Watching this series is like refreshing the Roman history (or ancient history in general) while learning completely new things about Jewish history and culture. I'm really looking forward to see how it will grow in the future. I wonder haw many episodes might it take to reach the modern times? It's probably hard to even estimate at this point.

Just found your channel via JJ, very well done, props to you. I know you've done some Israeli history, would you consider doing diaspora stuff? SHUM cities and the Rhineland Massacres, Spanish Inquisition, various later pogroms, Khazars, Himyar, Adiabene, etc. Could also actually cover some diaspora groups individually with videos, could be interesting (though only to Jews lol, but I presume that's who the channel is directed towards).

What’s the source for Bar Yochai students turning him into the Romans (Syrian governor). There are some great books by Binyamin Lau on this period of Jewish history but I don’t remember him mentioning this although he could at some point. So far I’ve only read the first two volumes. Thanks man and great work again!

I very much enjoyed being Yehuda haNasi. Worth adding that the decision to codify the oral law was controversial, since it had been passed down from generation to generation without being written and some felt that should always be the case. But it was clear that the debates of the previous centuries were making it impossible to go forward without putting it on parchment. Ironically, the codification of the oral law led to what many consider the petrification of the law as well. I have heard it said by many, including other Orthodox Jews, that the law is supposed to shift with the situation and the times far more than the rabbis are telling us now. But we are where we are, and it's not likely to change.

i have a question? Do Jews still await the Messiah?
@SamAronow
@SamAronow 4 жыл бұрын
Religious Jews, yes! In fact, there was (and in a few very religious circles still is) a lot of religious opposition to the creation of Israel because re-establishing a Jewish state was perceived as doing the Messiah's job. Also Lubavitchers believe that R. Menachem Mendel Schneerson the Younger *is* the messiah, despite having died in 1993.

Jewish tradition has it that Bar Yochai passed away of natural causes. The Chatam Sofer makes a mention of this and uses it as a rationale for the celebrations of Lag Baomer, which honors Rabbi Shimon more than any other Jewish sage of that time...

Oy, that endless bait and switch with the messia. According to Lebovovitch, a potential messiah comes regularly, but he can only become the real. messia if the people at the time are ready. And so far, they have never been ready.

I don't know how true this is exactly, but from what I've heard, the incident where Caracalla massacred everyone at the reception for the wedding between himself and the Parthian princess is what inspired the Red Wedding scene from Game of Thrones.

I am sorry, no evidence of the account of Judah HaNasi meeting up with Septimius Severus and you conveniently not answering means that I don't take this channel seriously. It's important for settling a dispute with Yigal Bin Nun who claims that Judah HaNasi and Yohannan Ben Zakkai did not exist.
