Having studied, both History and Archaeological sources about the Norse and now Anglo Saxon cultures, I would like to see some more information about Alfred's Navy. I have talked to Viking Ship experts but as it is explained to me, Anglo Saxon Ship types and Alfred's Navy, is still something of a mystery.
@Vorador474 жыл бұрын
i would guess they would be pretty similar, there wasn't that much difference between Saxons and Scandinavians (other than by that time, Religion) but they started out as the same people and diverged over time.
@coleparker4 жыл бұрын
@@Vorador47 I agree with your assumption. However, in some of the sources I have read over time, there is passage about the ships, paraphrasing it since it has been such a long time since I read, the ships were neither Danish (Norse) design or ?, but were such that Alfred thought best. Some descriptions of the ships were longer and had higher gunwales. I read one ship historian's theory that these ships were actually the forerunners of the later Dragon ships of the late 9th and 10th century.

A shame Cnut and William put the nail in the coffin for Saxon rule. Saxons fought so hard, and got so far. But in the end, it didn't even maaatteeeeeer.
@medievalgirl0024 жыл бұрын
Ah yes, but the Saxons had the last laugh, because Cnut's dynasty only lasted 2 generations, but a descendant of Edmund Ironside, the elder son of Athelred from before his Norman marriage went onto marry Henry I. Her name was Edith, and her daughter was the Empress Matilda.
@anglishbookcraft15164 жыл бұрын
Grumpy Historian most of the blows had been dealt though. English culture and it’s tongue were built by then on hating their own roots and hailing Latin culture and speech even till this day. The only way Saxons can become like we were is to go backwards. Get rid of the Norman legacy, rid English of these unneeded posh Latin words in our tongue and to start being fond of our Germanic roots. I don’t mean wiping yore/history away forever, but there needs to be an edwhirve to Anglo Saxon ways of life.

@DavBlc74 жыл бұрын
@@anglishbookcraft1516 Well, you can't rid of the Norman legacy, some of the legacy were still here in England, The book of Doomsday which is useful for recording lands, etc. French words put into English language, Three lions of England on red background in our Royal coat of Arms. Descendants of Norman conquerors mixed up with Anglo Saxons, Norse and Celtic all over Britain too. Normans also brought us Parliament and court of law too. The Normans gave us surnames like Smith, Jones, etc. Saxons had no surnames before the conquest. That is one of the good things the Normans gave us. English language would never have been completed with any French words in it along with Latin, Germanic, a bit of Arabs and Norse.
@mijanhoque17404 жыл бұрын
William did that as he was horrible but Cnut was a great ruler as he respected the Anglo-Saxon culture and changed nothing, his rule was harmonious. William on the other did not respect it and changed everything all together.

Twice they arrived, once they sacked and left, the second time, the Galicians burned their ships and they had to go inwards until they made an arrangement with the king to be allowed safe passage without getting their heads chopped off, on exchange of not trying again. 700's Hispania was WAY too militarized for the Vikings to get reliable profit, because, well, it was literally a territory at war. The king arthur was based on a celtic king and Charlemagne. Merlin the wizard was likely named after Merlin the bard who might have told a story in a way that seemed enchanting.

Remember that by making peace with Danes, those Danes then became spies and would have given Alfred vital information on how their Dane fellow fought and tactics. Unfortunately the monks keeping records would only site that Alfred was the hero. these kings had help from the other side.

I hope Assassins Creed Valhalla doesn't desecrate king Alfred's memory.

@cyberkk37254 жыл бұрын
It didn't, he's portrayed exactly how he's described. Clever and god loving.

Saxons were raiding Britainnia & even attacking & stealing roman merchant ships in the English channel from mid 200s ad eventually invading & settling in Britain using long ships similar to those the Vikings used several centuries later. Saxons had same pagan gods until christianity eventually spread throughout the country.

Even though Alfred was a great king he could never defeat Hagar the Horrible in battle.
