Hearing from Mitski herself that she didn't officially write a song until she was 18 gives me so much hope. I'm 19 and trying to write original music. It's so hard. I'm never satisfied with the things I write and I usually stop before theyre done. And when they are done I never show them to anyone. I've always had this idea that all talented songwriters just "have it in them" from a young age and can effortlessly rattle off a new song in hours. I feel like I've missed the mark or passed the prime age for aspiring musicians. This makes me feel like I still have a shot at honing the skill and putting it to good use.

dont worry, not all artists have it naturally to easily come up with lyrics that are widely appreciated for what they are, and how they came up with it, and how they wrote it, it takes many artists hours and maybe up to years to write songs dont put yourself down too much

You definitely do have a shot, I’m in/was in kind of the same boat and one thing is that even though some people seem to “have it in them”, “it” is a very subjective thing and you no doubt, like everyone, have your own unique brand of intelligence, humor, authenticity and taste which will make their way into the music you make.
