Estate (shooting brake) bodywork on a car not designed for it can be exquisite. Both the cars in this snippet are lovely despite the lines not being 100% right. The Shadow suffers as did the Citroën BX estate, with the rear-door glass falling away and upsetting the look of the extended roof. The D pillar on the later model is slightly chubby.... But the sheer madness of the concept forgives these awkward spots. A Lynx Eventer is lovelier than an XJ-S. And these strange shooting brakes are lovelier than the sedan. Strange, but lovely.

That Shadow rebuildt as an estate appeal to me for some strange reason. It shouldn't, I suppose, yet it very much does. But that Spirit next to it... Crikey, what a bodge job(!).

Earliest ones are usually named after the power of their engine such as 20hp. Then moved to Silver Ghost, Phantom (various models up to the modern VIII) Silver Wraith, Silver Shadow, Corniche, Camargue, Silver Spirit, Silver Spur and various modern ones such as the Dawn and Wraith.

The comment of a suburban churl. The owner of a Rolls Royce doesn't care what the hoi polloi think. Rolls Royces have been used as dignified transport for monarchs but also as ambulances, gun platforms, balloon chasers, doctors' coupés, estate cars, etc; you bought your chassis and bespoke whatever body you wanted.

I consider the Silver Shadow shooting brake to be in considerably better taste than some of the vehicles that currently wear the Rolls-Royce livery. That SUV and the modern saloons are a case in point. They look as though they were designed for American rap artists. So very sad!
