Darren-Edward Oneill to cut a long story short, I met an ex Shackleton crew not long ago. The flight engineer told me a story of a time they were flying at low level deep down in a valley. As they went around a corner they realised that they were flying down the wrong valley and a tall mountainous landscape lay right in front of them in close proximity. He went on to tell me that with everyone startled the Captain frantically opened up the power to overboost and climbed at VX (the steepest angle climb possible). He said the noise was incredible and at low airspeed they just scraped over the top of the terrain... They made it, but only just, and it wasn't the sort of flying they usually did...
@wingnutzster
@wingnutzster 6 жыл бұрын
That's an amazing story and one that had it been in many other 4 engined piston types would have been very different I'm quite sure. She was a growly old girl but she was beautiful! We had Shacks in service along our coastline as recently as 1986 when they were withdrawn from service and only because of the mandatory spar life but 1766 went on to fly until she crashed in the Sahara (another amazing Shack story you may be familiar with - check out the story here - well worth it kzbin.info/www/bejne/jnTInoaLbNB0msU ) and 1722 is still airworthy and based in Cape Town although her crew less so and soon there will be none qualified to fly her, we are treated to regular engine runs at the base which are always well attended spectacles.

Chad Cole actually they're not. The RAF used them in squadron service powering the Avro Shackleton untill 1991. After which they become available to the general public, in the form of the Griffon 57 and 58. Although technically not a Spitfire version of the engine, modifications can be made to allow fitment into the Spitfire airframe. A few of the Griffon powered aircraft flying today are powered by ex Shackleton engines, meaning they can always have a spare lying around just in case...

A technical question: Is that prop feathered or not? Cause it doesnt look like it, but I assume it is feathered, otherwise the carriage would definitely not be able to hold the engine in place, or would it? But why is there still so much wind blowing - Does that also happen with feathered prop, just to a lesser extent?

@julianneale6128
@julianneale6128 6 жыл бұрын
MrNotleo I've never read anything to the contrary. The wing was also later used with success on the Supermarine Attacker with a top level speed of 590mph. Can I ask where I can search to find such information of the limiting speeds for the Spiteful? Of all the piston engined fighters of the time the Spiteful was the fastest and most comprehensive, as in it was a complete fighter. The single high speed P47 that was extremely specially modified and prepared was not. With guns and everything else unnecessary removed for that task... Although it's likely it did achieve 505mph (which is an incredible achievement), it essentially wrecked it's engine and turbosupercharger in the process and most definitely was not a standard squadron aircraft. The other high speed squadron fighter that was completely operational was the P51H at an impressive 487mph. The Spiteful on the other hand could do 494mph on a Griffon 100 series (2stage, 3speed supercharger). All with guns, gunsights, along with all other complements, completely ready for squadron service. The only reason they only made 19 of them was because of a new invention called the jet.

I would guess partly because the blades are shortened, but also because the pitch of the blades is close to neutral, so they don't move much air as they spin. The more you angle them, the more air they 'scoop' in and move. Some propellers can be set in neutral for no thrust, and move even in negative thrust (so they blow air the opposite way, like forward). Many planes have adjustable pitch propellers, so you don't regulate speed on revolutions per minute alone, but regulate the pitch and run the engine at an RPM where the engine is best suited for the power needed.

@nerd1000ify
@nerd1000ify 10 ай бұрын
The technical name for this is a contra-rotating propeller. The two sets of blades are driven through gears in the front of the engine, one propeller's gear set has an extra idler that reverses the direction of rotation. The rear prop's shaft is hollow and the shaft for the front prop passes through the middle of it. Having two sets of blades spinning opposite directions causes the two props to cancel out each other's torque reaction. That makes the plane far more controllable on takeoff. Additionally there is a small gain in efficiency, normal propellers induce a whirling motion to the air behind them that basically represents wasted energy. By having a second propeller turning the opposite way the whirling motion is cancelled out. Finally, the more power an engine makes the bigger the propeller required. This becomes a problem because a very large diameter propeller would hit the ground on takeoff or landing, unless the aircraft's landing gear was unreasonably long. The alternative is to add additional propeller blades, the early Griffons had a single 4 bladed propeller but as power increased they had to replace it with a 5 bladed propeller. The contra-rotating propeller has a total of 6 blades (3 per propeller), and thus can absorb even more power than the 5 bladed design. The downside is increased weight and complexity, and a bit more noise than a normal propeller of the same size.

That has been done - well, almost. Jay Leno has a one-off Bentley-style car powered by the predecessor of the Griffon, the Rolls-Royce Merlin. It's a big car, weighing in at over 3 tons, probably closer to 4 tons when fully fuelled and carrying passengers. In principle it might be possible to swap out the Merlin and replace it with a Griffon, but I'm not too sure it would fit - after all, the Merlin is a bit of a tight squeeze, even in a car that size. The same engine was used in tanks as well, mind.
