Romanov Jewels: 1918

Fascinating; thank you for posting this. The answer to the whereabouts of the "missing" pieces can be found in and about Tobolsk. While under guard there, of course, their imprisonment was not especially harsh, and, at in the early days, it was possible for friends and supporters to gain access to the family. It was decided to divide the bulk of the jewels brought from Tsarskoe Selo into groups, which were then smuggled out of the Governor's mansion, and hidden in and around Tobolsk. Unfortunately, at the time of the transfer to Ekaterinburg, three women (one of them, the Baroness Buxhoeveden, a former lady-in-waiting to the Empress), in an effort to save themselves, betrayed the secret. A complete list of the recovered pieces - staggering in their opulence and value - can be found Greg King and Penny Wilson's book "The fate of the Romanovs": included among them were tiaras, necklaces, bracelets, pins, and brooches.

@@RadioWhoPoo Yes, and Gibbes - because of his presence on the scene - was also one of the first to question the veracity of Baroness Buxhoeveden (particularly her story of how she managed to survive, while her fellow prisoners the Baroness Hendrikova and Mlle. Schneider were executed).

The skull and cross bones pendant was likely made by Tillander a finish jeweller that had workshops in St Petersburg and was also a supplier to the Russian Court they also manufactured items that were sold through Faberge. It would most likely have belonged to the Empress as she was Colonel in Chief of the Death heads Hussars and the Skull and Crossbones was there emblem, it would have likely been a gift from the Hussars to the Empress.
