We have a front load washer and dryer with spring loaded doors - you push it to close and push it again to open - no fine motor skills or pulling required. I can just hit mine with the side of my knee/wheelchair and it pops open. I would also recommend a low table about the height of your knees to put the laundry basket on - then you can load the basket on the table and slide it on to your lap rather than having to pick it up from the floor.

I think Cole did a great job for doing all that for the first time! I wonder if a laundry basket with wheels might be helpful. That way it can just roll along with you while positioned directly in front of your feet. I'm not sure if they still sell the ones I used to have years ago, but hopefully there are still some out there. In any case, I admire that you didn't give up! And even if you couldn't/can't do everything, it still gives Charisma a break. For example, I bet she'd still appreciate only having to turn on the washer if you loaded it and tossed a laundry pod in there beforehand.

@ROLLWITHCOLEANDCHARISMA I'm a C6-C7 complete and pretty close ability wise, but a little stronger than Cole. 1. Transferring on incline, I use arm rest to push off of. Decline is just getting over the fear of falling and hopping in one motion. 2. Doing chores like laundry or dishes is a lot less challenging with the aid of a chest strap on. Also use Tide Pods as others have mentioned. 3. Taking the sheets off with the head of the bed in sit up position is way easier. Pillows, bite the pillow and pinch the sheet with both hands and pull. Hope this helps! Proud of you dude!

Cole, you did a good job and Charisma is such a good motivator! My advice would be to put padding around the metal that is in direct contact with your skin when using “the claw”, something that doesn’t add a lot of weight but prevents it from pressing into the skin like that. Also, padding around the pincers could prevent it from ripping through whatever you’re picking up, like the plastic bag or perhaps the sheets even. This video was really interesting and it has my mind racing for ideas and solutions, I’m autistic and I get hyperfocused/excited whenever I see scenarios that could be made easier or more efficient. I would love to see more of the solutions you come up with as you explore ways of greater independence and I hope you continue to make videos about it!

I’m not a SCI survivor but am a stroke survivor(a left hemiplegic). I do my bed linens in 2 loads. One with just the fitted sheet. The second with flat sheet and pillow cases. I had more than one set of sheets. So I can take my time washing the dirty ones while making my bed with a clean set. This way there is no hurry getting laundry done. I think it’s great that you are striving for more independence. Along with that comes confidence in your ability to overcome any challenges. Charisma knows as an OT that sometimes it is finding creative ways to make things adaptable to your unique abilities. It is finding what works for you. I’m glad you can ask for help when needed. I used to be very independent before and asking for help was hard but I have learned that my pride only gets in the way. There is no shame in needing help. You are so lucky you have wonderful support surrounding you. Thanks for your inspiring channel. I think it humbles people to understand the challenges of having a disability but that the person inside is just like them. We all want to be accepted, encouraged and loved. You are both such a positive light in the world. Keep on this journey called life. Keep smiling and stay positive as you always do. With much love from Vancouver, Canada❤️❤️

Thank you, Cole!! People have no idea how much more effort it takes for quads and even paras to perform “simple” every day tasks. What takes 10-15 minutes for the able bodied can take an hour or two for an SCI person. Thank you and Charisma so much for bringing the awareness you are.
