There are certain bands that could have stayed on the DL and they would have done pretty okay and because they were catapulted off like one good song I believe that sometimes a certain part of these band's audiences will think that they're over rated after putting out a follow up album to all that success and it gets shit on because it's not like [Previous Album]

why are people so dead keen on a wide vocal range? i'd rather have a singer with a unique style than some generic wide range one. not saying a wide vocal range is a bad thing, but it's not a necessity for singers imo.
@no_nameyouknow
@no_nameyouknow 4 жыл бұрын
It's not about necessity, people bring up range because it is impressive and can sound really good if done well. When talking about vocalists range is the thing that let's you stand out. Having a high and powerful voice literally makes you stand out, it's easier to hear. I'm not even being silly here. In a crowded bar or at a concert, the singer with the higher range will be heard better than the one that sings low. There is more to it too, a good song has range in the melody, going up or down creates drama, so singers with good range can have more dramatic and emotional songs. Of course it's not needed, I like singers who have small ranges too, it's just I don't think of them as amazing singers, I usually like them because they are great songwriters.

@@richardkovacs2006 Their styles were completely different. For one, MJ collaborated with Quincy Jones who wrote most of his iconic tracks and Quincy Jones, while a genius, had a completely different take on pop, fusing pop R&B with elements of jazz. Prince had a much wider breadth of musical proclivities and borrowed far more from new wave, rock, and funk, as well as jazz. Furthermore, Prince mixed his albums completely differently, allowing different instruments to take center stage, whereas Jones always make Michael's vocals the heart of the track. Same goes for Lou Reed. Who has ever rated him as a strong vocalist? No one. We listen to him for the songs. Also, his style fits his songs. They're not written to be showcase pieces for vocal or instrumental virtuosity.

Nashville skyline. That album shows his incredible vocals. Also his vocal experimentation is next to none. He would try so many different styles and ways of singing yet you always know its him. But I agree Dylan fans, myself included don't generally listen to his albums for the vocals. He's only the greatest songwriter ever.

His vocals are much more than just about 'range'. He's got versatility and limitless expressivity. Singers like Hank Williams, Neil Young, heck even Springsteen etc. They're still great vocalists. It's a matter of what you value as great singing.

Let's Agree: Ringo Starr was a god tier vocalist, making the other puny Beatles shiver in fear of his might. He may have a very limited vocal range but when you hear Ringo sing, you lose control of yourself due to the sensation it provides

Freddie Mercury was so good at singing that actual scientists were arguing over just how good he actually was at it decades after his death, so maybe thinking he's overrated is just a matter of personality.
@TripsX

That literally proves nothing. There are far better voices out there. Listen to Peter Murphy, his songs in Bauhaus AND his solo stuff. Incredible deep voice, godly, like no other. Makes Freddie’s voice look basic in comparison. Then listen to Andrew Eldritch and Siouxsie Sioux.

@@TripsX I don't see what that proves either. I love those singers too but calling Freddie 'basic in comparison' is wild. Not only was he a technical marvel but he was incredibly expressive and undoubtedly the best singer Queen could have possibly had.

Kurt Cobain actually had a pretty open singing voice with a good range. Songs like In Bloom and Teen Spirit present some challenging jumps and breathing challenges. And his baritone was very effective as well. he def pushes his voice and didn’t care about cracking breaking or blowing out, but in terms of vocal freedom and range he actually had some unique skills.
