I agree about Mick and Keith, but "nice" doesn't even begin to describe Taylor's guitar work. It's from another world. Without Jagger/Richards words and music he wouldn't have had anything to riff off of, but at the same time he took some of their songs to entirely new levels, both on stage and in studio.

Mick (the) Taylor was a far greater force in the Stones than anyone (especially the Stones themselves) would be willing to admit. Look at the catalog of their albums during his tenure; the 'Golden Age' of the Rolling Stones. Admittedly, he was far from the only factor, but I feel he never received the recognition for his contributions.

The Stones are the Stones: Mick and Keith mostly, with Bill and Charlie as the backbone. They would have carried on with whomever and still get along alright. But there is no denying that when Mick Taylor had joined, something significant changed that band. You can tell how influential he was after he left considering the Stones creative output dropped considerably in the mid 70's. Mick T wasn't a showman and was thrust into the party life, which took its toll very quickly for him. Keith loves the chaos, but Mick T seemed to always want to just get to the music and nothing else, I can see their personalities clashing often.

Mick Taylor is a great guitarist, no doubt. But the credit for the peak period of the Stones' music catalog belongs to Jimmy Miller. 1968 - 1972 had Jimmy at the helm in the studio. When he left, it went off the rails frequently, although "Some Girls" remains a notable exception.
@Hiwatt100W1

@@theartfuldodger935 I absolutely agree with you. Jimmy Miller was one of the greatest music producers of all time- just really understood how to combine instruments for a very rich, interesting sound. Beggars Banquet and Let It Bleed are just amazing albums. The Stones best period was the Jimmy Miller. I actually mentioned my admiration of Jimmy to his sister, Judith Miller, who is a very well respected journalist. I think that she got a kick out of that!

Like Brian before him, Mick Taylor gave the Stones a feel that Mick and Keith have very rarely been able to pull off on their own with this pivotal 3rd piece. Both Brian and Taylor brought out the best in their songs and I firmly believe, that both Jones and Taylor didn't get the song writing credit on many songs that they helped create. (adding the feel, licks and so on) Prove be told, name 5 tunes since Taylor and Jones left that have as innovative a feel as Paint it Black, She's a Rainbow, No Expectations, Under My Thumb, Can't You Hear Me Knockin, Moonlight Mile, etc) Some Girls was solid, but wasn't sustainable
@flyingburritobro68
@flyingburritobro68 2 жыл бұрын
Every band peaks - some sooner than others. The Stones peak was 70-73. You can’t sustain that level. They did longer than most. FYI Jones Sitar in Paint It Black is not a fresh idea - just stolen from The Beatles and then every other 60’s band. No Expectations is basic acoustic blues - no new groundbreaking there. Rainbow was dominated by Nicky Hopkins piano which made it decent. Not groundbreaking as pretty much a Sgt Pepper wannabe. Knocking has a cool Taylor solo in the second half but Richards riff drives the first half of the song. Great tune. One of their best. Taylor years the best by far!

This is technically true. Mick is much better. However, remember July 1969. They were "replacing" Brian. And "lead guitarists" were very important in the late 60s. But Brain was not a "lead guitarist". He was "The Magic Ingredient". Not replaceable. It took them 5 years to realize it, but The Stones didn't really need a "lead guitarist". What they really needed, apparently, was a "Keith Clone". And someone who "looked like A Rolling Stone". 40 years on, even though Mick was/is a far superior guitar player to Ronnie, looks like they should have hired Ronnie all along.

Taylor left the Stones because he did not personally fit in the group. But musically he added a lot of value, had an incredible coordination with Keith guitar and Mick vocals. Moreover, Taylor grew as a musician a lot when working with the Stones. All those aspects were not had in consideration when he decided leaving this group. Do not forget that Mick left the group and was not fired like Brian Jones was in 1969. If he did not make that decision, Mick could be currently rich, the RS could have delivered other awesome albums and he could have been considered one of he best rock guitar players in history. Horrible departure!!!

No exquisite artist mind has any 1000 manned supporters hangin around day and night as with around the Stones, to thank for anything. It's a miracle to create anything from geniousity when there is already 1000 supporters knowing everything coming up, before it had a chance to come up in the first place. A genious is choked by such living circumstances. You just have to close the door and don't let those mainiacs even knock the door. But to the Stones it seemed to have been normal. They wouldn't give Taylor a break. So he saved himself, in sadness of course, But to save himself a little something. He is lucky - the genious to get out staying alive. But it's a painful shame - to be honest - to see what Ronnie Lane can do nothing about what Micky Taylor did before him of all the songs. Now the Rolling Stones is a cover band playing Rolling Stones numbers on stage, pulling a feather by feather from the original rebellious charm to larger and larger stages and to less and less originality. You don't miss the cow, until the stall is empty. And no genious create any geniousity by the fire of thinking "I'm a genious" Geniousity comes from unsurveilled totally unexpected moments and for such moments and from setting creativity in total freedom of inpact or expectations. And you certainly don't need someone outside the door - fiery knocking Down the gaslight street now! P.S and what more to the embarressing part, even the sax solos created by Bobby Keys, performed by a school class, note by note, even Bobby Keys has passed away No trust to their artistic capacity It's not a musician band anymore. No room for a musician. A musican never play same as he did last time. And next female singer must compete with Lisa Fischers high capacity of voice. Lisa hated to repeat herself she told me on an informal talk midnight walk in Stockholm. I will write a song for you I told her as if no one ever did that before It's next embarressing performance failure. Rolling Stones is bank safe performance ! That's what it's all about. I want to see the naughty imrprovising band I remember from when I heard them first time. But it's not suitable for a person adressed as "Sir". What is sustainable is our need to confirm our dawning of discoveries and our dawnings of experiences of sensations. It's not the object that counts, but Pawlovs dog inside of us. And I am just as shameful, or still enthuisiasts like that. I stll claim Jagger was a betetr dancer when stages were limited in space and when he had no program for performance and it came just like out of the blue. That was the great CHARM and people loved exactly that. Now he get rewards for being a marathon runner "being so much 80 y o and all" Sit down baby Calm down and play the Blues, because life is a bitch and that's why we play the Blues.

In his Biography, 'Life' Keith Richards extols Mick Taylor a lot "Every Thing was there in his playing - the melodic touch, a Beautiful Sustain and a way of reading a song. He had a lovely Sound, some very soulful stuff. He'd get where I was going even before I did. I was in awe sometimes listening to Mick T., especially on that slide - try it on 'Love in vain.' Sometimes just jamming, warming up with him, I'd go, whoa. I guess that's where the Emotion came out. I loved the guy, I loved to work with him, but he was very shy and very istant." Page 303

All the bands that originated in the 60s and lasted for a few years underwent change. The Beatles arguably have three stages to their career. The Stones, too, changed. You can argue that the Brian Jones years were the greatest, and you can argue that the Mick Taylor years were the greatest. I do not believe anyone can argue that the greatest years came after that.

Mick and Keith were already nearing their peak writing years with Beggars Banquet, Let it Bleed, so when Taylor arrived the Stones were already kicking ass. Sure he added something , but too many people don’t connect the fact that the songwriting was already taking the stones to the top. So what he added was just icing on the cake. The rest of the band brought the meat and potatoes, guitar solos are great when they fit in the song but quite honestly, without a good song, it’s just musical masturbation ! And yeah all of us guitar players are guilty of it !

I agree fully with you Greg. And alone, Taylor just doesn't cut the mustard, he cannot deliver a song, a set of songs, he also cannot write sets of songs. He needs the backup, the structure.

Keith doesn't play lead guitar he is a rhythm player Mickey Taylor was the only lead guitar player the stones had and a damm good one. He introduced the stones to slide and Ry cooder brought open tunings. Without those two beggars banquet would have been it.

Keef was into open tunings from about Beggar's Banquet onward. There is plenty to support this in both his autobiography and his interviews. A lot of Mick Taylor's playing - even slide - was done in standard tuning. Ry Cooder certainly played a role on some tracks, but for a lot of us it was the Taylor/Keef chemistry which characterised the Stones' greatest work.

Thats exactly right. So many people talk as if the Stones NEEDED Taylor. They didn't. The guy was a fantastic player and their best music was made during his time but the core was already solid and many different players could've stepped in.

I think the difference is that Mick, as great as he is, is a sideman, whereas Clapton is the main man, as was Rory Gallagher. Mick could also put up with the Stones non-musical nonsense for a while but I don't think they could.

Between 1969 and 74 was the golden years for the Stones and the best albums with Mick Taylor but... But they decided to move different ways.. Black and blue was the choice album "Who's next" ( Not the Who)..Ron Wood was a good choice, great empathy in the stage, with the band and the public, is caracter much more close with Keith's one, the four having more fun between them, the shows are excellent... So more things.. Of course Taylor was a master but... But in the stage courner, doesn't move... Diferent times... Ron Wood is good player and front man too... The rest is a false polemic and lots of nostalgic stuff

The way i see it, mick taylor was the best but he was also at the best period of time so when woody started they were after another sound... Ronnie is very very talented... The man played with the birds, the creation, jeff beck and the faces... But when he got the job was the begining of the decline(drugs, egos....)

@Tama Kennedy Have another chewable, my friend - the talking head references John Mayall in the 3rd person; why could John Mayall do that? Why, indeed, would a musician of his stature host a show on the minutiae of someone else's career?
