Rome Campaign - 1: "For the Republic!" | Imperator: Rome [Terra Indomita]

Hey there folks, and welcome to the premier episode of the Rome Campaign!
This will be a long-form let's play of the 2019 grand strategy PC game Imperator: Rome, including all DLC and on Patch 2.04. New episodes of the Rome Campaign will be released irregularly, and each will be of whatever length ends up feeling right for that recording session. This campaign features a number of mods and gameplay changes:
1) "Terra-Indomita" - Compiles and merges several overhaul mods together, including "To the End of the World," "Imperator: Invictus," "Full Mechanical Overhaul," and "Better UI 2.0."
* "To the End of the World" - This translated Chinese mod adds Asia to the Imperator: Rome map and introduces many new mechanics for Chinese nations related to the collapse of Imperial authority.
* "Imperator: Invictus" - This popular overhaul mod rebalances almost everything in Imperator: Rome, generally resulting in a deeper, more thoughtful, and slower-paced grand strategy experience.
* "Full Mechanical Overhaul" - Overhauls several systems, including buildings and stances, and adds several systems such as a character focus mechanic similar to Crusader Kings III.
* "Better UI 2.0" - Reorganizes the user interface for greatly improved readability.
2) "Terra Europea - Terra Indomita Sub-Mod" - Adds additional mission trees to European tags, including 5 new mid and late-game trees for Rome.
2) "Terra Indomita - Extended Peace deal Mechanic" - Adds an alternative peace deal option that allows for sums of gold, war reparations, and forced destabilization to be requested using war score.
3) "Korean Flavor Pack for Terra-Indomita" - Adds historical cosmetics to Korean characters.
5) "Virtual Limes" - Improves the AI's ability to expand along natural borders, avoid border-gore, and establish buffer state vassals where sensible.
6) "No Minimum Levy Size" - Removes the minimum levy every owned region spawns (2,000 men in the vanilla game) so every country on the map must rely on their actual integrated cultural population to accurately provide all of their levy manpower.
7) "Music Player+" - Adds over 100+ new music tracks from games, shows, and movies with an appropriate ancient age sound for greatly improved music diversity.
8) Misc. Code Changes - I've recoded several sections of "Terra-Indomita" to make the gameplay of the Yan Campaign fit my preferences (the last two changes are more experimental):
- The start date has been shifted to January 1st, 450 (from October 1st, 450).
- All preexisting roads on the map have been removed.
- All preexisting Holy Sites on the map have been removed.
- Cohort sizes have been increased from 250 men to 500 men.

The Trait System in TI is secretly broken for Rome (and republics in general). Every 4 years your newly elected consul can pick the zeal tree, opting a couple years later for the free province investment. You know where i'm going; You essentially get 1 free inv every 4 years, which naturaly you should spend it on your capital trade routes. That's at least +25 trade routes in the first 100 years ingame, or 12 new nationwide trade related buffs. I reached 100 trade routes in Rome by 100 BC, after which i just invested in Building Slots, making Latium generate 1000 Research Points by 50 BC. And you thought Rome was already OP, lol!

Holy crap, that IS broken! In my future republic campaigns I'll see if I can implement that as a strategy until the TI team updates the mod to fix that (if they even can) - I wouldn't have normally thought to focus the consul on zeal since I normally prioritize election meddling until I got a high martial/finesse consul w a high zeal co-consul if possible (for Rome at least), but 1 free investment every 5 years is definitely worth missing out on +1 to martial or finesse.

@@Misadventurer I went an hour ago to inform the TI team of the exploit so they could (sadly) fix it. Yet they don't even take comments on their lab page. Anyways I too thought Finesse was King, and for a good reason. I then figured that high Zeal actually helps you a ton with stability when you're high on A.E. as i had gone hard on A.E. as Rome when Pyhrrus was elected Consul (don't ask...). I wondered if the Zeal trait tree could offer me an incentive, and boy was I incentivised!

​@@Misadventurer He has "Ambitious", "Blood of Aiakos", "Shrewd" and "Prominent". That's +70 Prominence and +20 Senate Influence, of course he was elected!😂 I check closely and he was a member of the Populares; Yes, the only faction in Rome who's member you can make a Dictator. I Princeps Civitatis'ed the s*** out of the man. I didn't see a "free province investment" for 30 years cause the 13 Martial CHAD/Siege expert was leading my levies to glory.

Three quick questions: 1) Isn't it always better to Promote Infrastructure Spending in Latium (forts aside)? Since trade routes are increased by populations, isn't it always better to improve population capacity? 2) Why didn't you build an academy? Isn't it better from almost any point of view (research points, trade routes, and so on)? 3) Why did you demote cities? Really great content by the way, big fan here

Thank you! 1) IMO, the number of new pops needed per new trade route is too high in the early game for getting enough trade routes for all the surplus modifiers you're going to want fast enough. The trade routes from population mechanic becomes more helpful in the late game when your population growth is much higher from accumulated modifiers. 2) Academies are good for those things, but early on I prioritize pop desired ratio modifiers (in the case of Latium's cities, noble and citizen desired ratio buildings) since additional pops are always more valuable output wise then incremental output bonuses to the existing pops until you're talking about modifying very large populations of nobles/citizens, such as in the late game. I think in an early episode after this one I talked about this idea more as well. 3) It's partially a bad habit of mine, partially a min-max approach. I am extremely picky about cities being in the 'right' tiles (usually, tiles with population capacity boosting modifiers like being farmland/floodplain/oasis, on minor and/or major rives, being coastal, ect...).

Kudos on attempting the Classical Latin pronunciations. I became a bit fan of doing that after playing Expeditions: Rome, where all the voice actors used it for every Latin word.

Very excite. I love Stellaris but Ho4 ck2 never really hooked me. I think you’ll fix that barrier for me.

After playing this myself it turns out that you can actually bribe the augur... but only if they aren't devout, pious or righteous which makes sense. It doesn't actually guarantee getting a good auspice though.

That navy glitch is so on brand for early Rome, haha. By the way, if viewers want to know more about (real) Roman history, I would highly recommend listening between two Misadventurer videos to "The History of Rome" podcast, by Mike Duncan. It covers the whole period from the Roman kingdom to the fall of the western Roman Empire. It's a bit old (2007) but you will find it easily. If you're able to read French, you can also look for "Histoire de la Rome Antique" by Jerphagnon :)

Around 2:41:00, you mention how there really should be a gold payment to fix the event of the auspices, and there actually normally is one, but I think the woman you assigned to the Augur job didn't have any corruption trait like the default guy does, so there was no option for it.

Yep! I'm pretty sure some of the mods I'm using require all DLCs to work correctly. Plus, the few DLCs Paradox made before abandoning I:R are all relevant for a Hellenic playthrough like Rome.
