Mykhailo Romanchuk is one the fastest 1500m swimmers the world has ever seen. Let's take a look at his technique including the very unique 'karate chop', that may actually work to his advantage.

Dressels hand goes thumb up in his 100 and 200 stroke on his breathing side as well. I sometimes teach it as a drill so that swimmers don't push down on that hand to get their head out. A lot of good swimmers lose their catch completely by taking the stroke early and pushing down to breathe. Last with the wide kick is that it IS a high drag position. But a high drag position isn't bad if it's propulsive. Afterall, isn't propulsion just applying force to a high drag position? When you set a high elbow catch, you're just trying to put it in a position that will not move in the water so that you can push against it. Same thing with his big kick here. The key to doing these well is to minimize the amount of time you stay there. So his legs don't go really wide for a long time, they are in line for a long time then snap out and back together really fast, sort of like a breaststroke kick.

Yes, but also that is his breathing side, so he is not pushing up, just gliding better. The other hand actually goes a bit sideways and thats the leaning one fpr the breath.

Two important things left out here: 1. The karate chop narrows his frontal drag profile (given that the hand is below the shoulder). 2. Submerging the head eliminates surface drag during the fastest (most drag-intensive) phase of the left-arm pull.
@snowpants2212
@snowpants2212 3 жыл бұрын
@Tribune Maximus He's balancing drag-minimization with power: the left hand waits for the right one to catch up, then sweeps back very powerfully. During this most drag-intensive phase of his stroke, he minimizes drag by submerging his head and karate-chopping the right hand as he glides onto his right side. The rotation onto his right side after the breath adds power to the left arm pull (by giving him leverage through his core). But he doesn't have as much of a core power-assist during his right-arm pull (because he's not breathing to the left). So instead of letting the left hand catch up to the right one, he draws extra power by leveraging his head, raising it into the breath during the right-arm pull. This is a common hybrid/galloping stroke made popular by Phelps and others.

He makes it look like water ballet. Brilliant stroke. Nearly all amateurs don't access their hips/core, or a loose, but perfectly timed kick. This fellow has all the bits and pieces working like a Swiss gear.

I like watching his stroke. He and Florian Wellbrock are the two current elite long distance swimmers that I want to watch racing side by side. Their stroke are efficient : low rate of stroke, unlike Gregorio Paltrinieri, whose rate of stroke is very high for a tall guy like him.

Romancucks karate chop freestyle is actually an external rotation of his arm which to me is not for mainly emphasizing his catch of the water but more of a bone and articulation rhythm strategy that enables him to smoothly rotate and plunge his body, into a streamlining balanced body alignment, onto his chosen none breathing left body side and In turn amplifying his entire body sling range of motion on both sides of his body. Thus resulting in a more powerfully efficient full body integration stroke cycle. Romanchuck is actually using a Shoulder/Body driven and kick pattern used mostly by sprinters. His hand/ humerus bone rhythm affects his entire body so a key result is a faster more amplified shoulder body contra lateral Kick and arm stroke connection , somewhat similar to throwing a baseball or a Javeline. There is more to his freestyle than what catches the eye. His shoulder girdle bone rhythm is cueing his ribs and spine to rotate that extra bit more onto his left, none breathing , side. By doing this his left arm stroke gets invited into a continuous reciprocal full swing of motion. A thing of beauty.

I would say the chop he is doing helps him set up the catch up more efficiently.. the setup of the catch won’t move you forward at all. So it’s better the get to the catch with less energy as possible.. chopping is a smart and efficient way to do so..

I think it is all about balance: horizontal hand is used to compensate for bad balance and thus creates more drag.

Learning to swim the front crawl this past year, I've come to develop this 'karate chop' quite naturally and I agree - the reason it developed naturally was because it enabled me to feel my lats engage, whereas before I only felt my front delts. I'd never seen anyone do it before and did wonder if it was a mistake, but figured that it worked for me to engage my lats and learn a high(er) elbow catch, so I left it as is.
@hazenstowell8905

Swimming can be very taxing on your shoulders, that’s why it’s important to redistribute tension to your lats and forearms. You do this by having an early vertical forearm (“popping the elbow”), which engages both the forearm and the lats. Also reduces risk of shoulder injury. Glad to hear you were able to develop this technique naturally

I have a different hypothesis: his left hand has better efficiency prior to engaging the catch, and so the pull mechanic is more powerful. He doesn't do it on the right because in needs a glide breath.

What is interesting to me is that he does the opposite motion (to a lesser degree) of his left arm. His palm actually turns outward a little bit. This is his non-breathing side so I suspect he developed this to avoid crossing over. I have seen other good swimmers do this as well. Great analysis. Thanks.

Hi, thx a lot for this analysis:) i would just ad one thing, and everyone can actually try this on their own: in this vertical hand position his arm is locked absolutely streight. With horizontal palm one risks going a bit left or right.

Yes, Sun Yang too. They all do it with their breathing hand, which extends more deeply than the non-breathing hand and therefore presents a larger profile to the oncoming flow (imagine a palm-down hand looking like a ramp from head on). By turning the hand thumb-up, the ramp is replaced by a knife blade.

not sure but i think i do this naturally , or a version of it. I am a beginner swimmer and I have no idea how to video underwater. I made my first video from above the other day only to discover I didn't have enough room on the phone to save it. i may be getting in touch with you eventually as some coaching would really be helpful but for now I am just trying to improve stamina and experimenting around with stuff. Also I am a senior citizen with a shoulder replacement and two stints in my heart😁

He does not the same movement with the right hand and the left one. And I think that his thumb (right hand), at the beginning, should not be vertical but aligned with the other fingers: it makes drag! And I see that his hands positions, before the catch, make drag too. Right?

Who will win 1500m at Olympic next month ? Currently Florian Wellbrock has the best time : 14:36.45 from the last German trial this year. Romanchuk is 2nd with 14:39.89, followed by Paltrinieri. So I can see Wellbrock will take the gold, to complete his world title in 2019. But I want to see a thrilling race between Wellbrock and Romanchuk. I don't like watching a high rate of stroke displayed by Paltrinieri.

Whatever position you choose for your limbs that creates resultant force towards anywhere other than back of your body in a straight line will push or pull your body in a wrong direction plus unnecessary fluid disturbances which act more like a braking system. so just because this swimmer does this hand position and still is a fast swimmer doesnt mean its correct , obviously he has to work harder to compensate for that anyway.fluid mechanic engineer.

Karate chop? No. No. No. Look how Romanchuk's karate chop drives his head and upper torso underwater! He's getting a full body butterfly kick in twice every stroke. Open your eyes. We were all taught wrong. Don't swim with the water level at your eyebrows. Do it like Romanchuk and drive your head completely underwater, allowing the water to slide down your back. And then when you come up for a breath, clear that water off you back completely. Get it? That's a butterfly kick through the head and upper torso. Watch it again, and look for what I am saying.
