I have never seen a wrestler show worse sportsman ship in my 30plus years in the sport. His coach should be ashamed he didn't bench him sooner. I though Iowa was better than that. Defending his outright assholery because it "brought people into the sport" is blazingly stupid

Such a good match. At 35 secs left DeSanto makes that subtle whip/shuck attempt/fake, just enough movement for RBY to grab that leg. That's all it took to decide the match, razor thin difference in styles really.

The difference as I see it is RBY stays relaxed and is able to react with tremendous speed on counter attacks as a result. Iowa wrestlers push and pull and push some more. Seldom relaxed and that takes a lot of energy and sometimes sends a telegram to the opponent regarding where you are and where you plan to be next.

We're really just seeing a subset of RBY's skills. He practices MMA, can adapt to freestyle and just has freakish athleticism. RBY has IT -- that certain air you recognize immediately, like "Who's THAT guy?"

Every loss for desanto gives me such pain, I’ve followed him since the beginning of his career at Iowa and grow to be my favorite wrestler. That last take down hurt a lot, my heart was pounding the entire match and he deserved the win, he always works the hardest on the mat, but keeps coming up short.

Guys I'm no Iowa wrestler, I couldn't qualify for NAIA Nationals in late 80s early 90s pretty much maxed my potential started in 7 the grade with 18 matches entering HS, I'm no Duane Goldman. However I watched every match from Pac12/Big 10/ Big 12 and D2 Nationals, Live 5 miles from NJCAA powerhouse Clackamas CC in Oregon, watch them all the time. I'm just reporting what I see, Hawkeyes losing in similar fashion IMO injury, gassed, not changing game plan, no off season 🤔. I'm all ears?

What in the world was that at 1:18? Post their hand on the mat and then step on it? Oof. Other than that Desanto put up a solid effort against RBY this time. Still wrestled a bit cautiously it seemed (for Desanto anyway) although maybe that's respect for RBY's ability as a counter wrestler. That said though Desanto has nothing to hang his head over for this match. Losing on a takedown in the last couple seconds against the defending national champ in the semis isn't anything to sniff at.

Quite honestly, all of the Desanto/RBY matchups were simply RBY’s to lose: He has all the tools, adaptive techniques and future freestyle/MMA secondary skills at his disposal. This is Desanto’s last day on the server: He's +forward with no alts, one loadout and zero buffs. Respawns are off.

DeSanto has come a long way. He may not be an NCAA champ this year, but he is championing himself. His progress as a person these past few years is phenomenal and his wrestling as shown has been world class. I grieve with him on the loss, but I hope that himself and his support system sees how many amazing things he has done. I understand the self defeat... But man, the growth!

Look at how easily RBY got his hand out when desanto stepped on it, he didn’t put a lot of pressure on it, just enough to maybe get a setup and it didn’t work but if he had wanted to rlly be an ass he would stomp on it RBY and wouldn’t have gotten his out from under his foot that easy

Man if desanto would have developed a strait on double leg takedown he would be hard to beat the way he get wrestlers out there stance especially in the 3rd and reduce the scrambling to convert the takedowns. I hope he continues to wrestle freestyle after this.

@@brutledge3507 I wouldn’t say all that Iowa is known to convert there guys to top freestyle guys plus he don’t have to worry about top and bottom as much since your on your feet longer in freestyle, with the right training partners to elevate his skills he can do very well and not that morale victory’s mean much, but fix was a silver medalist and desanto isn’t that far behind.

@@pkthunder0119 Iowa hasn't developed many top level freestyle wrestlers since about 1992. Desanto couldnt get it done in folkstyle and wonr be even a little competitive on the national stage. He doesn't have the grit,.the match where he quit showed everything about who he is, a bad sport who cant win without trying to hurt or disgrace his opponents. Hes a bully wrestler who cant handle it when someone calls his bluff, hes done for.

I appreciate DeSanto's intensity and he's a great wrestler, but it seems his strategy is all centered on hanging on the opponent's head as much as he can. It doesn't seem to work against the best, and he's not found a way to change.

If he had been the 3 seen he would have faced fix who beat him this year and in all the previous matches. He may have got the wrong seed but he was going to have a tough time making the finals no matter what seed he got.
