I dont understand why you play ambush battles like a 'normal' battle it works better to deploy your units on both sides of the column they break easier and your loses are lower

The main advantage of ambushing is -20% morale penalty to enemy for being ambushed (and potential additional -20% if they're also in forced march). The ability to deploy close and on both sides is nice but sometimes not worth it - it makes ballistae useless while deploying far away allows them to score a few hundred kills before enemy closes in. So it's a trade off - sometimes is better to deploy close and charge, sometimes farther away and bombard
