Andrew Yang joined Julian Casablancas for a wide-ranging discussion on the second episode of his new Rolling Stone interview series, S.O.S. - Earth Is a Mess.
The conversation found Yang discussing his presidential campaign earlier this year, the differences between candidate marketing and corporate marketing, and also the reforms he would like to see to make the democratic process more fair and accessible. For Yang, the two biggest changes needed are opening up primaries and instituting ranked-choice voting.

The answer to Julian's question about why political marketing strategies and consumer goods marketing strategies differ is because of the target demographics. Old Spice wants young people to buy their products so they market in a way that appeals to them. Politicians for the most part do not focus their marketing on the youth vote, because youth basically never votes. In comparison older voters vote in much higher proportions. So it is a better strategy to talk about "health care" and things that apply to older voters because you cannot rely on young voters if you want to win

If citizens getting money in a crisis like in 2020 can be a lifeline and save families, jobs and the economy... then imagine how all citizens getting Yang's monthly freedom dividen or UBI when times are 'normal' will be great for people, create jobs and make our everyday lives happier.

Yeah, when you think about all the ways that this could help people, it's an amazing thing. Even people that are doing okay, think about what they could do with an extra $1,000 a month. Sure, to the wealthy that might be pocket change, but to the average person an extra $1,000 a month could go to paying off their home sooner, helping fund their kids college education, going into retirement savings, or even travel or supporting hobbies, which puts it right back into the economy. Personally, while I'm surviving fine right now, an extra $1,000 a month changes my life because it would really allow me to boost my savings rate, which puts me that much closer to being a homeowner.
@vnevala

Unfortunately, the corporatists and landlords aren't stupid enough to keep prices down when everyone's income rises. Imagine $1,000 a month more income when average rent rises to $5,000. Costs will simply rise to scoop up everyone's excess income. And the political class won't care because most of the wealth will still flow in their direction.

As you may know, Yang has his own podcast now, so he actively seeks guests talk to. In preparation for those interviews Yang really invests himself into reading and studying his guest's recent work. It'd be great to have Yang be challenged to going out of his comfort zone a bit and boning up on Chomsky's views which largely involve foreign policy. I am a career innovator and an ex finance professional. Frankly while I have respect for Andrew Yang I think he is asking for the right idea with the wrong systems and processes to support it. The reading list is Give People Money by Lowry. The reality is that basic income is not universal. It is a financial innovation that will eradicate poverty and remove destitution. It must replace the welfare system so that it is accompanied by dignity. And a new tax is not required to afford it. Lifting the poorest out of poverty with basic income is what we are capable of because we are responsible for their financial position. It is critical that people with this kind of power walk away from Bill Maher jokes about Ton Ford cufflinks (he would not be eligible) and instead ask for the right thing with the right technologies to support it. Especially in 2020 we must be tired of poverty. We must be tired of how it makes us look.
