I was typing in a very similar comment when I saw your post. Very true. Also, I really like your video production. Many people that have good information have very poor production knowledge that prevents them from communicating their topical knowledge. I'm always happy to see someone with both. 😀

Here in SW Idaho our property grazing area does not have any browse and mostly just weeds and grass. I have found 3-acres will serve up to 4 goats all year round. I do spoil them with sweet oats, corn and a bale of alfalfa once in a while. Any more than 4-goats gets them too close to the ground and they get sick with parasites, although a regular dose of ivermectin seems to keep them free from illnesses. My $0.02

I have one acre of meadow and have 3 small breed sheep and four bunnies by November it is well cropped, with tufts round fencing. Now December I am using 2 small hay bales a week but a quarter of that is just pulled. So I collect it before getting soiled and use for chicken bedding.

One farmer I know uses this formula for rotational grazing...In order to calculate which one is more profitable...1000lbs per acre, since different breeds weigh differently...

Do you think 2 female sheep, one male and their lamb would be good for 2 acres of 99% pasture? I’d be eating the lam in the late summer early fall. I’ve done goats but not sheep but they had 5 acres so it’s different this time around.
@rollingofarm
@rollingofarm Жыл бұрын
Yes, if you have good grass on the pasture that should work.

I have approximately 15 acres I have five sheep I had 9 but sold 4, , sheep are very social animals ( so are goats), you could easily put 5 or 6 per acre. BUT ! Weather's ( neutered male sheep ) cannot eat the same food as Ewe's and Rams, they can't have alfalfa because it causes them to get kidney stones and grapes can cause brittle bones and no sheep (neutered or not) absolutely cannot have plumbs of any kind. Just sharing the info. to other new sheep owners

good day friend....my house is on a square 1.5 acre with the house in the center. i want to fence the entire yard and put goats on the land. just let them run everywhere in the yard. im thinking it would keep the grass down. how many can i have? and is it a good idea to let them run the entire yard?
@rollingofarm
@rollingofarm 9 ай бұрын
The number would depend on how much grass you have in your yard and how thick it is. I can run 4-5 goats per acre on pasture with very good tall grass. Know that goats will kill any shrubs or small trees you have. If your yard is all grass, a few sheep may do a better job of keeping your grass mowed.

Good info. I'm looking at using a combo of goat/sheep to clear my wooded areas that have a lot of browse. Do you reckon electric netting is good enough for that or would I need to drive stakes and get woven wire?
@rollingofarm
@rollingofarm 3 жыл бұрын
Electric netting works well IF you can keep it from grounding out. Sometimes if the land is rough it is hard to keep it from sagging and touching the ground.
@kade1172

Also best to try and raise them in the net fence. We run a grazing division in our eco resto company. Some of our ewes don’t respect the fence when introduced later
@cjshadrick4607

You can use either , my fences were low and mine were getting out so I took bailing wire and built my fences hirer and it befuddled them cause they can't get over it now

Wouldn't the stocking rate possibly change through the year? You may purchase or have additional usually in Spring, and you sell and cull at different times. Maybe the land can support more in Spring and summer but you sell in the fall and winter?
@rollingofarm
@rollingofarm 2 жыл бұрын
On my property, 5 per acre is a number that works well year round. In the summer they can't keep up with grass growth and in the winter I have to feed a little hay. Running more in the summer would be very possible.
