I started mcing a game of Apocalypse World shortly after you guys started to play the ruleset. I can honestly say that it's pretty easy and a lot of fun. So thanks for playing the game. Emberly will be missed.

Ah I'm thrilled to hear that! I wanted to show off how easy it was to play and get into, so I'm delighted my ulterior motives were effective.

The only thing I'm having difficulty is finding a time that everyone can play. Maybe that's my fault being a novice MC for not making sure before we started playing. Oh well such is life.

thtrnerd221 This is a universal challenge! My RL games tended to meet once every 2-4 weeks due to scheduling challenges. I really do think that most groups that play don't play every week, so no need to feel bad about missing that "standard."
@thtrnerd221
@thtrnerd221 11 жыл бұрын
***** That's the "standard" that I'm used to playing by. The other games that I'm in currently were meeting once a week and all the ones I've been in the past have also. I guess that's maybe where my frustration lies. Anyways, keep up the awesome work and I can wait to see the next game that's played on roleplay R&D.

Thank you all for freaking awesome entertainment! Steve is the best DM, I have ever seen (maybe - just maybe - met by Chris Perkins when operating his own system) and Maggie, Wheat and JP are so different, yet on par with their creative storytelling. This is better than 90% of TV shows I watch - and I only watch top 5% of what's on TV...

JP, Maggie, Marcus and Steve you all made this rollplay show the best one Ive seen. It was so fun at times where everything just flowed as water and things just went your way, untill one roll fuck thinged things up. You all hade som brilgent things going on and it made me want to get home so much faster after work just to watch this show. Thank you all so much it was awsome, AWSOME.

Watching some of JPs previous Rollplay shows made me want to play RPGs, but watching them play Apocalypse World ( & Dungeon World, which I had actually watched before) made me want to DM a game like that about as much as playing it. It just seems not just easy and intuitive but also really fun to be able to build a framework and then encourage the players to fill in the details and sometimes even allow them to completely change the story.

This was an awesome RollPlay to watch unfold, even for someone like myself who hasn't rollplayed before. I loved the world you guys created and that it was something you formed together instead of just one person saying this is how it's going to be and that's that. It was so dynamic and the characters each of you made really interplayed well. I loved how Evan was a total badass and didn't take crap from anyone yet he was still there to help when people needed him to instead of blowing them off. Emberly was awesome because...well basically liked DJWheat said without her they would have basically died a lot sooner. She was the reasoner of the group and a pretty solid character all around. And as for Bubba, he was the game changer and I loved it! JP got so creative with him. Also, the MC Steve did a great job narrating the story and creating the npcs, and I loved how you were able to give the characters so many options and based on their decisions just took the story in a totally different direction than I thought it would go. The only thing I would say I didn't like was the harm system for the reasons you talked about in the video and how it limits you in combat and how you become dependent upon your dice rolls to carry you.So if you start rolling crappy well nice knowing ya! lol But I just want to say thank you to all of you for showing me how awesome RollPlay can be and I definitely be watching all the future shows from this amazing group! and hopefully introduce others to it as well.

What Maggie said is totally right. Something people forget when they watch these things is that you guys are playing characters. Like you said, they won't always make the smartest choice, but the choice that's right for their character. People get really offensive about choices at times, but if they only considered this more then they'd probably understand.

As a past DM and a past player, watching this was insightful and made me want to get back in to Tabletop games again. This particular system was so incredibly fast and loose that it reminded me of everything I missed about DnD; the roleplay and the surprises that good players and DM's can provide. Also the OOC interactions that come about, too. Can't wait for more, guys! X3 I suggest Niel(sp) as a fifth, if he isn't too busy. He's pretty damned inventive, and even as a PC you never know _quite_ what he's going to do. >:3

Let me preface this with the fact that I am somewhat of a scholar and historian of the older D&D versions so yeah... Building a character to be good at something started with AD&D to make it so everyone had the same experience. The original D&D ruleset wasn't even complete by current standards as it required the DM to basically home rule a lot of things. The many Basic D&D versions where similar but filled out enough to be played out of the box. The biggest thing that caused the shift to the current form was skills as before the predecessors of skills your character was just assumed to be able to do adventuring stuff. Skills made it so that wizards no longer try to jump ravines as jump is a cross-class skill where as before you just jumped the dang ravine cause your an adventurer and they do that kind of stuff. Of course technically only with 3rd edition did skills really cause the current ethos of needing the skill to be able to do something as in AD&D the skill system was just for adverse conditions but because of how it was written many a player was faced with a DM that said they couldn't light a fire cause they didn't have the fire starting skill.

I really enjoyed this rollplay more than any other on this channel so far, so much in fact that I decided to MC a game for myself. There were a few things that annoyed me though. Quite a few times I noticed Steven not giving the players the benefit of their rolls (a core tenant of AW), for instance Bubba rallying people to kill Look(Luk?) or Evan frightening the non-infected gang only to have them shoot at Emberly anyway. I wonder if MC Lumpkin actually noticed. He is still my all time favorite storyteller in a Roll play though.
@StevenLumpkin
@StevenLumpkin 11 жыл бұрын
Yep, this is hard! In my defense, I could say things like "The infected frightened by Evan don't attack HIM... but they could still attack someone else!" ... But the reality of the situation is that it's hard to always give the players 100%! I definitely always try to make their successes (even partial) be beneficial to them, but it's a tough thing to do. As a narrative game, I think it gives me enough gradient in response that I was on the right side of the fence most of the time, but maybe I wasn't as fully supportive of the players in some circumstances as the roll deserved. :)
@TheAoihoshi

***** Thanks for the reply! I will probably end up rewatching the play through of AW trying to pick up on the things I really enjoyed about the style of MC'ing that made this so compelling for me. Do you have any tips for a person just starting out with the DM/GM/MC role of roleplay other than following what the book tells you to do? Any media you took inspiration from other than Cross when building the atmosphere and scenery of AW?
@StevenLumpkin
@StevenLumpkin 11 жыл бұрын
TheAoihoshi I run by the book! It's great advice. Just remember to keep building tension to a climax, then back off a bit and let them rest... then ratchet it up again! Inspirations... not a ton for AW, because I haven't watched a ton of post-apocalyptic movies, actually! But 28 days Later, Children of Men, Mad Maxx.... anything that strikes your fancy, really!
@TheAoihoshi

***** I noticed you guys mentioning the Juggernaut, which is an awesome custom playbook from the AW community. Any other custom playbooks you guys included? After reading through a ton of them I found some pretty great ones like the Beast Master (you get a huge beast of the appocalypse) and the Wolf (the exact opposite of the Solace)

I would love to see you guys run Dogs in the Vineyard. That's another narrative-style indie game, set in the old west. The GMing load is super-light, and it brings hard choices to the fore in a very similar way to Apocalypse World. I think you'd really like it. My only concern is that the characters really need to give a fuck, and JP doesn't, so it might not be his cup of tea.

I really dislike the combat system in apokalypse. It just feals too loosely. In addition I dislike the gang concept too. That just feals very strange. In dialog and other social interactions with NPCs the system is great. Also this psychic maelstrom thing is really cool. All in all it was fun to watch, but it's good that R&D is moving on. 4-5 weeks is the perfect duration.

Well, you might say that combat is kinda loose, but it's kind of a point. Do you remember all those movie inspired finishers Geoff used to do in the begining of Solum. Like shanking a goblin with broken spear after waterboarding him with wine, or all those weird shanenigans with dual-wielding knives and breaking them in the skull? Do you noticed how there was none of that by week ten? Vincent wasn't proficient with spears or daggers so doing those thing was inefficient and stupid. Unfortunatelly it was fun. Heck,it feels like half of what Geoff is doing in DH is pointing out ridicolousnes of ultra realistic and thight Warhammer combat rules. You know, i press a barrel of my shotgun to his chest and pull the trigger, so obviously i hit his right leg, because system is also balanced for long range combat that never happends.
@novice1016

Large46 Maybe that's just because I love having clear cut mechanics with specific results but that's just me. Don't mistake that for my lack of love for the campaign 'cause I really love this campaign, short but very sweet.
@StevenLumpkin
@StevenLumpkin 11 жыл бұрын
Large46 Yep, the AW-based games do a great job of empowering players to do exactly that stuff, whereas the more simulationist games make it a lot harder. That's part of what I actually wanted to show off through doing R&D! It's nice in some ways because it lets you be very narrative about combat, but it does lack that concrete understanding of the exact consequences for your actions. That's the tradeoff!
@naeviaus
@naeviaus 11 жыл бұрын
In re to combat: I dislike the usual D&D combat - it#s your turn, Greg deals 4 damage to X, Katy deals 2 damage and now the orc is dead - because it seems that's what those systems focus on: number driven combat. While AW is a bit clunky in that regard, it's so much more free form.
