@@kikeara the bedroom scene especially tidying the bed is an unconscious reaction. It is a normal behaviour it is something she has done as a wife and homemaker hundreds of times and it is an anchor behaviour when her life has just hit a wild storm with the realization of the dishonesty of her husband the bare faced cheerfulness he shows when she opens her Joni Mitchell dvd. She is devastated and the floor has given way beneath her. Right is left up is down. She is astounding cos her love for her children compels her to put on the. brave face.The husband is incomprehensible. How long would the deceit have continued. She was so brave to challenge him and burst his bubble and make him wake up and she did it magnificently after the children’s show.Her voice breaks as she tells him in the ‘what would you do?’ Statements and she lays it on how he made her life and her foolish. Perfect he is left squirming exposed for what he is with guilt She then pours out her love to her children greeting them in Princess Diana style with outstretched open arms and takes them home to treats and he follows like a sheep. I wonder what their conversation was like when they were alone. Did the secretary leave her job? It was later decided by the scriptwriters that it wasn’t a full an affair but a flirtation but that is dishonest and a betrayal of love and marital attention his wife deserved.

God her last line really hits home. That's what makes cheating so awful. To the person who was cheated on, the one who stayed loyal and loving, it really does feel like their whole life became a sham. Especially when they're kids involved and you have to now make a choice knowing that it'll impact everyone around you. If you stay, you will be permanently unhappy. If you leave, you will have taken the home from the kids, as the divorce always leaves you with less and now kids have two unhappy homes to go to. How awful. It's one thing to cheat on a young, unattached person who will have the chance to meet someone new and likely better, but doing it to your life partner who gave you their youth and kids, who spent all their lives by your side just to shatter it all for lust? How unforgivable.

Her problem (Emma Thompson and her character) was that she looked and dressed like a 65 year old grandma, when she was actually in her early 40s in this storyline (and her actual age at the time). Many people in early 40s still dressed and looked very attractive and young. Both in western and asian nations.

@@Mav86asian So? Is that a reason for him to cheat? Adultery is adultery. There is no justification for it, even if your wife or husband look terrible. It is not difficult to talk to each other before it goes so far. The problem is in the heart of the one cheating. People change, they not always look good, sometimes they let themselves go, they get sick or do not take care of themselves. This is part of life. What are you gonna do then? Find another model? the bedroom describes their relationship, dull, browned off, small bed, old fashioned wood furniture, handed down Loyd Loom chair, Sainsbury plastic bag in the corner, clothes on hangers not in their ‘right’ place, headboard with its back to the window (light, illumination!) completely flat bed, neat, undisturbed, her awful frumpy clothes. This is such a clever scene no wonder it is shown regularly, a masterclass of symbolism in visual clues. Joni Mitchell’s plaintive lament for her lost innocence is hammering this home. Emma Thompson’s portrayal of Karen’s epiphany, quiet muted distress, the pathos of the scene, a superlative performance, still moving today.

Just to clarify- the scenario is proposed from the viewpoint of the single person and *not* the one already in a relationship.
@cloud__9911 ай бұрын
I wouldn’t make it depend on the children tbh. The only situation I can ever see it being okay is if the person is obviously unhappy or the relationship is broken down. But at that point you might as well just separate because the kids can usually tell anyway that something is wrong. It’s not nice to live in a home with unhappy parents. Otherwise if you’re interested or you can tell the other person is interested I think it’s okay to express that but with the clear understanding that nothing further happens until the other relationship has ended. And Mia is just next level creepy homewrecker lol.

No, there is no situation where it isn’t wrong. Not one single situation. If it’s a bad relationship then the person needs to leave their spouse before pursuing others. Please don’t start thinking there is ever a time where this could be justified because that’s an unjustifiable rabbit hole.
