And fuck having a "unique voice" this is about the best singers. People like bob dylan, lou reed or mick jagger shouldnt be on the list, theirnnot known for singing well. Thi shouldnt be the most popular singer list, this should be the list of the best popular singers. The list shouldnhave been done by genre, any person wich is the standard of a music genre deserves a top 10 Pop: MJ, WHITNEY RNB: Aretha Jazz:Ella Fitzgerald Soul:james brown Rock:freddy mercury Metal:ronnie james dio Opera:luciano pavaroti, maria callas Musical theater: barbara streisand Edith Piaf, Amália Rodrigues, Elis Regina,Camaron de la isla. All of these people are considered the voice of their respective genres and everybody that comes after them has to mesure themselves against them, then we can start to discuss the rest of the list

@@goncalodias6402 It’s not about hitting a million notes per syllable, it’s about tone, distinction and originality. Lou Reed, Mick Jagger and Bob Dylan should definitely be on there. All you need to do is listen to her and Duke Ellingtons 7 minute rendition of It Don’t Mean A Thing and that’s all you’ll ever need to hear to understand why she should always be higher than Frank Sinatra on any list that involves singing. Frank has the reputation he has because of the time he made music and because of his race and gender. Celine Dion is among the Vocal Trinity, alongside Whitney and Mariah. She may be polarising in terms of her artistic choices, but as a singer, she is no doubt a tour de force. She, together with Whitney and Mariah, powered the diva industry in the 90s that basically gave birth to Christina Aguilera, Beyonce, Adele, Gaga and Ariana. She didnt sing her ass off in All By Myself and It's All Coming Back to Me Now to be disrespected this way.

Madonna had waaay chops for sure. A legend if pop. Her vocals were literally not great from an objective standpoint if I just think of her key songs. I guess she is way more talented at pop than Lady Gaga, because if Lady Gaga lacked that 3+ octave voice she has, her music would be damps as wet chips. Did Amy Lee of Evanescence even make the 200? She brought it. Who else showed women they could make a great pop record without a lilting, meandering vocal style but her? She literally screams and her songs are cream. Mike Akerfeld too. Lists like these generally ignore any metal subgenres outside classic 70s metal and maybe NWOBHM which is a shame because there's some incredible vocal work in the extreme subgenres. Even if they'd just included one or two as a nod to those styles I'd have been okay with it.

@@craigcharlesworth1538 yeah that's true. But lists like this are inherently impossible to manage, Sissel Kyrkjebø is one of the greatest Norwegian singers of all time, but it feels unreasonable to expect the authors to know who she is, even though her vocal ability is much better than many of the people listed, but if you haven't lived in Scandinavia then you've probably never heard of her. I feel like this problem will always exist, but that it's better to make lists in narrower categories. Like most important singers for rock and roll history, or just singer-songwriters.

BUT, it's Rolling Stone's list, so they put people where they think they should go. However, Aretha at #1 is unquestionable, although many might think Whitney was a better singer. She was not, but I understand why non-singers would think that. (And I doubt Whitney would argue with that, either.) And to not have Sarah Vaughn, Dionne Warwick on this list makes it entirely questionable. As Rolling Stone said, it's not the "greatest VOICES list" it's the greatest singers. I suggest that their panel is too young to have lived thru the 40s, 50s and 60s.

Chet Baker is easily as well-known for his singing, as his trumpet playing. And I’d also say that he’s a fantastic and unique vocalist!

Janet Jackson will always be one of my favourite pop singers. Up until the early 2000's (superbowl) she put out incredible pop songs. She can dance, sing and she is criminally underrated.
