I saw them live last year, and they're still rocking even after 60 years. The show was probably the best day of my life! If I had to do a top five I think I'll go with : 1. Let it Bleed 2. Exile on Main St 3. Sticky Fingers 4. Some Girls 5. Beggars Banquet

Well, I preffer to choose the best 5 albums of each phase of the band, the one with Brian Jones, then the one with Mick Taylor, and the last one with Ron Wood. It's because they have their own characteristics on account of their techniques and styles. Also I include live albums because the performance of a song vary when it's played in a studio or alive. Brian phase: - "The Rolling Stones" first album ( It's probably the best first album of a rock band ever) - "12 x 5" ( The inclusion of the rare "5 x 5" EP makes this album a very special one, but it has other great covers as Under the boardwalk and Time is on my side for example) - "Out of our Heads" ( It has Satisfaction, but also has That's how strong my love is, The last time, The spider and the fly......... , a great album.) - "Between the Buttons" ( It's the album I like the most of this phase. Miss Amanda Jones is outstanding.) - "Aftermath" ( I've been told that it's the Stones preffered album by the Beatles! Is it true?) Mick Taylor phase: - " Stick Fingers ( I think this is their greatest album. Period!) - " Exile on Main Street" ( This is the best double album of all rock 'n' roll.) - " Goats Head Soup" ( Critics were very very unfair when this album was released. They used to compare it with the Exile. Well, Exile was a double one. Imagine if GHS was a double one too!!!!) - "Get Yer Ya Yas Out" ( What a great blues solo in Love in vain!) - "Brussels Afair" ( It's a bootleg, but, in fact, it's the Stones greatest live album.) Ron Wood phase: - "Some Girls" , "Tattoo You", "Voodoo Lounge", "A Bigger Bang" and the great "Hackney Diamonds". I think it's all for now, folks!

A solid approach. Just goes to show there’s a LOT of great albums across the Stones’ long career!
@luizoswaldoabreu275210 ай бұрын
I didn't quote "Beggars Banquet", "Let it Bleed" and "Black and Blue", because in spite of being excellent albums, Brian, Mick Taylor and Ron Wood only play guitar in two or three tunes each album. Brian only plays harmonica, I think. Am I wrong?

Thanks for taking the time to do this top 5. However I wish it was your top 10. I always enjoy hearing people's view points. Anyway my top 5 1_Sticky Fingers 2_ Beggars Banquet 3_ Some Girls_ 4 Emotional Rescue (Yes you heard me correctly) and 5_ the beautiful Goat Heads Soup.

No shade on ER. That's a bit of a guilty pleasure album for me. I dig it!
@cassettetapehound Жыл бұрын
YES YES YES!!! Emotional Rescue. THANK YOU! It's blamed for being cast-offs from Some Girls, but It's way way looser than Girls, which is more tightly-wound. Besides that, Dance Pt. 2 is way better than Miss You, and the b-side to the single shattered, Everything's Turning to Gold, would have been a great inclusion on Emotional. Aftermath being on this list is spot-on. But I also think the record-buying public bought way more albums in the '70's than in the '60's, and that's a firm reason why Some Girls always makes everybody's list; it's tuneful and everybody has heard it. But Aftermath stands out way more in the time it was made than Some Girls does.

Their 1989 album Steel Wheels is the MOST underrated album in their career. It's one of their best. *"Mixed Emotions", "Hold On To Your Hat", "Rock And A Hard Place", "Almost Hear You Sigh"* If a person doesn't like this album, then they're not a fan, they just like the popular albums hipster journalists insist you should like b/c of that 1 hit song.
@TrackXTrack Жыл бұрын
I dig that album too
@curly_wyn Жыл бұрын
Wrong. That album is not bad, but EXTREMELY generic and predictable. It’s just barely better than Dirty Work, and the only songs I like from it are Terrifying and Blinded by Love. You thinking it’s awesome is your own opinion, but the fact of the matter is that it doesn’t hold up next to their best work.
@samlewis7878 Жыл бұрын
Nah, I disagree. It was a ,pop album tight and well produced from start to finish. The band shimmered with talent and freshness. Life in the studio can be a sonic haven and a blast.

To add to the debate, I find your omission of Beggar's Banquet somewhat questionable. Also, while I love Wild Horses, their most heartfelt ballad in my view has to be Let it Loose from Exile. Sadly, they've never played it live. And an honourable mention please to It's only Rock and Roll, Mick Taylor's sawn song.

I’m glad to see a top 5 without Beggars Banquet. I love BB but feel it’s held in such high regard for SFTD and SFM which are not my favourite Stones songs. (Sympathy on Get Yer Ya Ya’s Out being an altogether better version.). Tattoo You gets my vote for Fifth despite it being a thrown together slap dash of songs from the seventies to the time of it’s release. 5. Tattoo You 4. Between the Buttons 3. Let it Bleed 2. Sticky Fingers 1. Exile

Nice thoughts on these albums, and respectable ranking. I think a top 10 list better serves the stones because Some Girls belongs in the second 5, and Emotional Rescue NEVER gets its due!!!!! Maybe ranking the WORST 5 is a better indication since there are only a few terrible records, but Dirty Work would be my pick for the worst.

The Beatles catalog is a planet by itself, the Stones catalog is arguably second. Some amazing albums. Can’t believe it has been ages since their last studio album! I also like plenty of 80’s Stones singles and album tracks.

The Stones catalog is much bigger than the Beatles, but I think the Beatles catalog has higher highpoints if that makes sense.

The Beatles don’t have an album as good as Sticky Fingers. Perhaps a truncated version of the White Album could’ve competed. Abbey Road is close, though.

Hey I fully respect your opinion but I think it's without serious debate that the 4 albums of BB , LiB SF and EoMS stand as the greatest continuous set of music ever created. We can debate the others but no list should exclude any of those four. Rock music owes its success and growth in offshot genres to those works. Thank you to any and all involved in bringing the RS to the world.

so which version of aftermath is your favorite? the US version is i think awful simply awful but the UK version is far better. much like i love the album Between the Buttons (1967) Again the US version is simply dreadful but the UK version is fantastic. as for my top 5? i dunno i'd say my favorite #1 is Beggers Banquet (1968) Sympathy for the Devil has always been my favorite song of theirs Period weather it's released material or unreleased. so 2. i'd say Let it Bleed (1969), 3. Exile on Main street (1972), 4. Between the Buttons (1967) the UK version because it's just so different than your typical album, yes Their Satanic Majestic Request (1967) is one that really is out there but it's not among my favorites, that one i have to be in the right mood for it to listen to it. i don't think it's an awful album it's just one of those you have to be in the right state of mind and no i'm not talking about on drugs or booze to listen to it to enjoy it. 5. i'm having a hard time with this one because i dunno what to pick so i'd say it's only Rock N Roll (1974) is i'd say my 5th favorite. now as for my top 10 i dunno that would be i think a lot easier than my top 5. Some Girls (1978) is i don't think one of their best albums but that's just my own opinion i don't go to that one that often to be honest but it's not an awful album either if that makes sense

With only eleven tracks, the U.S. Aftermath is pretty redundant now, in my opinion. The original, as intended, U.K. album was re-released in ‘02, thankfully. Even Paint it, Black cannot salvage London Records’ butchering. The album cover isn’t as good, either!

Some Girls (1978) 7. Tattoo You (1981) 8. Beggar’s Banquet (1968) 9. Out of Our Heads (1965) 10. Goats Head Soup (1973) 11. Emotional Rescue (1980) 12. Black and Blue (1976) 13. It’s Only Rock ‘N’ Roll (1974) 14. Their Satanic Majesties Request (1967) 15. The Rolling Stones, Now! (1964) 16. December’s Children (1965) 17. 12 X 5 (1964) 18. England’s Newest Hitmaker’s (1964) 19. A Bigger Bang (2005) 20. Voodoo Lounge (1994) 21. Bridges to Babylon (1997) 22. Blue and Lonesome (2016) 23. Steel Wheels (1989) 24. Undercover (1983) 25. Interesting that you don't consider Beggar's in the top 5, not many or going to exclude that one. Personally, I think Exile is always overrated. Not bad by a long shot, but overrated. It's sloppy and druggy and murky which is both its strength and failure. For underrated albums I'd say Between the Buttons and Their Satanic Majesties Request. Lots to criticize but those two are the last time the Stones' musical horizons were pretty vast. After Majesties they settled into the kind of standard riff-rock that they really haven't deviated from since.
