@@jabronisauce6833 Octavian being considered the first emperor is more of a historical convention than a hard fact, mostly because he finished the late Republic civil wars. After winning it and monopolizing power, Octavian did his very best to preserve the appearance of a Republic, make the Senate happy, but at the same being the final arbiter in the most important issues, and having enough money to fund anything ever needed. But no one ever told the common citizens: "Hey, we are no longer a Republic and now we're in an Empire!". @samlund85434 жыл бұрын
Cameron It’s a real crazy story that perfectly demonstrates just how nuts/cruel Caracalla was. From what I remember, Caracalla and Geta were brothers, and when their father died, he wanted them to both be co-emperors. They both hated each other, so their mother brought them together for a meeting at her home to work things out. As they were talking, a group of armed men burst in and just straight up stabbed Geta to death, right in front of his mother. I can’t remember for certain, but I think there’s even rumors of Caracalla laughing at his dying brother. Either way, Caracalla went on to become a tyrannical murderer during his brief reign.

Gotta say, you missed a big opportunity with Valerian. There are two contradictory stories about him in captivity, one is that he was forced to swallow molten gold and the other is him being flayed alive. You could have put the scene in game of thrones where Drogo gives the golden crown to Viserys or you could have used any one of the Ramsay Bolton torture scenes cause the flayed man was their sigil.

Tominus could have also done this with Crassus, if he was doing a video about important figures in the Roman Republic. The Parthians supposedly killed Crassus by pouring molten gold into his mouth, though the validity of this claim is dubious.
@kammiejr Жыл бұрын
@jimmywhisper A valid point. Crassus is known to have died in the Battle of Carrhae against the Parthians, but you are right about the story of gold being poured down his throat being a myth. The story comes from the Roman historian, Cassius Dio, who lived two centuries after Crassus's death, and so it is not a contemporary source. Therefore, it's most likely that Crassus was killed unceremoniously by the Parthians, along with the Romans who attacked in Carrhae.

Gallienus thankfully has gotten a bit better reputation these days. I mean he did do a lot, and tried to defend as much as he could. It's just that he couldn't be everywhere at the same time, and at that point every frontier was under attack. And he survived gods know how many usurpers. Personally I rank him in the top ten emperors(but on the lower end) because he really did do everything that he could. Aurelian gets the credit for saving the empire, but Gallienus reformed the armies in a way that it was possible. I put him above guys like Septimus Severus, since he was just basically a military dictator that couldn't handle his spoiled kids.
