Real Crusades History

3 жыл бұрын

Documentary on Rollo, the Viking founder of Normandy. As the Carolingian Empire fell apart, a new power would come to emanate across the Latin world from the Duchy of Normandy. The Normans, who would become Christendom’s chief crusaders, strangely, were rooted in the heathen Viking raiders that plagued France for generations. It all began with a Norse chieftain, a follower of Odin - Rollo, a seafarer from Scandinavia. Rollo the Viking, and the Norman colony of northwestern France, is one of the most fascinating and important developments of the medieval era.

Please do consider making a video about the environment of intrigue that the Byzantine Emperors had to deal with, one of the great What Ifs I have seen mentioned a lot in regards to the Crusades in the Levant is what would had happened if the Latin Western powers and the Byzantines would had cooperated better and more constantly but I find that notion contrary to the reality of the day, I think it was extremely hard for the Emperors to deal with outside forces with anything more than scepticism at best in most cases when they also had to deal with palace intrigues, usurpations, rebellious generals and hostile powers like the Bulgars and the Normans. Might be just just an impression but seems somewhat logical for example for Isaac Angelos to see Emperor Frederick with suspicion when he himself, Isaac I mean, had elevated himself to the purple by rebelling against the former holder of the throne, the dynasties did not tend to just end there but be extirpated violently by the next one. Do you think there is basis to say the Byzantine court was considerable more unstable that their counterparts in the western Mediterranean even going back to the days of the Justinian and the Heraclian dynasties? And if so how much of an impact it had in the Crusades themselves.

Wow such a great video! The Vikings once they became Christians were even stronger. On a side note its very cool that you mentioned the part where that rumor was spread about his young wife never having had the marriage consummated, because i once read about King Otto and (the source was taking a negative view as is so common today in handing European history and its heros) their story goes that She was very very young like 12 and they tried to make it seem like he was a christian who was a predator or something. They never bothered to mention the rumor about him waiting to consummate the marriage. Great Job 👍👏👏👏👏

What so amazes me about Rollo is that unlike the many other viking leaders whose descendants eventually vanished from history Rollo's descendants in fact became the Kings and Queens of England I once did research on it I traced back all of the English kings and queens and every time they go straight back to this man Rollo if he only knew that his descendants would become kings to one of Europe's most powerful Kingdom.

@david edbrooke-coffin lol made them tuffer lol the British isles were Celts famous warriors and the empire was expanded in part by them as well look to the Scots welsh and Irish throughout history from the welsh bowmen at agincourt to the Scottish regiments that fought at Waterloo we didn’t need any trespassers on our islands to make us what we are they only got a foothold because we were more interested in fighting each other than a common enemy

Im a teacher of History and though Im Hungarian I have always been interested in viking settlements. A couple of years ago I had the pleasure of visiting Normandy and there was a French Scholar of Normandic settlements who told me us who listened a funny story. It was about a viking warrior who followed Rollo to Normandy and his name was Kettil Thorson. In France the native French couldnt pronounced names like Thorson, Anderson, Johnson etc so after he had married a French woman he actually changed his name to Trouville. Now Kettil Trouville. Then his great grandson who never became a warrior but a craftsman who built churches learnt that most of Scandinavia around 1070 had gone from Paganism to Christianity. He was a religious man who felt he had a mission about helping these Norse learn about Jesus, So off he went back to his ancestors roots. He wanted being a part of building up churches in Denmark and Scania. (Now southern part of Sweden) After arriving at Lund He found out it was a bit difficult to have a sirname as Trouville in Scandinavia so he changed it . But not back to Thorson but Trouvilleson.

One riddle about the Vikings in Götaland (Gothia) along the land of Göta Älv (Göta river), is that there are no Viking graves found in that area. Researcher now know why, they were buried in the Christian way as early as in the 800's. So it seems this area was more influenced by the rest of Europe at that time. On the other hand, runes and signs of Thor still was in use a long time after. There is cannon (cannons obviously of a much later date) found in that area, that has both the Crucifix and the Thors hammer.

The were two Rholf's and they often get confused and meshed as one. One was Danish and one was Norwegian. Until they publish the genetic research from his son and grandson's bones.... we don't know who Rollo legitimately descends from, and therefor can sort the man from the myth pre Rouen. There is more research to say he was a Dane, if you go by earliest records, and the fact Rollo sent his grandsons off to Bayeux to learn the Danish language, as Rouen was too Frankish. So this story of Rolf ganger everyone thinks is Rollo, the man too big for the horse, descended from Norwegian More, may NOT be Rollo, first Duke of Normandy.

Was the previous reference the same location that Joan of Arc met her end? Given that that was 1431, they sure like to make an example of falling foul of religious ideals, lbe that late middle ages or any time since. Numpters!!!

I live in the north of England, within a 3 mile radius of me is a church built buy Roger de Busill who William the conqueror gave lands to after the invasion, remains of the castle they built and a Saxon church! My family has lived within 50 miles of this area since before that time. Still I know I'm not related to Rollo! So come on people lol, there was a flood of Germanic blood here we're a Germanic mungrel mix so don't get too giddy people.

The grant and conversion of "an independent and proud Viking warrior" turned out to be a blessing to Christendom as well as a concession to reality. Wisdom in a Christian ruler seeking to neutralize an enemy by legitimizing his power and bringing him into the Christian cause.

Apparently one of the possible origins of his nickname was that him being the youngest son of King Louis was not expected to inherit any territory to rule unlike his elder brothers so originally it was meant to mean something similar to Lackland rather than the alopecic but it eventually became that way; King Louis' efforts to secure an inheritance for Charles initiated a series of civil wars between him anf his elder sons and eventually between the sons themselves that marked the start of the long decline of the empire of Charlemagne, also with Charles the Bald a tradition of less than flattering nicknames for Carolingian kings was started, latter ones would be called The Simple, The Fat, The Stammerer, etc.

Great content as always. 6:55 the Scandinavians copied that tradition from the Germanic tribes. The Teutonic peoples have been following that particular law going back to at least the RES PVBLICA . That's what the ancient Roman historians like Tacitus , Julius Cæsar , Livy, etc. tell us. That's the reason why the Roman Empire from the Ottonian Emperors (AD 962) onward was always a patchwork of hundreds and hundreds of self ruled principalities . The Holy Roman Emperor himself stood atop of an Empire so decentralized, that the United States of America looks like the Soviet Union compared with the HRE .
