What I am confused about is that in all states, if you are found to be disabled under the Social Security Administration's Social Security Diability Section, then you will receive monthly deposits into your checking account (or any account) for the entirety of your disability. They calculate the exact amount based on how much you paid into the system before you became disabled and they cap it at $3,000 per month. What they do NOT do is factor in ANY of your assets (house, car, stocks, other investments, savings accounts, etc.) In fact, social security disability income (which is federal and therefore trumps ALL individual state laws) is an entitlement, not some kind of favor they are doing for you. The SSA might "audit" you every 5 to 10 years to make sure you are STILL unable to work full time, but that usually involves just filing out a form and providing medical records. In addition, once you have social security disability income approval, 6 months later you are entitled to Medicare AND Medicaid. And regarding Medicaid, if you are disabled, once again you could have millions of dollars in the bank & Medicaid has to pay the 20% (of Part B Medicare) regardless of your "assets." Medicaid USUALLY does take assets into account, but NOT for federally recognized disabled people. You are also entitled to Part D Medicare (prescription drugs) for free (you might pay small copayments at the pharmacy but only at the start of each calendar year, and these amounts are minimal (less than $10) -- and by March or April those copayments disappear. So I am not sure why this's doesn't seem to be the case here with Shane. I have handled multiple social security disability cases and making sure the client then gets Medicare and Medicaid, regardless of what state they live in. Medical expenses are basically zero if you have both Medicare AND Medicaid. You DO contribute a premium per month for each (Medicare's premium is usually around $100 per month and is deducted from your social security disability benefit before your disability check gets deposited into whatever account you designated for direct deposit). As for Medicaid, they just send you a bill every month for its premium, which can range from $10 per month to $40 per month. And that's it. With Medicare and Medicaid, you can see any doctor you want, whenever you want, and your medication is free once you get to Aprilor May of each calendar year. . My clients have mostly been in Massachusetts, but the State is irrelevant because the system is federal. And Medicaid doesn't have the option of turning you down based on your assets-- whether that be your house or a million dollars you have saved in your banking accounts. So, I must be missing something here, though I can't imagine what that is. Does anybody know?

Actually a similar thing applies in the UK, I'd recommend watching the video 'I lost money when I got married' by Jessica Kellgren-Fozard (and all of her videos because she's great) but yeah, minus the insurance thing there still isn't marriage equality here.
@shonapushedplay43264 жыл бұрын
Nope. There are very similar penalising policies in the UK system. Your partner's income is also taken into account and you can't have savings over £6k before they start making deductions. Never mind how hard it is to even claim. The NHS is brilliant, our benefits system is not.
@janettehutton86344 жыл бұрын
I’m disabled and I’ve never had to pay for any bath seats or milk shakes or specialist equipment. I agree with the point about being penalised if you have money in the bank or you have a greater income through marriage, yes that does happen. Overall I think we’re better off that’s the USA though.
@YourElfx4 жыл бұрын
I'm in the UK and have a disability. I respectfully disagree with you. The PIP system is so stressful, humiliating and degrading that I have chosen not to claim it these past years, for the sake of saving my mental health. Every other week there's a news article about how it's literally driven someone to end things. As for the NHS, 18 month waiting lists to see doctors over basic issues, and many medications and treatments I can only access privately. You don't really see how bad it is unless you are sick most of the time.

Thank you for this video. My parents were married for 33yrs. They were in a terrible car accident leaving my mother severely disabled. My father lost his leg as well. 3 years after the car accident my parents had to file bankruptcy and my dad has to legally divorce my mother and basically hand her over to the state in order for her to continue with her health care. It was so sad and we were all so devastated that this was our only option. My dad has to give me power of attorney because legally he couldn’t make decisions for her since they were discovered. My mother lived 6 yrs after that and then passed away. However in our hearts my parents were still married. The law with benefits and medical expenses tore my parents life apart.

This is a topic that really hits home for me. I went on disability 7 years ago due to health issues. I had to leave a career that I loved, and I was not ready, mentally or financially, to retire early; but there was no choice because I could no longer work. I went from having a good job that I loved to living below the poverty level. I went to get a food card because I couldn’t afford groceries; I qualified for $16. I had state insurance which was completely free, but after 3 months they took me off of it and forced me to have Medicare, which did not pay for the treatment I was receiving at that time, so I had to pay cash. Still only got $16/month for food. Then I found out about a local program that would pay for my rent and some utilities. However, that got counted as income, so that little bit of “extra income” i thought I’d have each month was taken from me and I lost the $16 I had for food. You can’t win! I really feel bad for families that are feeding children. I don’t know how they it. The system is a mess, plain and simple. If you are on disability and live under the poverty level, there should be something to help you. I worked all of my adult life and raised my 3 children with no help. When I had to go ask for help, it was so hard; I learned how to swallow my pride. I am grateful for EVERY BIT of help I have received, and I do not have a sense of entitlement. But they make it really hard to get by with just the basics.

Matt Brown You act like you are some expert on what women are like, but by your comment alone, it’s obvious you have no clue. I hate to break it to you, but “real men” actually enjoy their show and don’t pick it apart like a conspiracy theory. It’s really not that hard to see that their relationship isn’t as foreign as you make it out to be.
@cinnamoncat27314 жыл бұрын
Matt Brown Your ignorance is astounding. And you’ve proven my point. You have no clue what you are talking about when it comes to women. And when you lump “all women” together, you sound like an even bigger asshole. It probably hasn’t occurred to you yet that their demographic is not limited to the comment section. Sure, women are the majority of the comments. But then you have all these insecure guys in the comments as well, that are self proclaimed geniuses on women and relationships who think they know better, like yourself. It’s apparently difficult for some men to get past their ego and jealousy that an intelligent, beautiful woman is in love with a disabled man and not an abled bodied man. But I bet, since you are quick to invalidate women’s opinions, you won’t think that it applies to you. If you think this is some media stunt, it says a lot more about you than it does them. If you are thinking that disabled men like Shane can’t have “hot” women be attracted to them, again, that’s your own problem, and your own ignorance talking. I could just as easily say that all men like you “say the same crap” because you do. You’ve already proven it. Your attitude to towards women is frankly disgusting, and so is your small minded way of thinking.

Matt Brown Why do you care so much about this? Why do you honestly give a fuck about Shane’s life, his past, his exes, any of it? What enticed you to come watch their videos so you could waste your time being an ass? The fact that you are actively searching for some bullshit that proves your conspiracy theory about their relationship says that you’ve got too much time on your hands. Maybe go live your own life, and stop worrying about what other people are doing. It might help your shitty personality. Also, there does not have to be some hidden agenda behind every couple that chooses to document their relationship, or people who just like sharing their lives on the internet. You are so wrapped up in the idea that this is some riddle you have to solve, and eventually you get to be the one that exposes someone’s evil plans. *Congratulations, you’re not special.* Get out of your fairytale land where you always have to be the hero. This whole thing really is not that deep. And you’re just dragging yourself down a rabbit hole. Also, I am so glad that despite not even knowing, you just assume I’m a woman and call me “dear.” That way you can continue invalidating my point because “women don’t know anything.” Right? Benefits are are messed up on the UK to. When I get married I will get PIP to help with caring and mobility. But PIP can be really difficult to get. You two are inspirational and a credit to the world.

Zippy you don't have to wait until you are married to claim PIP.

@@autumnrain7342 That's good, I was just really concerned in case you were not claiming what you were entitled to. Good luck! 👍

People with disabilities also also get shorted and can lose their aid if they inherit money from the loss of a loved one! These things NEED to change!!!

When I got married I was receiving social security. I was told to switch to social security disability because it doesn't take into account anyone else, so that's what I did. Then I got a job where I knew I made too much so I called and told them I'd be making too much. They told me they couldn't just stop paying me and that they would have to do an investigation first. When I received my next payment from them I figured they had done the investigation and decided to continue paying me. TWO YEARS LATER when my husband and I finally got married and had just moved into our own apartment I get a letter from them claiming I owed 10,000!!! I was fuming!!! I called and told them that I had originally called and told them to stop paying me and was told an investigation would be done first. They told me that my phone call was proof I knew I shouldn't have spent the money they were sending! I tried to talk to a lawyer but no one would touch it because disability laws are a slippery slope and they weren't confident they could win! Oh and funny enough when I called the second time fuming they were suddenly able to stop the payment coming to me immediately 🙄.

The same thing happened to a friend of mine. She had to get a job because she wasn't getting by with the SSI and she called them and they told her they were going to keep sending her the check just a tiny bit smaller. When the checks came in they were the same amount and a year later they sent her a letter saying she had an appointment and they told her she had to pay back everything she'd been getting after she turned 18yrs old...

Because if she was working it meant she didn't need to be getting an SSI check, even though she called them and told them and they said they were still going to be sending it to her every month.

The government systems like the SSI are such a quagmire! How can the average American work through such a mess!!

My LTR guy saw you two on his FB feed and said "Isn't that the couple you watch on KZbin? You know, the ones that just got married?" And I looked and sure enough there you two are in the thumb nail linked to the Today article! Love it!! I was proud of you two!! Being a long term subscriber and fan makes you feel defensive of those you care about and proud when you see them come out on top. I am sorry so many people have such strange or mean reactions. I am with you Hannah and Shane!! I am glad you found a great life mate within each other

Thank you for bringing up this insurance/disability problem to everyone's attention! I myself and my husband are dealing with this very same issue and have been for 10 years now! You're exactly right it's not fair to us and the government definitely needs to do something about it! My husband gets disability benefits and I don't, we have to pay out of pocket for everything for me! When we actually went to try and get government assistance the worker there actually told us to get a divorce! Plus they still couldn't guarantee that I would receive any assistance then! We're definitely NOT getting divorced! We've been married for 16 years and have a 14 year old son. People like us need help and can't get it because they're so many people out there getting government assistance fraudulently! It's very unfair and sad to say the least!

Thank you for this. I learned something new. I'm an American living in Sweden. We lived in Apple Valley, MN so not far from you! I've lived over here for 20 years and have many times tried to explain the lack of healthcare for those who are less advantaged. It's hard for swedes to comprehend and seems heartless. I love Minnesota but can't imagine moving back anymore. Congratulations! I hope you have many happy years together. ❤️
