This engine was owned by my father at one point in time in around 2014. One time, we took it to the schools' open day thing and there were horses in the area a few metres away with children on them. We decided to get the merlin running and once it was, the horses went RACING away with the children on them. We weren't allowed to run it again until the horses had left. This engine is now visible in the Perth aviation museum.

Do you have any information on its origins?

A wonderful feat of engineering that engine was. Designed and built in %100 secrecy during ww2 in an underground facility.

I thought running without a prop load was bad for these engines
@Vore6675 жыл бұрын
Still much better than running with prop trough flak.

Actually its a PACKARD version, note there is no name on valve cover. "Real" Rolls had Rolls Royce Cast in valve covers Cross the "T's" and "Dot" the i's.

The engine is a mix of Rover Meteor with some Merlin parts. The lack of RR name on the rockers does not necessarily mean Packard; most engines manufactured at the Trafford Park and Hillington plants weren't named either. Meteor I and III engines are known to have smooth covers as well. However all Packard rocker covers were manufactured with a cast 6-digit number plate towards the top/rear of each cover, and these are not present on these covers. The prop shaft rotates opposite to a Merlin, and the rear of the engine is all Meteor (no supercharger or wheelcase, Meteor mags, no up draught carb). Meteor crank rotates opposite direction to a Merlin.

These ROLLS ROYCE MERLIN engines NEVER ROARED NOT even at FULL REVS. Well, not my ears they PURRRED. I LOVE the MERLIN engine & the most aircraft in which it was used the FAMOUS SPITFIRE.😉👍👍👍

This motor in the P51 Mustang produced the greatest fighter of WW2, yes, even better than the nazi jet fighter IMO.

High Vis workclothes, bare feet, rollerdoor up so garage and house fills with exhaust gases, in the driveway surrounded by neighours. Only in Australia. ( l do it with motorcycles, wish l had a Merlin or Griffon, that would really piss-off my dickhead fun-sherriff neighbours - yeah!)

For christ sake put a prop on it to give it some load.
