Tried darthmod, total trash really. Siege battles were a mess, the AI would line up like it was some ordinary line battle through the fort and out of it, it made no sense at all. If one of the "best" mods for empire is that bad, I don't even wanna guess how bad vanilla empire is.

I didn't get into it that much until the Kingdoms expansion. Now THESE are expansions worth to pay for, not cut content DLC's. Added variety in units and factions that I felt was lacking in the base game, and the athmosphere was just absolutely amazing. I think the Teutonic one was my favourite, but that could be because I'm a Pole (the kind that steals cars).

+dylan abrahams Which is less games fault and more of players fault... Surprise, when you use glitch to place tons of troops on exact same coordinates and then activate physics, the physics separates the troops from each others, who then try to return to their designated spots, but since you put more than 1 guy on the same spot, they can't!
@sapiensordinis8587
@sapiensordinis8587 8 жыл бұрын
+Mandemon1990 You're wrong (but also a bit right in that no normal player would place units on top of other units, although I think this was to demonstrate the lack of unit collision), in Rome 1 if you did the exact same thing the unit collision would prevent the units from clipping into each other in first place; Rome 1 is without a doubt technically superior in this respect. In Rome 1 you could position a unit 'on top' of siege equipment, trees and other units, but because of unit collision the units wouldn't glitch into anything. They would be unable to clip into them and would opt to get as close to their designated spots as possible before stopping, accepting obstacles as being in their formation. This system of unit collision allowed players to maneuver units through siege equipment, position units in dense forests, and move units through each other without breaking the immersion from seeing them glitching out whenever they collide with things, unlike in Rome 2.
@Mandemon1990
@Mandemon1990 8 жыл бұрын
Sapiens Ordinis Except, as you can see, moment the physics enter the play units are pushed out of hteir positions, attempt to move into their correct positions, notice it's filled, stop... and get pushed away more and more as physics try to fix the situation, causing unit to notice they are WAY out of formation and attempt to fix it... Rome 1 had same issues, especially early on. You can still cause the same glitch happen if you are persistent enough.
@sapiensordinis8587
@sapiensordinis8587 8 жыл бұрын
+Mandemon1990 What is apparent to me is that you largely missed the point of my comment; the point was that Rome 1 fixed this issue (units clipping into each other) by simply implementing unit collision, whereas Rome 2 didn't. Sure, Rome 1's unit collision is imperfect and, as you said, "You can still cause the same glitch happen if you are persistent enough", In Rome 1 I can take 20 units, 240 men each, and flood a single enemy unit and watch as the thousands of troops glitch into each other, but what you should notice is that the units are not gliding into then out of each other all the time, it only happens when you're "persistent enough". (BTW, I have no clue what "especially early on" means; you gave no context.) In my experience, your complaints of Rome 1 also having some of Rome2's issues are completely false. In Rome 1, (using 20 units, 240 men each) I can't place two units directly on top of each other in pre-battle deployment, although I can overlap the units very tightly together (so they push each other out of formation). However, contrary to your claim, when I clicked 'start battle' the units stayed in exactly the same spots that I had 'deployed' them in; no pushing; no reshuffling; only acceptance of their disorganized formations. Why? Because the pre-battle deployment takes unit collision into account. Rome 2 doesn't do this because Rome 2 doesn't have unit collision. See a recurring theme yet? Rome 2's issue of units clipping into each other stem from the fact that Rome 2 doesn't have unit collision, which makes you wrong with regards to your first comment: "Which is less games fault and more of players fault"; it IS the game's fault, or more accurately, the Warscape engine's fault. You are also partially wrong when you said "and more of players fault", yes, players would normally accept non-game-breaking glitches and just move on. Players can, and should, tolerate some moderate steps backwards in terms of sequels, however when a sequel takes a titanic leap backwards to the point of alienating the original material and your 'veteran' players, it should come as no surprise that fans makes the justified move to highlight the boneheaded and careless decisions made by the developers.

We need you back Dr. Sane! With _Rome Remastered_ getting a mixed reception, it would be interesting to hear your two cents on the matter. With the amount of negative backlash for the Remaster, I decided to finally reinstall _Rome II_ 4 years after I last played it. Since the "Warscape gang" are making lofty assertions that _Rome II_ is simply the better game in 2021, I even installed the vaunted Divide et Impera mod as well. The DEI mod sort of mitigated the problem of cavalry charges by increasing the morale shock received by units if they're attacked at the flanks and/or rear. But not even DEI version 1.2.7 managed to completely fix the lack of mass, poor unit collision, the 1 v 1 killmoves, etc. Your critique on the battles still hold true as of this writing in vanilla _Rome II_ I'm afraid.

nailed it yet again. this time it is even worse - even more damning, even more poignant and profound; this time, valid criticism (all of your criticism) does not have the mitigator of possibly being made obsolete or irrelevant via patches and updates. "emperor edition" is the final iteration. the problems the game has today, have been there for a fucking year. everything true about the game now, will always be true. this video needs no update/sequel. you could make this video 10 years from now and it would be identical. i also returned to the game on the anniversary - after nearly a year of not touching it at all, period. everything you said resonates with me. the point about cavalry most visibly and painfully highlighting the problems with warscape - 100% agree. the point about the apocalyptic theme that is being used to market attila *also having been used* to market rome 2 (lmao what?!?!) - damn fucking right, 100% agree and would perhaps milk even further. so ridiculous it could not possibly be pointed out enough. it dumbfounds how much of the playerbase (remaining playerbase) not only has not apparently noticed that, but also has not taken wind of the legacy of downright fraud and deception, and are still managing to feel "hyped" about this game. the people that still manage to _care_ about the future of total war are just fucking retarded or are kidding themselves, they are hearkening back to a nostalgic time when they played rome 1, or are afflicted with some kind of childhood attachment syndrome or some other mental disorder. still giving more than even half of a fuck about the future of the total war series is almost always comorbid with being gullible and stupid as hell (i have experienced this first hand), or some other weird shit that i cannot even fucking begin to understand. i simply do not care one iota for attila at this point, the only difference between me and the average TW fan since rome 1 or earlier, is that i am still here in this discussion (mostly involuntarily) and they have probably moved on with their fucking lives. for me, nothing CA does from here on (post FOTS) is "real". the CA that made rome 1 and medieval 2 and shogun 2.. is fucking obviously dead. the corporate shadow that has necessarily been hanging over total war since its inception, and has been steadily strangling the franchise, has completely replaced and destroyed the _soul_ and essence of total war. the total war name is now just a hijacked vestige for what has become a churned out, pimped (whored) out piece of corporatised, commercialised garbage. once the nostalgia and romanticising finishes hemorrhaging out of the playerbase (even the dumbest of the dumb manage to learn), maybe the series can finally just fuck off and die. let someone else that knows (or remembers) how to make a good game take over. if attila is worthy of the total war name as determined by fans of the series that actually know a good total war game when they play one, it will almost certainly be a fluke. there isnt a single person around here that doesnt have something better to do than be duped by even more shitty trailers. if you want to jerk yourself off, use porn. every trailer that can be jerked off to is another £50,000 that doesnt go towards the actual fucking game. until "attila is actually an amazing game!" is being screamed from every rooftop, nobody in their right mind should give a single fuck about it and is adding to the cancer by doing so. P.S. nice cat. i am also a cat person and my cat is also black and white. he even has white paws like yours.. holy shit.

Well , you can only lie once and get away with it, lets see how Attila sells ? They'll have to pull out M3TW to attract the punters back but how burnt are those punters ? We should all write to SEGA in Japan and complain about the antics of Rome2 release.
@EveofConflict

backreefoil Im sorry, but I really have to say that this is NOT SEGA's fault anymore. Originally I thought they had a big part to play, but then I re-watch the Rally Points, and witness the outright misleading and lies done by CA. The flaunting of a larger budget that SEGA obviously approved, and CA apparently dumped it into their marketing department. This is, in my humble opinion, all on CA at this point. Now do I think SEGA cares if CA burns itself to the ground? Yes, and their budget is likely going to get slashed since they've proven themselves to be an unreliable pile of dung heap making their signature title. But hey, they can sure make a horror game!.......bastards.

Yeah it is, the graphical engine is called Warscape which is built into TW3, it's a real common misconception. Total War is the name of the engine, and it's on it's 3rd iteration. Europa Barbarorum I and II provide the best battles of any TW-based game I've yet played. The units have mass, the battles are slowed down so you can actually employ tactics and grand tactics, the AI is smart enough to do things like flank you and try to charge its cavalry into your rear, disengage its units so they can hit other, weaker parts of your line and even withdraw its army before it is entirely destroyed if it calculates the odds of victory are close to nil. There are only some minor bugs that result in glitchyness that still need to be ironed out, but really, all CA really needs to do is fix them and they'll have an excellent battle engine. Almost all the work has already been done for them. A Rome II with a modestly upgraded Europa Barbarorum battle engine would have made an outstanding game.

You wanna know what the whole Rome series in TW feels like to me? I imagine Rome 1 as a Happy Meal at McDonalds. You get a burger, some fries and a drink. It’s great! You get everything you need in a meal, plus sides to polish off the main burger. But it’s true, the original meal gets a bit old, and maybe eating the same meal gets old after a while. So CA releases a new version of the Happy Meal. Except the meal is missing the Big Mac. But look! The drink is twice the size! … so after massive protests from their fan base, CA finally decides to release a third, “fixed” version. They’ve kinda learned their lesson, and put the burger back. Except it’s a cheeseburger, not a Big Mac. Also, the cheeseburger is missing the cheese. Goddamnit. But look! They've tripled the size of the drink! And added a smoothie! You really don't get it, do you CA?

I quite liked Attila, until one day I just grew tired of battle after battle after battle. It's just a series of battles, without the city management like in Rome and Medieval 2. I started with Rome 2, when playing Medieval 2 I noticed how I consciously specialised each of my settlements and how I really treasured my units since they wouldn't just magically regenerate. Now I've only got Rome and Medieval II installed.

Rome 1's music was so inspiring it brought ancient history to life it excited more than just gamers. Many historians were inspired too and one example is the decisive battles series. Its not just the creator of the series that might have been inspired if you think about it, if all the historians that participated in its making weren't also interested, then they wouldn't have taken part

Many of the points in this video are...well, subjective, IMO. I see where you're coming from with the mo-cap kill animations, the way the units collide in a clunky manner, etc., but I've found some of those things to be the high points, not the lows. The kill animations are fucking wicked (decapitations, shoving swords in stomachs and watching the blood and agony of the enemy, dismemberment! Fuck yeah!) when I look at them, and I've done plenty of acting myself. You say they hit each others' shields and swords like they're five year olds, seemingly attacking them instead of going for one's weak-points or actual body, but sword and board combat was very much like that. They'd smack their shields together, they'd clash swords, they'd get seemingly nowhere until an opportunity presented itself, then they went for the kill with even more tenacity. Fighting like that was long, arduous, and almost pointless to some. It was about tiring out your enemy, and the more you could hit their shield or take their hits meant you could last much longer, and thus present less opportunities to be killed or wounded, but open them up to more. Also, once you killed enough of their men (which was honestly a small percentage), they would route in a panic, and most of the quick slaughter would occur there. Much of the combat was not singular units pitted against one another. The Barbarians fought like that, but the Greeks, Romans, Punic Cultures- they fought in formations as units, and thus functioned like machines moving as one mass rather than a rabble of men waiting to go toe-to-toe with other soldiers. The Greek Phalanx, the Roman Maniple and Cohort systems, the Samnite Camillian(The spelling could be wrong) are great examples of this. So, with that in mind, I find much of it rather realistic (except when they stab their sword straight through the Lorica Segmentata of my legionaries, I mean, c'mon!). Granted, the killing should be less dramatic, as they'd go for quick stabs to the stomach under the armor in most cases, but I overlook that detail for the sake of gameplay. The overhaul mod I use (Divide Et Impera) improves these aspects and makes the combat slower, but the groundwork was laid by the developers. With my love for the combat in that respect, I overlook the clipping of units and the clunkiness of the cavalry, as every game has its quirks, and you have to invoke your imagination to fill the blanks. I also find the charges to be rather satisfying, though the units all stopping at once is rather stiff. The patches, combined with the mods, my personal love for the combat, and the vast variety of factions and cultures, makes me love this game. I'm getting closer to 500 hours on the game (for me, it's a lot). I've loved most of the Total War releases, or in the very least understood why they were good but didn't get too invested with the theme. Overall, I got my return on investment, as I was one of those idiots who pre-ordered it. Am I comfortable with the vast amount of DLC coming out for the game? Yes when it comes to campaigns, as they're not really important in the grand scheme of the core game, but no when it comes to the factions, as they should be included in the base. I've been able to overlook many of the faults of this game, or simply get over them (saying "Get over it" is not effective in place of an argument, and I roll my eyes at Rome II defenders whenever they say it). It took a while for the game to get good, but it did IMO, and I'm loving every moment of the game (Well, not really. I get annoyed plenty with the game at times, but no more than I do with other titles). I see as to why you're still embittered by the game, and I see your points; they're valid and well articulated, so I really liked the video. What really told me that your video was effective was when it encouraged me to write this dissenting, lengthy comment, because you did a proper job in presenting your points; it opened the door for discussion, rather than a door for ranting on misrepresentation...but you did cherry pick some of those clips when comparing the combat, honestly. The Battle of Teutoberg forest was heart-pounding for me, even if everyone wasn't getting annihilated in seconds. But I digress. Good on ya for making this, as Rome II shouldn't get too much slack for the shit it pulled, but I personally feel that the game is worth it when the game isn't $60.00 for most people. I think I've gotten my full price though with 500 hours of playtime.

Huh, "The More You Know". Never would've thought the Gauls fought in that style. So, was it the Germans that fought more individualistically then? I swear that it was some group of barbarians, maybe not as broad as I implied, but I know some in particular did so. Also, the Romans were indeed in looser formations, but they were still fighting as a single unit; they may have personal defense, but the man to their sides could always aid in a fight and return to the foe they were focused on. They trained as a unit, they fought as a unit.

Tiny Tim All armies train as units. Its inefficient to do otherwise.
@lxHowlxl
@lxHowlxl 9 жыл бұрын
That would be the presumption, yes, but plenty of barbarian tribes and most of the armies in the middle ages weren't nearly as organized. Often units would look a rabble of varied armor and weapons, they wouldn't have the discipline to hold and utilize the formations and tactics the Romans had. While it's true soldiers will personalize their loadouts no matter how organized a military is, there wasn't the same uniformity for most armies save those of post-Marian Rome, Alexander's Pike phalanxes, etc. The strength of the formation was not necessarily the individual skill of the soldiers (that certainly helped), but the ability to hold the formation and to rely on one another won the day more than someone's fine skills with swordsmanship. Less organized forces have less cohesiveness, and thus rely more on the individual strength of its soldiers. They didn't go into battle alone, but they didn't all operate as efficiently. So, perhaps the question isn't if an army did or did not train as units. There were times that groups would be assembled that were simply a loose collection of soldiers that couldn't do much beyond simple orders, but they still fought as a unit. The question, I think, would be the integrity of the unit's cohesion and coordination. In terms of discipline, did anyone have much on the Romans in that respect? I can only think of the Greek city states and the Carthaginians.

Obviously, spears hiting shields sounds less "cooler" and less Holywood style. Next you have shown hoplite shields hit by sling STONES. It has to sound real NOT LIKE IN HOLYWOOD.
