Princess Marie-Elisabeth of Saxon-Meigningen was the only daughter of the Duke Georg of Meiningen and Princess Charlotte of Prussia. both of her parents were dutiful patrons of the arts, supporting numerous musicians, one of whom was Johannes Brahms. Marie-Elisabeth studied piano under Brahms for many years, becoming highly influenced by his instruction and his compositional style.
Marie-Elisabeth went on to compose works for solo piano, violin, and eventually for clarinet. A lyrical, lesser- known work of the Romantic era, Romanze for Clarinet and Piano is dedicated to Richard Mülfeld, for whom Brahms wrote both his clarinet sonatas. A lifelong lover of music and patron of young musicians, Marie-Elisabeth is one of many women composers recieving her due recognition long after her time.
