The Battle of the Teutoburg Forest, described as the Varian Disaster by Roman historians, took place at modern Kalkriese in AD 9, when an alliance of Germanic peoples ambushed Roman legions and their auxiliaries, led by Publius Quinctilius Varus. The alliance was led by Arminius, a Germanic officer of Varus's auxilia

Nonsens. Były znacznie ważniejsze bitwy w historii o których dzisiaj mało kto pamięta-- poza grupą specjalistów. Bitwa przypomniana i rozreklamowana w XIX wieku - epoce romantyzmu i nacjonalizmu.

He'd be a traitor either way: If he turns on Rome, he's a traitor. If he helps Rome, he's a traitor to his ancestors. I personally think he did the right thing to preserve the Germanic tribes. After this disastrous defeat, Rome decided that it's best to use the Rhine as the natural border between the Empire and the Germanic tribes. West of the Rhine, every nation speaks a Romance language, east of the Rhine, it's Germanic and Slavic languages.

There are at least two, main mistakes that led to the Roman defeat. Arminius knew Roman tactics and he knew that he couldn’t have won against the Roman legions on an opened battlefield. The Romans were led by Arminius into the ambush. The path on which the Roman legions marched was very narrow because on the right side there were swamps. The film doesn’t mention of a very important feature, the very long palisade that the tribesmen built on the left side of the Roman marching troops. Thus the Romans couldn’t manoeuvre like in an open battlefield and were slaughtered piecemeal. The site of the battle for many years was thought to be almost at the most eastern part of the Teutoburg forest, more or less where the tall statue dedicated to Arminius is now to be found. Actually, the findings of the palisade, coins and even a Roman knight helm showed where the actual site was. It’s more west and the place is called Kalkrise.

Tacitus, the Roman historian describes so well the attack of the Germans in the forest of Teuteburg, the violence is such that the Roman legions are completely decimated, destroyed and massacred in an indescribable way

And the Germans still talk of this victory 2000 years later. It is central to their identity. However, the Romans returned not long after and we all know how that ended.

The paths through the Teutoburg Forest weren't wide enough to support Roman Columns that wide and deep. I believe when they were ambushed as I recall they were only two columns wide.

ROME'S REVENGE The battle of Idistaviso was the revenge of the Roman Empire against the Germans, after the defeat suffered by Varus, in 9 AD, in the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest, which gave the world the certainty that the Romans could not be attacked with impunity, and that sooner or later every offense would be repaid with a greater offense. The concept was very important because if one emerged unpunished from such a ferocious aggression, which was also based on betrayal, as was the battle of Teutoburg, the subject peoples could try to emulate Arminius' army. In 16 AD one of the greatest generals in Roman history, the very young imperial legate Germanicus, did what the Romans had not yet managed to do for 7 years: he managed to beat Arminius in two great battles: the first in the plain of Idistaviso, the second in front of the Angrivarian Wall, both between the right bank of the Visurgi (Weser) river, the surrounding hills, the large Germanic forest and the marshes further north. The Roman victory was clear, without major losses for the Romans. The fighting fought continuously from eleven in the morning until night, while the slain German enemies covered the plain with their corpses and weapons for at least ten thousand paces. Finally, among the remains, amazingly, chains were also found to bind the Roman prisoners, confident as the Germans were of being able to renew the victory of Teutoburg. Germanicus' soldiers, on the battlefield, acclaimed their general Germanicus but also Tiberius Imperator and raised a mound on which they placed the weapons of the vanquished, as if it were a trophy, and an inscription bearing the names of the vanquished peoples: the Cherusci, the Fosi, the Dulgubins, the Lombards and others. Rome was avenged!

It says that the battle lasted for 3 days. In the first day, much of the army marched without even wearing the complet armour in what supposed to be a "friendly teritory". So imagine the surprize....After the first day it was just a battle of surviving with the roman army broken in several groups, exausted, herased and without a leader...The trap had been to well prepared.

Let’s get it right … Arminius did NOT betray his Roman brethren … he was Cheruscki German and was taken ( along with his brother Germanicus ) as tribute (aka: slave) back to Rome as a child … he was never ACCEPTED as a Roman because of his germanic heritage although he bided his time and learned all the Roman military ways and through perseverance he made it to a position of authority and “trust” … the Roman propaganda did NOT work on Hermann the German (Arminius) … however, his younger brother Germanicus drank the Roman “Kool-Aid” and kinda sorta became an honorary Roman !!!

imagine the field day the German metalsmiths would have had... German warrior: "Klaus.....Klaus. we are back home, the battle is over" metalsmith: " uuuurghh, i have not many materials left and running short on iron , how much repairs do i have to do??? German warrior: "well, we killed them all so there's probably more than 200 tonnes of iron scattered on the ground if that helps..." metalsmith: "LET'S GOOOOO!"

This is THE battle that made Arminius famous. After this, the Romans returned and massacred the Germanic tribes and that was that, even though the Romans were never too interested in the land beyond the Rhine.

@@cmd7930 What ON EARTH ARE YOU SAYING?? Are you american? You clearly have no idea. Or did you not know there are a couple of dozen CITIES in germany founded by THE ROMANS? Do YOURSELF a favour: educate yourself before talking XXX. Look up cities like Koblenz, Trier, Cologne, Bonn... Are you ok? Or do you get your information from mickey Mouse Magazine? Don't confuse lack of absolute interest in Germania with the fact "they couldn't conquer them". After teutoburg the Romans returned under Tiberius and totally SLAUGHTERED the Germans... erasing their villages off the face of the earth. I certainly wouldn't want you as a "history" teacher. You haven't a clue, have you!!

The march was probably difficult. There was only path, rarely open terrain. The marching columns widely dispersed and slow in movement. Long uncovered flanks, very bad weather and continuous skirmishes weakened the Romans. Once the Romans were in retreat, they were routed and probably all killed. To this day, the location of the battle is not clear! Basically, the battle route was very long and ran in the area of the Wiehengebirge. The total loss of 3 legions plus escort was so serious that further conquests were refrained from.

Seeing the battle going South, Varus says to his bugler, "Should I have you give the Fall Back or the Retreat command?" Bugler, "General, may I suggest the Run Away command?" I love reading the comments and replies, except for one problem. I only know three languages. British English, American English, and Austrian English. I'm currently learning Indian English.
