehow managed to get trapped and squashed between the left side motor and door slats causing a misalignment of slats. Having cleaned out all the snails shell debris the door now opens closes ok but does occasionally make some grinding noises on the left side so I foresee going down your road and maybe replacing the motor before the winter takes hold.

I'd recommend re fitting the hood cover back on using 'pk' screws or tek self drilling screws, much easier for the removal next time. Also when removing the curtain attachment straps beforehand, I'd recommend blocking up the door slightly with timber or something so that when re connecting it's easier to re fit the curtain attachment straps as you won't have to pull the curtain up by hand to re align/attach etc

Ellard are a decent brand for motors especially on the bigger industrial type doors & also gates. Before re connecting the curtain attachment straps to the barrel with the new motor wired in etc run it down to its full bottom limit so It doesn't go down no more, then attach the curtain straps the barrel. Then take door up & slowly decrease the top limit - until the door stops to your required position.

My garage door has just failed in that from a Closed position it tends to 'oscillate' or make repeated attempts to open by about 6'' before 'dropping' to its Closed position. Limit adjustment on these motors are fairly simple: look at the arrow directions & vision what way the curtain rolls up/down, then to make the door roll up higher tweak the + symbol either clockwise or anti clockwise or too lower the limit tweak the - symbol too your desired position. Always handy to mark up inside of hood canopy box what limit is up/down with a marker pen for future reference I find it easier to hold the directional button & make the adjustments at the same time but obviously tweak the desired limit direction very slowly so you don't over do it

Our garage door was installed 15 years ago, working fine until a couple months ago when it would open about 1/3 of the way and then need a helping hand to fully open, now it lifts a few of the slats but won't raise the door off the floor at all. It's never had a problem going down. Would people recommend replacing with a new motor due to it's age, or just attempt a capacitor repair? Thanks in advance!

When I dismantled, the SOMFY motor was only 25 Nm, so I followed your example and upgraded (to 50Nm, made by Ellard, via Amazon). This solved all the sticking and now the door works perfectly again.

I think you can see the rivet in your video at 17:32 in the black end cap. The rotating collar on the motor end is the position sensor for end stops. Most motor stall faults are the start capacitor in the motor that you can change for about £5. I pulled the motor apart but couldn't get the housing out with the capacitor in so ended up replacing mine is also a somfy 55nm but its a double garage so it would be pretty powerful for a single garage. When you press the button, it clicks...the motor activate but the door never goes up. I can open and close the door using the grinder. I can close the door using the remote, it clicks once and closed without any issues or weird noises. When it reaches the bottom it seems that it wants to fully close but then tries to reopen which then obviously fail. Is this also a motor issue ?

My garage roller door is about 12 years old and has been opened and closed less than 100 times max in 12 years as we don’t use it as a garage. It is not going up or down using the control panel or remote. It will open and close using the manual winder. As it has had effectively no usage I am wondering what the most likely problem is. There is power to the controller and LED light is permanently red ( not sure if this is normal). When I press the open button there is noise on the motor for about 1 second but then nothing. I am wondering if the motor has failed simply to lack of use. Is there anything I can check to work out if my motor can be fixed or if a new motor needed? Would lack of use cause a motor failure?

Great video although a little low on sound..Ive watched a few times now and feel confident to change the motor myself. My Novoroll door is only 3 years old and the door goes up and down sometimes . It then sticks both up and down and makes some odd grating noises. How do I know if its the motor or the capacitor..many thanks

@@aaanton11 No, thank you so much for your prompt response! I don't suppose you can shed any light on these controller units too, because our light failed and then the red button ceased to work while the remote was OK. Your video was not only helpful but amusing too - just the right balance of no-nonsense, down to earth help which has inspired me to tackle my own motor! Well done!

If the garage door goes down normally without excessive motor noise but fails to go up its more than likely the run capacitor inside the motor which is the white plastic cylinder attached to 2 wires and if you can workout how to disassemble the motor the capacitor is easy to swap for a new one(Just be aware they carry a charge even when unplugged, but shorting it with a rubber handled screwdriver will instantly discharge). Mine cost £6.99 and the garage door works like new!

The motors are slid inside the barrel tube & the end of the motor collar is rivited into position, sometimes the rivets fail & break off which then you see the problem of the motor is turning within the barrel tube which you can hear but the barrel is not lifting the curtain. Where the roller wheel is at the other end, there's metal tabs that have been tapped down to prevent it from jumping out the cup end. If removing in future don't forget to Bend up first of all, then when re fitting make sure you tap the tabs back down. Or alternatively as you have done in the video undo the grub screws on the shaft collar, there may be a circlip or a hose 'jubilee' clip to undo

My roller door is very, very similar to this one and goes down smoothly with no noise from the motor but only goes up with some assistance so I was thinking it might be the capacitor no longer giving it the initial boost needed and therefore stalling. Does it click when you press the button to open the door, if so you need to put a volt meter across the motor output pins on the control panel, the other issue it might be is the upper limit switch, which is on the motor. Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
