Swimming fast is a combination of fitness and technique, one is about physical hard work, the other more mental. We are going to be looking into the recovery part of the front crawl stroke and showing how you can improve this phase.

Now, because the recovery phase doesn’t actually propel us forward, it can also be easy to think that it doesn’t add anything to our stroke.
But in actual fact, it really does. It helps to:
- Stabilise and balance your stroke - almost like a counterweight.
- Add forward momentum to your stroke.
- Streamline your hand entry.
- Coordinate the timing of your stroke, including the timing of your breathing.
So, let’s take a look at how you should execute it...

Great camera work just at the surface - a good visual is so much easier to digest than technical instruction. Thanks for posting.

I never really put too much thought into the recovery part of my swim... I'll definitely be thinking more about it during my training over this summer!

The timing of all this has me completely hooked I want to know the best timing on the feet/legs, it might seem simple to good swimmers but I’ve taught myself and have managed to get the front crawl down well for about 1 year now and with every new technique I learn I get faster love it.

I do mine like semi circuit sweep still maintaining elbow above the wrist but the angle is wider than the typical high elbow. My hand is just near the surface of the water. I found this technique to be more relaxed and not squeezing my back muscle.

Interesting what you said about the leg stroke and speed, I find this a forgotten and difficult part, maybe some extra attention at our legs and feet?

I feel that for most (older) age groupers it is far more important to not tie their shoulders in a knot than trying to get a super slick recovery, haha Body rotation and balance should always be priority nr 1 I think Hell, even Brenton Ford from effortless swimming is using a more 'triathlon-y' recovery nowadays :d

When recovering, I can't keep the other arm in front up and steady, it starts falling. Any suggestions?

What do You guys think about Total Immersion swimming technique?
@cmillholland

TI emphasizes a glide at the front of the stroke, much like a catch-up drill. It looks beautiful, but is not efficient. If you aren’t putting pressure forward with a continuous pull, you’re going to slow down due to drag. That’s just physics. You’ll see pool-based long distance swimmers with a long gliding stroke. They compensate for drag by creating a very small shadow by stretching forward while the recovery arm moves forward. It helps to be tall and skinny with long limbs, and it takes years to develop into a strong swim. For the rest of us a continuous pulling action is more efficient. You still want to extend at the end of the recovery, but initiate the catch at the moment you’ve reached extension. Compare Sun Yang with Katie Ledecky.

There is no recovery. Does your other leg recover when you run? No! It’s leverage and propulsion 24/7
