I met Mick and Keith in a neighborhood tavern when I was a child. I went with my Dad to pick up his instruments from a gig from the night before. He was an accordion player who lead a Polka Band. In walk these two. They conversed with my father for a while, after seeing him with his instruments. They bought me a soda, and patted me on the head, while calling me a fine young lad. My Dad always told everyone that story. R.I.P. Dad ❤️

My father who died 7 years ago told me since i was a child that he was 14 years old and he was in this crowd. He said that this concert were the best moments he ever experienced. My family live in Münster and my dad always was so proud to tell me about this evening. I would give everything to show him this recording.....sadly it´s not possible anymore

That's the cool thing. Brian was a very good slide and rythm guitarist and Keith is - as always - a miserable lead guitarist. Just listen to his bad and simple solo on the studio version of "Sympathy ..." in 68. Here he plays false notes on in the beginning of the Satisfaction riff. But is fun to hear the band as a unit in 65. Charlie really drives them and Brian and Bill are cool!

@@brianjones4026 it was actually mick and keith who organized that handyman to kill brian....when they kicked brian out of the band that he had started brian threatened to sue them over the use of the name "the rolling stones" so they decided to have him removed and yes it was this workman who drowned brian in his own pool...held his head underwater...brian could be very nasty and was not a likeable character but he was a musical genius...when his drug use excellerated and affected his performance mick and keith decided to kick him out and brian was furious about it and may have even threatened them...mick and keith and the others weren't too phased about it because they played hyde park soon after...some wonder how they could have played so soon after brian's death...it's because they had it done

But in the 60s, Richards looks like the most gawky and unnatural stage presence I've ever seen. In my opinion, it was only at the end of the decade, after about 8 years apprenticeship observing Jones and Jagger, that Richards finally came into his own on stage. His increasing drug dabbling also probably 'helped'.

After reading a few of the more recent comments, some historical perspective is helpful here. In the early and mid 60's, there was a pecking order for rock bands and a style for rock shows that does not exist today. In that time, on stage monitors did not exist, and touring gear was rather basic. The Beatles (as a comparison) were the top band of that time, and were playing arena and stadium gigs (Shea) without that gear. They kept in time with Ringo banging the drums for all he was worth, and it worked. Here, Charlie Watts is not banging away like Ringo did. The timekeeper was Brian Jones' guitar, which was cranked up high so the others didn't get ahead or behind in a song. The mics were set up the way they were because of the nature of the show the Stones were playing in that time. They were not the only act, but shared the stage with other 'up and coming' bands on that tour. The way shows were done was it was act after act after act. This is why Ian Stewart is rushing the stage after the last song. They had to get off the stage and make way for the next group. No drum riser here, so the drums had the mics they did out of necessity for efficiency, and no front of house sound either. Rock shows then were very chaotic affairs, as this was still in it's infancy at that time. For a better idea of how this worked, watch the NME award shows (there are several versions) on YT from 64 and 65, which feature both the Stones and Beatles. It wasn't until about the later 60's that shows would evolve to what they are more like today.

The Rolling Stones was the musical vision of Brian Jones. He was a die hard devotee of American Mississippi Delta/Chicago blues. It's good to see him anchoring his band during this performance, before the demons he battled robbed him of the greatness they would achieve, and ultimately his life. I'll never forget July 4,1969! I was 11 years old and my family and my late cousin Julio's family were celebrating American Independence Day at Hansen Dam in Lakeview Terrace, California. We were barbecuing and having a ball swimming. Later on, my cousin Julio, brother Tony and I walked across the street to a Liquor Store to buy Ice Cream and Soda Pops. As we walked in, I went over to a stack of newspapers and was staggered reading the headline which read something like "Rolling Stone Drowns In Pool Tragedy". I shouted out to my brother Tony, "hey Tony, I think Mick Jagger drowned in his pool" as I continued reading I found out it was Brian Jones and that he drowned the day before in his pool on July 3,1969. I was simply stunned. I wasn't aware Brian Jones was dismissed by The Rolling Stones on June 9,1969. Later on my dad dropped us off at White's Record Store in Pacoima, California. We admired Mr. White, an Afro-American, who always had his store stocked with Rolling Stone records. I was surprised to see he was open. It was Friday July 4,1969. As I walked in I asked him if he'd heard of Brian's death and said he had and how sad it was. He then said that The Rolling Stones just released a new Single that very day and I couldn't believe it! The Single was "Honky Tonk Woman/You Can't Always Get What You Want". I guess that's one of the reasons Mr. White opened that day. I immediately bought it and took it home! I quickly noticed Brian wasn't on the cover. The cover depicted The Rolling Stones standing at a bar with new Stone Mick Taylor. I was blown away by Charlie's Drums at the beginning of the song! I sat there in my room listening to that single countless times mourning Brian's passing. I just couldn't believe he no longer graced this Earth. REST IN ETERNAL PEACE ~ LEWIS BRIAN HOPKIN JONES

I'm a massive fan of their music. Like, MASSIVE. Just not of Mick and Keith as people so much, and how they carry themselves. For me their creative reign was over as that amazing sax solo fades out 'Waiting On A Friend' and side 2 of 'Tattoo You' comes to an end. Your point about synchronicity is a great one. So many bands have that and it flames out after only a few years / relentless touring / creative demands. I also think that great writers / painters / film makers / recording artists have a finite number of great works in them, and some realize when that is over and hang up their hats / retire / enjoy life. I’m actually amazed that anybody can hear the drums at all because there are only two microphones positioned in the front above the symbols and that’s it. And none of the guitar amplifiers are miked. No monitors either. Really a strange set up

@@mj.l There were actually monitors available - not that you said there weren't, LOL. On Top Of The Pops, they are clearly there to be seen in a Beatles show in '64. There were decent monitors as a regular feature of USA shows for San Francisco acts, as early as 1966. Like so many things with the (earlier) Beatles, they seemed to get the worst set-ups despite being so deserving of the best.

Check the audience - some are obviously just stunned by Micks’ uncanny, riveting performance during “It’s Alright”. A human spectacle on another level to anything a singer had done before. A legend in the making right there folks.
