The score by John Barry was my favorite part of this film. 6:34 "Journey to Ft Sedgwick" gets me every time. DWW was written by one of Costner's friends, who had a bit of a falling out with Kevin over Hollywood work relationships. After being estranged for some time, Kevin's friend returned with this story in hand and Costner was so impressed he made the film. He pushed his friend to excel and it paid off for both of them. Oscar Winners Both. 20:36 The Lakota language expert on the film appears several times as the older native lady, her name was Doris Leader Charge. It is a dialect of Lakota Sioux. The character of Stands With A Fist is very loosely based on the life of Cynthia Ann Parker. Cynthia was a young child when her pioneer family were raided by Comanches and she was taken as a slave and then adopted into the tribe. This was a common practice.

Buffalo are not extinct, The people spoke Lakota Sioux during the movie. This movie won many Oscars and was huge when it opened in theatres.

technically they are bison, not buffalo, they are different. In North America we have bison. Buffalo look slightly different are common in Africa and Asia.

@@WakeMeSoon Well in the movie they said buff or buffalo and we have many roaming around here. Technically we called them that always for decade and both were never extinct.

One of my favorite movies, saw it in the theatre when I was about 8, was brand new. The language they are speaking is Lakota. Parts of this movie were filmed not too far from my childhood home, in the Black Hills of South Dakota and Wyoming. I remember my family going to watch the filming a couple of times.

5:27 It’s hinted that he had syphilis, which can lead to mental deterioration. Further, he’s been passed over for promotion, he’s at a remote outpost, and many men were driven to madness. From a storytelling point of view, this is the last severed connection between John and the rest of the world. He now can’t be traced where he’s going.

John Barry's fantastic, room-shaking score won a well-deserved Oscar...as if I had to tell ya!

Did you notice Kicking Bear (Graham Greene) often plays on the Canadian tv show The Red Green Show? He's an explosives expert with four fingers named Edgar Montrose. Great comedy!

Winner of 7 Oscars including Best Picture. It was the second Western film to the Best Picture Oscar. The first being Cimarron in 1931 and the last being Unforgiven in 1992, until the neo Western crime thriller No Country For Old Men would win for Best Picture in 2007.

One of my favorite films (i may or may not be biased due to living in South Dakota) Also probably one of the most accurate portrayals of the Native American vs US Expansion conflict (IMO), other than maybe Wounded Knee.

The Last of the Mohicans (1992) is another movie with strong cultural representation of indigenous peoples and featuring some of the same indigenous actors as in this movie. I hope you'll consider reacting to that one as well.

Loved this reaction so much!! With regards to them shooting Wes Studi’s character during the battle, I think they were safe from shooting each other because their enemy was mounted and thus sitting a little higher than everyone else.

Two other Kevin Costner movies that I hope you'll consider reacting to in the future: Waterworld (1995) and The Postman (1997). Both were ambitious projects, though they were not received with the same fanfare as Dances With Wolves (1991). (There were production issues and budget over-runs among other things.)

If you want more Stand With A Fist, and another tie in to Deep Space 9, I highly recommend you check out Battlestar Galactica starting with the mini series and moving into the 5 season season, the reason why you love DS9 so much is the writers from DS9 moved over to finish writing the last seasons of DS9 in all its epicness. BSG is my favorite show followed by DS9.

During the Civil War, both armies were still using muzzle loaded rifles and cannons. The projectile for a muzzle loaded rifle was made of soft lead. The projectile that was used was a .58 caliber minie ball. When the projectile entered the body, it would destroy organs and shatter bones. Being hit in the arm or leg would require amputation due to the shattered bone. There was no amount of emergency surgery that was going to save your life in that period of time. There are photos of soldiers from both sides who survived the war, and the photos show the amount of damage a minie ball could do to the human body. If you have any interest in the American Civil War, it is worth it to get a look at the photos.

Waterworld has a history of a bad rap, but undeserved. Great action, scenery (the ocean, mostly) and a stirring score. If you can watch the extended version, it's even better. But it's very long, like this one!

This is definitely one of the best movies Kevin Costner has sarred in. But if you want the very best you have to be daring enough to check out another long one. It is Oliver Stone's masterpiece, JFK. And it should be required watchng for everyone living in our times who's been sedated into thinking there's no such thing as the matrix. It has an unbelievable stacked cast of a-list actors (including John Candy in a straight dramatic role). It has a unforgettable and mesmerizing John Williams score. And even after watchng it the full 3 hours you'll wish it still had 3 more hours to go. Its that good.

The horse is spelled “Cisco” as in “Francisco”. Not like “Sisko” on ST-DS9. But maybe Sisko is named after Cisco? 😂

Good movie .. I would have some things changed though.. for better historical accuracy.. such as the tribe not knowing about shooting guns..by 1860 they had long since known..and had them through trade often..
