So Hawking proposed that black holes would emit subatomic particles until they eventually exploded??? HMM???

Not so much emit, more so mass is caried away by the small chance that a partical and anti particle pair (called virtual particles) appear on the event horizon of a black hole, where the antiparticle falls into the black hole effectively removing a near insignificant amount of mass, while the other particle escapes into the universe, making it seam as the blackhole radiated away some of its mass. Someone correct me if im wrong on all of this as i feel like i did...
