@@ernestolindley1659 "Parasite is different." Thanks for the laughs. "Parasite", despite being an amazing movie, is Bong Joon-ho doing what Bong Joon-ho has been doing since breaking through on the international level: being savagely critical of caste societies and their numerous hypocrisies, only this was the time the Academy actually noticed that good movies have been coming out of South Korea for some time after their offensive ignorance regarding "Burning" and "The Handmaiden". "Roma" was a unique film in Alfonso Cuarón's filmography and was only shafted out of Best Picture because Netflix had the audacity to make movies just as phenomenal as the major six studios. If "Parasite" had been distributed by Netflix, the Academy would have done the same to it.

imagine the best “foreign” film category is soooo way better that all this american hollywood films nominated for best picture
@aaliyahstark79484 жыл бұрын
I’m confused as to why foreign is in air quotes? While agree many foreign films are better than American nominated films, it doesn’t change the fact that they are foreign, which means they shouldn’t be in air quotes.
@joseluisanaya57383 жыл бұрын
I think this changed the way how foreign should be seen now as ‘International’, as the category was changed by The Academy, thanks to that speech and “ROMA’s” win to ‘Best International Film’ (instead of Foreign Language’). And yep, you’re so right, that year proved that foreign/international films could be better than the ones made in Hollywood in fact, all the nominees and the finalists as well (from Colombia, Kazakhstan, Denmark, South Korea) were so much better. And next year... an International/Foreign Language movie took home ‘Best Picture’ Oscar (“Parasite”)! I don’t have the truth in the mouth, but I believe that year led the way for “Parasite” to triumph at the Oscars.

I understand where you’re coming from. International films have a huge disadvantage when competing against other English speaking films at the Oscars! International films needs the strong financial backings from major Western distribution companies that would spend millions of dollars towards their Oscar campaigning (like Netflix did for “Roma”) since it’s incredibly expensive to market those movies to as many Academy voting members as possible and unfortunately, way too many great international films are often snubbed at the Oscars if their distribution company cannot afford an expensive awards campaign!
