I've always thought there was something very Greek, more particularly Pythagorean, about the Holy Trinity (or triangle). I congratulated my priest on having gotten through his Trinity Sunday homily without once saying 'hypostasis'.
@alejandrovalenzuela3772 жыл бұрын
The reason it sounds very Greek is because it is a Greek idea. NeoPlatonists combined their idea of God as The One and mixed it with the Jewish (Biblical) concept of God. The trinity is not a biblical doctrine as it is not based on the teachings of the apostles. It came about after the Hellenistic Christian Fathers combined their philosophies with Christianity.

The Great Commision would like a word with you Mathew 28:19 "Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit," plus all the trinitian formulas in Paul's Epistles example 2 Corinthians 13:14 " May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God,and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all." And the didache which is a loose copy of mathew, plus all the times Jesus refered to the father and the holy spirit as beings clearly seperate from himself and each other. the trinity was always there what exactly the trinity meant was question for christians to wrestle with until today.

In Acts 18, Paul takes a Nazarite vow with other men from the church in Jerusalem. In Acts 20, Paul changes his trip in order to make it to Jerusalem for Shavuot. Check out NPP, New Perspective on Paul by James Dunn, and the Radical New Perspective on Paul. The traditional concept of interpreting Paul's letter through antinomian lenses is changing.
@sjappiyah40712 жыл бұрын
Quick correction that’s not in Acts 18, that’s in Acts 20:21-26, and he himself didn’t take the Nazarite vow, rather he purified himself with men who did take the vow, and he payed for their expenses. It was meant as a symbolic act that James (the brother of Jesus) to do, to demonstrate that Paul did not abandon the law/rituals neither advised Jews too, but rather understood that it was justification and that the gentiles didn’t need to participate. I agree with you main point though, the view on Paul is outdated and modern scholarship is changing it.

There is a basis in Jewish religion for Arian and later Trinitarian ideas tho. The "Angel of the Lord" is talked about in the Hebrew Bible as a being which can manifest on earth and through which God acts and speaks - in first person - and people interacting with it say they have heard and/or seen God, but besides that identification of the two it is also clear they are not the one and the same, being that they talk to each other and one is sent by the other. Add to that the personification of God's wisdom in the wisdom literature, plus the 'son of man' in Daniel, and you get the basis for Christian theology which divinizes Jesus, including most importantly before his birth. Of course it helped that the contemporary philosophies of Middle Platonism and Neopythagoreanism had already developed basically the same theology, saying how God doesnt simply create the word, but acts through a kind of secondary divinity which is emanated from him, which was already incorporated in Judaism by Philo. There's a book by the Jewish scholar Alan Segal called Two powers in heaven, which talks more on this.

Trinitarianism specifically arose out of Jewish theology of the time. Please look at scholarship such as Alan Segal's Two Powers in Heaven, Daniel Boyarin's the Jewish Gospels, and Benjamin Sommer's Bodies of God.

xUncleA123x Yup ! Plus Philo of Alexandria a Jewish 1st cent Philosopher is literally the first one to mention the term “trinity “, in reference to God, his Logos (Angel of YWHW) and his Holy Spirit. Now to be fair, he had a more Arian view of trinitarianism as he believed the word and spirit were *created* aspects of God, however it was certainly a form of Jewish trinitarianism prior to Christianity.

Might want to check your take on the gospel of John. Much modern scholarship ties it deeply with the sectarians at qumran, expressing a deep knowledge of pre-70 Jerusalem, a preocupation with ritual purification, and a variety of other deeply Jewish ideas. Many scholars consider it the most Jewish of the gospels. This is a major shift from the previous consensus you echo of it being late and greek.

It is plausible that Trinitarian theology is a product on ambient Mediterranean Greco-Roman religious thinking. But it's also just as reasonable to consider the Christian orthodox tradition: that the Apostles, confused by the Crucifixion and Resurrection, turned to their Hebrew scripture to understand what this all meant. For instance, the writings of Paul, probably the earliest extent Christian texts, are replete with citations of Jewish scripture, of which Paul, a student of Gamaliel, was an expert, probably quite unlike most of Jesus's family and fisherman followers. Much as you have said here, Bart Ehrman haș suggested a progression through the Gospels: Mark shows adoptionism, god through baptism; Matthew and Luke show god by birth; and John shows eternally exiting God. This certainly makes sense but it actually does not conflict with either what the Tradition says (iteration with Hebrew scripture and divine inspiration to understand the seemingly incomprehensible) or with your comment that John has the least to do with Judaism (meaning, increasingly, Rabbinic, post Temple Judaism). However, as is well known, the first words of John are "in the beginning" and the intention to create a second Genesis is clear. The Gospel of John is not the writing of a Greek pagan, but instead of a Jew, imbued with the culture of Galilean 2nd Temple Judaism.

Since you brought up MSG and garum in this video, here is my comment. When you ferment soy bean or fish, the bacteria produces all sorts of rich flavorful amino acids of which MSG is merely one of the components. The MSG sold in stores is completely purified MSG (either eveything else in the fermentation process gets filtered out or one uses genetically modified bacteria who are programmed to only produce MSG). Therefore, I would not equate garum with MSG, not to mention that concentrated MSG isn't good for you anyway. Many people who don't know how to cook adulterate their food with laundry scoops of MSG (shudder whenever I see that happening).

Christianity was the utter rejection of Roman emperor worship as well as the tendency in some Jewish communities to place rabbinic tradition over the scripture it's based on (Christians of course not being the only Jewish movement that didn't see eye-to-eye with the religious elites of the time.) The concept of the trinity and logos/memre/Word was already being developed as a means to describe the indescribable One God which the Rambam also described as a Unity rather than a single digit or object.

@@davidschalit907 Man take your sectarian blinders off and have a real discussion. I never even implied Rambam had any sympathies with Christianity. But he infact did describe the One as a unity not a singularity and anyone who does view God as a mere singularity is limiting and attempting to divide God which is basically what leads to paganism and idol worship. This is why the wisest among the Jews, Christians, and Muslims understand the One as a Unity. A very rich tradition among the Jewish people is Kabbalah which extrapolates on the Dynamic nature of the Unity.

That "Jesus a literal aspect of God" is not exclusively only in the Gospel of John, that makes it- just like you said " The most un-jewish"-, but it is also in others Gospel, such as in Gospel of Luke : Luke 5:21-24 (KJV) " And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, Who is this which speaketh blasphemies? WHO CAN FORGIVE SINS, BUT GOD ALONE? But when Jesus perceived their thoughts, he answering said unto them, What reason ye in your hearts? Whether is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Rise up and walk? But THAT YE MAY KNOW THAT THE SON OF MAN HATH POWER UPON EARTH TO FORGIVE SINS, (he said unto the sick of the palsy,) I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy couch, and go into thine house."
