So I reported him to the FBI, with the phone number, pictures used, his location (that I managed to track down...) and nothing, I heard nothing from them! I also tracked down the person whose pictures were used, because I suspected he was being scammed by the same group and wanted to warn him...

If you're dating online, chat for a day or two max but then meet in a public place for a full meal and a social activity (such as a museum or just a coffee and a conversation) *within* the same week. If they can't meet you within 2 weeks, stop all contact with them until they can meet you in person. You want to keep your emotional distance. If they cancel last minute or delay, block them. If they ask for money, report them. Do not pay for your date and don't let your date pay for you. If you like them, meet again. Look for signs that they are trying to hide their identity. The victim shaming in these comments are just awful and cruel… If you actually listen to what is being said instead of just judging blindly, you’d realize that she isn’t handing over her bank account and ssn to the guy. These scammers are a part of a large 24/7 operation (many times themselves being victims of the organized crime leaders) that enable them to play the long game on many victims simultaneously. They don’t do the old “can you wire me some money to help me out?” anymore; instead, they gain trust and then manipulate ways to get people to enroll in what they think is an actual crypto or non-crypto investment platform that looks and feels like the real thing. They then make it seem real with simulated gains and losses until they pull the plug… anyone could fall victim to this - please stop the blind judgement and cruelty… what exactly are you gaining from the cruelty? You’re just helping the wrong side by doing that…

Greed/financial gain seems to be a part of the "romance" in most cases. The "victims" very often believe they are going to get free money in these cases. In more than half of the cases, the "victims" like to claim that the romance bit is what motivated them, while it seems to me, that the "victim's" own greed is very often the biggest problem.

These scams always have a greed factor. Most scammed skip over that part. But there's always a bait of a high value man and a distorted self worth of the victim. In some ways, these scams are scamming a scammer on their own turf. The reality is that a high value man isn't fishing for relationships on dating apps. That should have been the first alarm bell that went off in her mind. The second is a high value man has no need of the victim's money regardless of the story they spin.

I agree with 95% of what you said. There are still quality men on dating apps. The problem is that today, there are 10,000 times more scammers on the sites than in years past. I met a wealthy, famous doctor on dating app. We met up the first week. I dated a local politician, a race car driver, etc. Many women meet great men online. I know several. @@AFAskygoddess It's your own words that you have dated many wealthy men but have to be on guard if someone does the same to you. It's your words not mine. Look at these women who get scammed, they are not doctors, lawyers, they are just looking to 'upgrade' or add to what ever wealth they have. They are simply greedy and get scammed by a year long word salad just the same game they would play. The warning signs apply equally just not the same.
@AFAskygoddess

My first response was correcting your statement... and I quote...."a high value man isn't fishing for relationships on dating apps". Wrong. Some are. Maybe we are defining "fishing" differently. I read it as in the dating site Plenty of Fish, where I assure you that two millionaires I personally know did meet and marry because of that site. Perhaps you should have said "catfishing" instead of " fishing". Words are important.

Just because one has a high degree in a certain field, doesn’t mean they are “smart” about everything in life and won’t fail in any way. I think you are very ignorant, unrealistic, and especially arrogant to believe otherwise. My sister has a PHD and was involved in a relationship where she was abused and put up with it for years, she became an alcoholic for a while because of it. Why wasn’t she smart enough to know better because of her PHD? So, according to you, people with PHD’s should never make dumb decisions and lead a perfect life? Solomon, in the Bible, was the wisest man ever, but still made many mistakes because his “flesh” overruled his “wisdom.” How could that happen to someone so smart?! 😐
