You youngsters! :D The 80s are supposed to be "missed" - it wasn't "anything special", as much as this game tells you that "everyday life is dull". Looking back is where it's at - that's where the magic comes from (even though it was "shitty"), and I can confirm Stålenhag's paintings are legit because that's what my childhood was like (apart from mechs, ruins/monsters) with all the Volvo cars, dull Swedish beauty and exploration happiness etc.

The 80s were pretty boring, all told. Computer games were terrible (and you knew it), RPGs were still obscure, television was bad, no internet, and HP Lovecraft was out of print (in the UK). Things only really started to pick up in the 90s. That said, there's definitely a magic about the 80s but it's largely down to nostalgia and the fact that boredom forces you to use your imagination. Now things are much more fun and interesting, but the tradeoff is you don't need to use your imagination nearly as much. Oh, and because of the lack of media entertainment, you likely read a lot more books back then.

I tried playing an emulator of one of those full-text RPG adventures I used to love in Middle School on the Apple II+. I exclaimed out loud...."How did I ever have the f*cking patience to PLAY this sh*t!?"; I guess because the Atari 2600 got old after awhile....

As others have said the 80s were really boring. I remember spending my time with very little to do and if you wanted new music you had to tape it off the radio (which we did on a Sunday when the music charts would air) and then swap tapes with friends or save up for weeks and weeks then go into town to buy singles on vinyl or tape. Clothes were pretty fun though and we wore loads of t-shirts and jeans with fabric prints on and a bunch of day-glo. But the weirdest thing, speaking as a kid of the 80s, was that it really didn't feel like it was anything special at all. In fact one of my biggest memories of the 80s was worrying about nuclear war as the Cold War was happening at that time and we had loads of films shown at school about what to do in the event of a thermonuclear explosion. I mean, what can you do? Pretty much nothing, so it just made us all worry that we were on the brink of annihilation really. There wasn't anything that made it "80s" as it was just normal mundane life, but after a while it was clear that it had a real vibe to it through film, music, and popular culture. I'm glad it's having a bit of a renaissance at the moment; it did pack a lot into those 10 years! :)
