When you are unable to determine why you, or oppo, have an unexpected score, wouldn’t it help to look at ALL the scores?

Hi, Graeme, nothing to do with these hands. Recently at Lincoln played against Brian Papps, he was a master (don’t know if they lose their title or not). I was in 4 spades and there were 4 out. Anyway he was on lead and played 9 spades, I ducked on table and his partner played Q, I can’t have had a higher card in my hand cos I lost. Slightly forgetting because he managed to make 2 spade tricks getting his K . Contract 2 light. It annoyed me that I didn’t finesse correctly, why would he lead 9 spades, that confused me. Apart from knowing who I was up against. If this question doesn’t make sense forget it. Thanks anyway.

Hi Heather, hard to know for sure without seeing the hand. But deception is a big and legitimate part of the game. Sometimes players do misleading things to give the opposition a difficult decision. It’s normal even though it can feel bad when someone successfully leads you astray. Brian is a good player, it wouldn’t surprise me if he’d pulled off some sort of tricky play like that.
