Got to laugh at this, back in the 1970s I remember the Dr Pepper ads were so lame I never wanted to taste it. There was even an Urban Legend that Dr Pepper was Carbonated Prune Juice. Wasn't until the 2010s sometime when fast food chains had those serve yourself drink dispensers, and I actually tried a sip. and thought it was way better than Coke and Pepsi. Amazing how a total crap ad campaign can ruin sales.

I just checked out the list. No surprise on how they made it their politically correct , “want list” steeped in woke ideology rather than an actual objective list. I know judging guitarists is subjective but when you have Joe Perry at 135 and Joni Mitchell cracking your top 25, that’s not objective….that’s propaganda. But does this shock anyone? This isn’t a music magazine; it’s a political one, therefore picking top 🎸 becomes yet another opportunity for the clueless social justice warriors of Gen Z that now write this baseless crap to sneak guitarists in that don’t belong their because they share the same genitals and politics rather than being a guitar hero. At the beginning of the list RS states that the list they complied on 2011 were essentially picked by guitarists and leaned classic rock. But now, this “new and approved” list is chosen by writers of RS…in other words, social justice college grads. I knew what that meant. Every other guitarist was female…not that there is anything wrong with females making the list…but are they serious? I didn’t know this many females even played guitar. It’s freaking ridiculous. If RS ever wants to be considered viable by people that actually appreciate music they need to cease their political agenda as it’s obviously seeing into even their guitar lists. What a joke!

Not to mention they also didn't acknowledge any of the quiet yet iconic guitar players such as the Wrecking Crew & the Funk Brothers. Who whether or not you know their names, the guitar work they did on albums as studio guitarists speaks volumes for sure. I mean c'mon no mention of, "Tommy Tedesco, Glenn Campbell, Billy Strange, Barney Kessel, Joe Messina, Robert White, or Eddie Willis. Say what you want, but if it wasn't for those guys right there alone, much less any of the other great studio session players we wouldn't have heard even half of the iconic R&B, Soul, Pop, Rock, & Funk, etc... songs there is today! Just bcuz they were on the DL & not seen on the forefront doesn't make them any less of a guitarist than all the others who were on center stage, IMO anyways. Don't quote me on this but between those 7 guitar players I mentioned, I'd say they've got to be responsible for playing on around at least "7,000" albums. 🤔 Many of which created vibe & riffs on songs themselves, for the artist. Just saying.. 🤘😉🤘 +Peace, Rock n' Roll 4 Your Soul My Friend+

@@yvettelearnshowtoshredI don't know about that. Some of these picks are really good. The problem with such a vague list genre bias and huge generational bias. It also depends how much you think influence matters or doesn't matter. Not setting any clear criteria makes a list on the subject ultimately meaningless. Slap names of guitar players people know. Let’s be honest here, folks. RS did this 100% on purpose. Obviously a ranking list like this featuring the “greatest” of anything will have haters no matter what, but they absolutely made it as absurd as they could specifically to get more people talking about it. They knew a whack list like this would get way more of a reaction from people than a “safe” list would. Turns out they were absolutely correct lol. I doubt we’d see anywhere near as many reaction videos or people talking about the list if they had just gone with the obvious, safe choices. I don’t agree with the list either, but let’s not act like it is anything more than a tabloid-level rage bait article. It’s just a garbage junk food magazine at this point, nothing more.
@nickvickers3486
@nickvickers3486 10 ай бұрын
They'd get hate and reaction with a 'safe' list as well! Take any two talented guitarists of different genres and how do you say who's better. E.g. Marc Knopfler v Marty Friedman? Or BB King v Graham Coxon? It's not easy, like comparing football players of different generations. You're not comparing like for like and it's difficult to know what criteria to use...
@STSGuitar16
@STSGuitar16 10 ай бұрын
@@nickvickers3486 yeah m8, I just said they’d get hate even with a safe list 😂😂 but yeah, I think you’re right for the most part. There could possibly be a solution to that by creating some sort of completely objective variable to apply to every guitarist to help decide between two obviously great players. I’m not sure what that objective variable could be, though. Maybe some sort of average score of a few different categories based on things like number of albums sold, number of live shows played, number of charting songs, things like that? Maybe if the two players in question are more or less equal in terms of guitar playing ability, the auxiliary objective score could come in to decide between the two. Of course, then it wouldn’t be a solely guitar playing-based evaluation (which, it’s basically that way now anyway), but it could make for a fun list either way. But yeah, ranking lists like this will always have detractors.

Dude, the Judas Priest thing isn't even that egregious compared to some of the other things wrong with that list. Kerry King being 105 spots higher than Eric Johnson and 97 ahead of Nuno Bettencourt is sheer lunacy. Not to mention Annie Clarke being ranked at 26 above David Gilmour, Brian May, Wes Montgomery, Mark Knopfler, Larry Carlton, ect. is absurd. Add to all of that no inclusion of Al Di Meola, Guthrie Govan, Paul Gilbert, Paco De Lucia, Alex Lifeson, Jim Hall, or Joe Pass makes this list a colossal failure.

Got to agree on Slayer of the Big 4 they are #3 in album sales. When Raining Blood came of a big Metalhead I was friends with got it and he hated the whole thing and gave it to me saying here this is more your style. I listen to it though Angel of Death was fairly interesting, but the rest was exactly the same. As far as I'm concerned,Slayer only has 2 songs, South of Heaven, which I like and everything else which sounds exactly the same, and is mostly crap. No way on the list of top 50,000 guitarists. I've seen 8 yr old kids on KZbin that are better. And tell me how King from Slayer is better than Al DiMeola, Roy Clark, Gary Moore, Paco DeLucia, Alan Holdsworth, Yngwie Malmsteen. And tell Mr also how Is Joan Jett above Lita Ford. Or how is Paul McCartney a bass and piano player, who barely plays guitar so high on a list. And how is the guy from the White Stripes on this list when far better players are not. If these are the best then why so many mediocre Blues Players on this list and so many top Jazz guys are not...Every song is a one four five with zero variety... on the list but Technically proficient player with massive discographies of musically complex songs are not.

Incredibly funny to see everyone complaining about the list when it's just a list about one's personal taste. I will always hold Ritchie Blackmore higher than both Jimmy Page and Tony Iommi. There are many who quite rightly complain that Yngwie Malmsteen is not on the list, but I have only seen a couple of comments that point out that Alexi Laiho is not on this list as he should be. For me, there is probably no female guitarist who beats Tina S, and you can only go on her cover on Ludwig van Beethoven - Moonlight Sonata (3rd Movement).

IMO Kerry King is overrated, even for making great riffs. Look at all of Slayer's most popular songs. They are written by Hanneman. If you want to talk about outrageous omissions, Yngwie wasn't on the list and neither was Holdsworth.

A lot of people complain about the lumping together. Lead and Rythm are 2 distinct and not comparable. Also I hate the fact lists like this are America centric. I have not seen the whole list but the last time the top 100, nearly everyone on it was American or British. There's a hundred and eighty other countries with massively talented players who are way better than 99% of the American players. Yet they don't get on these lists. I could give you ten bands whose playing will blow you away. But they'd never get on these types of lists.

“Lead & rhythm are 2 distinct & not comparable “….not to people who actually PLAY guitar. There is no such thing as a “lead guitar” or a “rhythm guitar “ it’s just a guitar, when you learn to play it, you play both

@gerardcote8391 11 ай бұрын
@@williamandrews3648 I am referring to bands that have exclusively one lead and one rythm guitarist. Most Metal band have either one who plays both or 2 lead who also play both. But a lot of rock bands with 2 have one exclusively playing each.

@@bjr4567 Again you start with the default Ameri-centric view. And probably never listened to any other music from other countries. In 1990 US Music turned into total crap, so I started listening to music from other countries. And I found way better music. Case in point Paco DeLucia, Yngwie Malmsteen, Herman LI, Midori and Miyako, Teru and Hizaki, Eddie Iron Bunny.

It's irrelevant who Rolling Stone put on their list (irrelevant just the same as it is with the Grammys, which are a joke) There's dozens of people on this list who shouldn't be anywhere near it as there are dozens who are not on it who should be in the top 100;- Benson, Malmsteen, Govan, Holdsworth & dozens more. Yeah & Gary Moore isn't on and he is some peoples favourite. They're just being inclusive for the sake of it and they're wrong! They could say the most influential or innovative but they'd still be wrong so wrong certainly 'Not' the Greatest

I mean, I agree Dave Mustaine should be on the list. But omitting Marty Friedman is the much greater offense. Dave is a fine player and deserves a lot of credit for his riff writing, legacy, influence, etc. But Marty is a prodigy of a player. I would bet money he's inspired and influenced more guitarists in the last 30 years than just about anyone in the whole 250.

The Rolling Stone mag fell off the cliff after releasing this list. They have zero credibility. The top 10 is a politically correct statement. Got to have 1/2 black and white guys. Jeff Beck was by all accounts one of the best ever. He’s not even in the top 10. Hendrix #1 (yawn and cliche). EVH at #70 (sad, he was innovative, fast, melodic, and clean - one the greats). Joni Mitchell #72 (a songwriter extraordinaire but not a good guitarist). Same with Neil Young (in fact he has poor technique). The Edge #24 (he’s only adequate - nobody knowledgeable would rate him this high). OMG are the judges eating out of lead plates. Mark Knopfler #27 (masterful guitarist) Steven Stills #28 (not great). Almost every entry and the corresponding ranking shows poor judgment and a complete lack of journalistic integrity.

It’s a diversity list compiled by kids that got their jobs at RS the same way they made this shit ass wokester list….diversity. Before the list was even considered they did this: okay, find x many minority players, x many females, and prioritize the most publicly woke guitarists and exclude (how ironic) anyone that disagrees with us politically. I.e. Ted Nugent, Eric Clapton, etc. Not a viable, objective list by any means…because it’s not written by real journalists that give a shit about music. Music/art is just another vehicle/excuse to spread their woke propaganda.

Ted Nugent was always in the top of the 'best guitarist' list during the 70s, right behind or ahead of Eddie Van Halen and Tom Sholtz. RS has always been a joke. Joan Jett? The Ramones? U2 (sorry, playing 1 note on 1 string for an entire song is not 'great'). RS won't admit this list is about 'diversity' but it's very obvious.
