Actually no. They aren’t done by a committee. They take however many ppl, all walks of life, and each of them list their top 1 or 5 or whatever it is. Then they tally those votes. That’s how artists that you wouldn’t think of as top singers like Fela Kuti get on here.

More importantly, I don't think the replicability of Sinatra's voice is a point in his favor. Sure, his voice was pretty, and he had skill to back it up, but that doesn't make him better than her. Quite the opposite, Ella is iconic BECAUSE few can do what she did.

Eddie himself was pretty great and one of my fav singers ever. I blame the knock-offs for ruining that vocal style and turning it into a parody of itself. With Eddie it sounded very natural (prolly because the anatomy -- of his cheekbone, jawline, nose, throat, mask and tongue was super suited for it) and powerful because it had heart. Plus it fit the music and lyrics so well. But with Scott Stapp, Bush, Shaun Morgan, Chad Kroeger, f*ck me you know the rest. And we all know the story. It just became this stupid, marble-mouthed, straining-on-the-toilet singing thing that is really one of the worst trends that ever happened in popular music.

He was an all around entertainer but like Diana Ross he had a nice tone and good phrasing but was not a phenomenal singer. And frankly, it’s Elton who should be higher. In his peak in the 70s and 80s he could sing hard rock and ballads both convincingly. His falsetto before his voice changed was incredible. For someone like Elton you need to divide his career into 3 periods young Elton, middle aged Elton and old Elton. He can’t sing anymore but he was masterful when young.
