I'm afraid of him and impressed at the same time :) Thank you for the video, Brandon :3
@Uryvichk8 ай бұрын
I think he comes across as sincere, but so sincere that he's willing to twist scripture into knots because he desperately WANTS it to say what he's preaching that it says. I think he's terrified at the prospect that he's wrong, that God won't spare everyone who believes and trusts in Christ, that the Gentiles can't be saved and that most of Israel won't be either. Remember, he thinks he's on the clock, and that God's wrath is coming soon.

@@Uryvichk Yes, Brandon praises his logic, but that logic contradicts what he is trying to spread and he's trying to reshape everything constantly. Its hard to tell if he was malicious, or just mentally ill. He speaks of a sin he cannot stop...did it damn him by Jewish Law? Is that why he turned against it, to the idea that Jesus was a new version of that, one that would forgive him his sin? @@Cuffsmaster I think Baptism has to do with the superstitious belief in the 4 elemental forces: water, wind, earth and fire. Notice that in Genesis God hovers over the chaos waters to calm it such act denoting his "power" over that element and this act also replayed to a smaller extent when Jesus supposedly walked (not quite hovering but close enough) on water. Air (wind/windy - stirrings of the spirit world) was viewed as the spirit world wherein both the goodies the invisible angels and baddies invisible demons resided. Earth (mud, dirt, clay, soil) had magic powers too since that was the stuff that God used to create Adam (Eve only got the rib end of it). And then we get into the rather gory blood-magic. I once heard a Christian exclaim using a rather serious tone of voice that: you must be covered from head to toe in the "blood of the lamb" to be absolved/shielded from your sins (there just isn't enough blood in pigeon blood to do the job, also city ordinances probably wouldn't allow you to own a scape goat and just let it roam around the country side...so no luck there either). All of that is so cringe. I mean why not a better God and Religion? A religion that has something to do with brains, entropy, immortality. At least then no one would have to communally LARP out all this b.s. nonsense.
@meowmix4jo7 ай бұрын
@@Cuffsmaster Peter and Jesus both say you need to be baptized and there's quite a bit on water cleansing in the OT. Jesus says in Mark (which notably has the thief mocking Jesus instead of being saved which would contradict this but aligns with Paul's teachings) 16:16 that you have to believe and be baptized. The idea that you don't have to be comes mostly from Paul, which like this video said is true for a ridiculous amount Christian doctrine which often contradicts what Jesus or people who supposedly actually knew him said (like, idk... his brother, who is supposedly the one that said faith without works is dead). Totally clears things up right?

Very solid and comprehensive video. I would argue beyond Calvinism; why would anyone who’s Christian have kids, if they really believe that they could possibly go to eternal torment in hell forever? You can’t control the decisions of your kids in adulthood, and it would be the parent’s fault for bringing them into this world. Even Ecclesiastes 4 says that the one who was never born is better off than everyone bc they never had to “witness the evil under the sun”. On top of that, in 1 Corinthians 7, Paul clearly promotes singleness and childlessness over the alternative. What’s the real greater good for Christians? To have a family that they risk going to hell forever or to give their lives fully to the ministry if they really believe it? Even when I was Christian, this was one of the things that caused me to believe that most people who proclaimed Christ didn’t actually believe the biblical narrative

Awesome video. Romans 9 has a special place in my deconversion story, because it was what I was reading when seeking answers to the question, “why can I not embrace this idea of substitutional atonement?” My blood still curdles at the thought that the torture, suffering, and death of the innocent Jesus somehow balanced the scales of justice to exonerate my guilt and justify me in spite of my sinfulness. When I read this chapter while so struggling, it occurred to me that my heart was hardened against this very idea, and that this was an indication that - assuming Romans was true - God had plans for me that didn’t include mercy. Or, that this was all a lie and this particular God didn’t exist… Later I found that Ezekiel 18 thoroughly refutes the idea of substitutional atonement and original sin, as well as forgiveness via sacrifice of the innocent vs simple repentance. I’m not sure how anyone can read Romans, believe it to be true, and not wind up adopting Calvinism or something very similar.

So this is where the Calvinist doctrine of predestination comes from. I always had a major beef with that sort of thinking, especially in light of how Christians still go out and proselytize, knowing that there's a good chance most of these people are already slated for torment. And who's to say any of the predestined are even all Christians? What if many of them ascribed to other belief systems or never heard of Jesus before or are non-believers altogether? I also know Romans is where the verse about all having knowledge and belief in their hearts but choose to disbelief because of their unrighteousness comes from. What an utter crock. I can never forgive John Calvin for his dangerous interpretation of this book, nor Paul for putting it out there in the first place. This is the part of the Bible that I have been the least familiar with, so I truly appreciate the depth that you are exploring each book. I'm thankful more and more that I didn't get sucked into such a deeply harmful belief system.

Great episode! You said at the start that Paul was logical but I think ‘pseudo-logical’ would be much more accurate. He contradicts himself so much even inside the same book, starts arguments but then quickly shuts them down to go onto the next one. He gives a superficial impression of rationality with not much under the facade. Perhaps what Socrates meant by calling people Sophists - all bluster and rhetoric, farting in the wind.

This book reminds me of someone who keeps saying, "You're not listening to me." while interrupting you every other word. How can the people who wrote the text not understand and need clarification?
@tobymartin21378 ай бұрын
"Who are you to argue back to God?" Paul asks, apparently deciding to abandon yet another tradition within the Hebrew Bible of people trying to do just that - Abraham, Moses, Gideon, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, all tried, to certain extents, to bargain with this prickly God, and could succeed to some degree. But with this, I feel Paul has succeeded in making the NT God the more distant, cold, and remote one. Obviously it's a later letter, but it seems to be no exaggeration to say that Romans is one of the foundational codifications on Christian doctrine. Paul may have been the only Christian theologian to never read the Gospels, but it's perfectly possible his influence shaped what the Gospels became.

Been looking forward to Romans since you started this series! A collection of all of your work must be preserved for all future generations, it is the benchmark by which God and Christ and the Bible are judged and are found wanting. Your analytical work honestly and accurately shows clearly that God is NOT a perfect character or a perfect thinker, your analysis clearly shows that beyond any doubt. Excellent video, Brandon. I have been saying for a long time that one of the main reasons why there is so much disagreement today between Calvinists, Arminians, Molinists, Open Theists, Annihilationists, Universalists, Infernalists etc…. is because there is so much contradiction going on in the text by the authors of the text. Each Christian Group just cherry picks what Scriptures they like and tries to symbolise the Scriptures they don’t like or say that the Scriptures they don’t like don’t really mean what they say.

Romans 9 was the start of my deconstruction… the white rabbit in my matrix. This all powerful and all loving God creates vessels for honor and for dishonor. He actively hardens people’s hearts so he’ll be able to show his wrath, justice, etc. In other words, God WANTED the dark backdrop of sin and suffering in order for the glory of the gospel and beauty of Christ to shine forth more brightly. There is A LOT of collateral damage in that model… and the insiders telling me what a wonderful god he is while dismissing the mountain of evidence against that as a “mystery” where compatibilism or free will somehow make those unbelievers responsible. I talked to hundreds of my fellow Christians and none of them could explain it away without contorting what the text actually says. It took years of questioning/listening/reading until it was just so obvious to me that the answer is that this Bible is not the perfect consistent inspired word of god I had believed it to be from childhood due to the family I was raised in. And then… the floodgates of all the other problems were opened.

And all this on the back of the most tenuous of explanations. It seems to me very much like a power-grab by an egotistical former Tax Collector with ideas of grandeur and his own nefarious motives. Yet, people listen to this person, thereby casting Jesus into a lower ranking on the authority scale. The new Hierarchy has become; God, Paul, Jesus and a Ghost. @heavenbound7-7-7-7 Visions are often used as an after math justification for a person doing what they want to do anyways. Especially back in that day when proclaimed visions were so frequently used to influence others. Or, if a person has a change in motivation or desire for any various reason, their subconscious is more likely to provide them with a vision, dream, or intense feeling supporting their new desire. In both these hypotheticals, the change in desire occurs first, and then the vision.

Hey Brandon. Amazing video. You did a great job with this Romans overview. It actually gave a bit of a new insight that helped with a question that's been bugging. I was wondering if you could do a side video or companion video to this section as you're going through Paul's epistle's about how they might have been assembled. That is if you have an understanding you feel like sharing. Since I started looking critically at all these texts and trying to put them in there historical context and timeline, one of the things that's bugged me is why or how we even have Paul's letters at all. It's obvious how a Gospel like Mark would had been shared but presumably a letter written to one group wasn't sent to all of them. So at what point did these letters start being gathered, copied, grouped together and used as authoritative texts? How would anyone even know to do that or where to get them? Then you contrast that with Gospels that contradict Paul's letters that were written AFTER his letters the picture of that time is very confusing as to how his particular views became the predominant theology and worth being collected. Anyway it's a very interesting point that I don't ever hear anyone else touch on and I'd love to hear your thoughts about it.
