Landed in Rome today..guys grabbed us leaving terminal. Started walking us away from taxi line. Because I’d watched this video last week, I asked if he was a white taxi. No he was a black taxi. I asked cost and he replied meter. I said no thanks and went to white taxi line. My adult son was so impressed!, thank you!

Asking if a driver has a white taxi won’t help you. Many scam drivers have white taxis. You need to look at the doors for the City of Rome logo. A scam white taxi will not have the City of Rome logo on the door.

And hailing a taxi on the street is a good way to attract a scam white taxi. You must always check the door for the City of Rome logo. I agree itTaxi is the best taxi APP IN Rome.

The absolute best guard against being overcharged is Elyssa’s tip on using the taximeter estimator BEFORE you APP for the cab. These are actually very accurate for Rome. Just type in your location and destination and any other prompts and you will know the cost of your trip. Stick to that value if you’re overcharged and pay only that amount. It helps to have small bills and change on you when using Rome cabs. I’ve lived in Rome for 7 years and I just recently had to rely on the taximeter to get myself out of an overcharge. I did it and you can do it too. It works like a charm. Knowledge is your friend.

At the Taxi Stand in front of St. Peter's Basilica the cab driver wanted 30 Euros to take us to the Mausoleum of Augustus. It's only a 10 minute walk but we were exhausted from touring the Vatican Museums and St. Peter's all morning. Shouldn't have cost more than 10 or 12 Euro but we probably would have paid up to 20. He was quite rude about it so we declined. None of the other cabbies would even deal with us because he was the 1st one in the queue. They were all standing around talking and smoking and obviously didn't want to work. We wound up walking and so glad we did because we got to experience the beautiful views along the Tiber and the Ponte Sant'Angelo. We took taxis all over Rome and Florence and this was the one and only time we had an issue.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I'm sorry you had such as hard time with the taxi drivers. This is what I mean by a few of them giving the rest a bad name. Sounds like my experience. I got a taxi from my hotel to the Vatican Museums for €22 and that included a winding ride around the streets of Rome because of construction. The driver was great (Verona 308 was his cab). After the visit to the museum and Vatican courtyard, I made my way to the taxi stand at San Pietro. The driver first asked how many (one) and then quoted me €38!!!! OMG. I told him, "It's a €20 ride!" He mumbled something about the traffic. 😅 "No, thanks, I'll walk." My hotel was near the Colosseum so he probably could have picked up a fare easily enough there. Yes, I ended up walking and it was almost 4 km from the taxi stand but I sure saw a lot of Rome. 😅

@@chronic2023 I'm glad you were able to walk back to your hotel - it's too bad there was not another taxi in the line you could have taken. I advise writing down the address of your hotel if you know where you are staying when you arrive at the airport in Rome and give this to the taxi driver....Then get some hotel business cards when you arrive at your hotel and use these when your away from your hotel and use these hotel business cards the same way. Writing down destination addresses you know in advance will also help the taxi driver make the transaction more smooth.

This is excellent advice! I've heard from some people that they forgot the name of the hotel where they were staying and had a hard time getting back to their hotel. Thanks for sharing!

Great advice, especially about not handing over money until you're outside the car, with your luggage, and after the driver confirms it is the correct amount (and has change in hand, if applicable). Unscrupulous drivers might take your 50€ bill then quickly switch it with another bill, e.g. a 20€ then claim that you owe the difference, e.g. you need to pay another 30€. Passengers who are tired might be fooled; others might pay to avoid the conflict/hassle.
@Romewise8 ай бұрын
Thanks for your comments. Yes, this is the scam I hear about most often and I think they know it works because visitors are tired and just want to get to their destination. In any case, really most drivers are honest, but if you get an unscrupulous one, it helps to be prepared!

Thank you for this video - my husband always says to me, why do you watch so much youtube on places we are going to by the time we get there it won't be exciting as you'll have seen it all already !! My response is, if I come away with one tiny little piece of information then it's worth it and this video is a perfect example of that. I had no idea about the fixed price taxi fare only being applicable to accom within the Aurelian Walls or that the taxi should be registered in the city and having now heard that I have changed our accomodation booking to one within the walls. I was undecided as to which place I wanted to stay in and this has made the decision a little easier. Thank you

I found this video very informative and helpful for navigating taxis in Rome. I was there this week and noticed it is crucial to always look at the side of the car to confirm it’s an official Rome taxi and ask the driver to turn the meter on (unless to/from airport flat rate). Unfortunately, in my experience around 50% of taxis in tourist spots might try to overcharge or refuse to use the meter unless specifically asked. Staying aware of these tips can help ensure a fair ride. Thanks for sharing this valuable information!

Useful as always thank you. Although I speak Italian well, I’ve had problems with touts who try to grab my baggage - particularly at Ciampino - so as to escort me fairly insistently to a pay desk which would lead to a trip in a shared 10-seater waiting in one of the outer car parks. Those trips can sometimes cost less, but they take two hours while everyone is dropped off. I’ve even had them try to say that the payment is for the regular white cabs at the taxi stand and that the method of payment has now been updated into prepayment at a desk. Elsewhere (Cagliari) I’ve had them grab my bags and proceed at pace out into the car park. The remedy is to ignore them, protest firmly if they try to grab a bag and to insist on the registered Roma can in line only. Wearing a mask helps avoid eye contact with them. Once I alleged that I was COVID+ but it didn’t repel them!

Just back from a short visit - our first - to Rome. This video was super helpful, and we used the advice to get the fixed price €50 Euro taxi to and from the airport. We also downloaded the ITTaxi app, but we ended up never using it or taxis. In the end, we just enjoyed walking everywhere. We stayed near Trev Fountrain, and I think the longest walk we had was to the Vatican City or maybe to Travestere one evening, about 30 minutes or so. But the walks were beautiful, with amazing architecture and sights around every corner. And whilst walking. every now and again, we might just stop at a street-side bar/cafe for a coffee or cold beer. I think we may have missed some of this atmosphere in a Taxi. Although we did clock up 80,000 steps (51km!!) during our 3 days by walking everywhere. (although I think most of that was walking the corridors of the VC Museum or the grounds of Palatine Hill!!). Thank you for your taxi advice :)

I was just in Rome. Got a good, honest driver to take me to the Vatican Museums from my hotel east of the Colosseum. €22. Because of construction and one-way streets, you may get the impression that the driver is "taking you for a ride" price wise. In fact, Rome is a bit of a mess to get around in. On the way back, I went to a taxi stand east of the Vatican and the driver quoted me €38 for the ride back. 😅😅😅 No, thanks. My feet were killing me but there was NO way I was paying €38 for a €20 ride.

Great job avoiding that overly-expensive taxi ride! I love walking in Rome but sometimes one is just too tired. If there were no other taxis in the queue, I'd have called for one, or gone to the next taxi stand. Or taken the bus! But the good thing is you were savvy enough to know not to get into that taxi. Good job!

My experience in my just concluded 5day trip to Rome 1. Drivers are honest, mostly drive by aged person, you are lucky if they know English, use google translate 2. No issue with Amex card, tap or punch 4. After booking, generally taxi comes very first and they charge on the meter, 5 There is a nice Rank we find after we finshed the Vatican and went to the bridge to see the castle Sant'Angelo, Rank was next to Bridge entry. You can go tye beautiful restaurant just across the road(right to crissing) Locanda dell'Angelo Ristorante Pizzeria Braceria if you are hungry after tye visit. Just taste their 🍕, delicious.

LOL I LOVE SCIASCIA Cafe’, just remember there is a difference between chocolate coffee and chocolate capuce. If you go in there and ask for chocolate coffee you will get a tiny cup of very intense Espresso laced with equally intense dark chocolate. See if you can get a mound of Panna Cream to go with. Otherwise just remember to ask for Chocolate Capuce. I still make this mistake, it takes an astute customer or sharp Barista to remind me of the difference.

If you could walk to your hotel after arriving at Roma Termini, then it may be more economical, but if you have to take a taxi at Roma Termini to reach your hotel, it’s best to take a City of Rome taxi at the airport. Also with construction going on now in Piazza del Cinquecento, you have to walk farther down to the NE corner to find the queue and it’s a hassle. And scam white cabs are cruising the streets.

@@Romewise Reading this post, Can you tell us what part of the taxi we can expect to see the meter?
@Romewise6 ай бұрын
The meter can be in different places depending on the driver and his/her car. You might see the meter on or near the rearview mirror or close to the radio in the center. Either way, the meter should be visible to you from where you sit. If you can't see the meter, ask the driver to show you where it is. @@apheenaroebuck-webb3385

I wonder if the taxi you got even had a meter. Maybe that's why you didn't see it. 😢

Most taxi drivers in Rome were pretty good. I used the app and I went to taxi ranks without much trouble. At Fiumicino, however, I had trouble getting a taxi to agree to take me to the Spanish Steps area for the fixed price listed right on the side of the car. I called to all of the drivers and one agreed to take me for only 2€ more, which I accepted. If no one would have accepted, it would have been the Leonardo Express for me.
@Romewise8 ай бұрын
Thanks for sharing your experience. Wow, it's disappointing that so many drivers would refuse to honor the fixed rate. Good for you that you stood your ground!
@TheRomanPilgriminPerson4 ай бұрын
Anytime you take a taxi at FCO to an area inside the Aurelian Walls, the Fixed Rate kicks in. You get in the cab and when you get out of the cab and get your luggage you pay 50 Euro. The only other option is the meter if you go outside the Walls. There is no agreement, you don’t make agreements, you don’t ask a taxi driver if s/he agrees with the fixed rate, you have to know where you are going. I simply place the fare on the seat if the driver violates the fixed fare, or the meter for that matter. I’ve had Rome taxi drivers charge me double over the meter. I pay the meter or the fixed fare.

Elyssa, you refer to the limousine type transportation as NCC. Is that a term used by locals? For example,iIf I want to have my hotel call a car of this type for me, should I refer to it as NCC?
@Romewise12 күн бұрын
Not so much locals but anyone in the tourism industry in Rome knows what it is - it means "noleggio con conducente" or, car hire with chauffeur. Yes, if you ask your hotel to arrange for an NCC car for you, they will know exactly what you mean.

Thank you so much! I really appreciate it! You can get taxis 24/7 (unless there is a taxi strike!) You will find them at taxi ranks all around the city. If you are staying at a hotel, you can have your concierge call one for you, if you like. Either way, I suggest getting a taxi by no later than 6:50, so you make it in plenty of time and can relax. Have a great visit!

We will be a party of 5 which includes 2 kids ages 3 and 7. Any tips for getting a taxi with a car seat? Are car seats required in taxis in Rome? Would 5 people be able to fit in a regular taxi?
@Romewise8 күн бұрын
Car seats are not required but if you have a family of five and also want a car seat, you'll need to request this. You can request these features when you booking using one of the apps I mentioned. Also if you stay at a hotel and ask your concierge to help, they can book for you by calling the taxi company. If you just arrive at a taxi rank, you'll have to wait for a car large enough for all of you. Five passengers cannot fit into a normal-sized sedan so you'll need a larger vehicle, usually a van. There are surcharges for extra people. You can see the rates here: romamobilita.it/en/moving-rome/using-taxi-service While this is an official page of Rome's transport service, there are outdated taxi rates as they have recently gone up. However, you can use this to see the supplemental charges for additional luggage and people.

Tell the driver to turn on the meter and if he or she doesn't, tell him you want to get out. Then get out and walk away.

I was there for 8 days and avoided them. I walk to the train station everyday. It was 15 minutes away. Tip one make sure your hotel isn’t far from the metro. Remember cabs will charge you $25 euros going and coming. Do yourself a favor and get you a weekly metro card and you will do just fine. Octavio station is 15 minutes walk to the Vatican. While I was there I saw undercover cops pulling over taxis left and right. Make sure your hotel is centrally located to avoid being dependent on a cab. I only took a taxi too and from the airport and did just fine and did not need a bus either. Trust me you really don’t need one in main parts of Rome. I saved allot of money by avoiding them. They are really not necessary while in Rome.

@Romewise4 ай бұрын
If you are in a line for taxis, let them know you have 5 people, and the drivers will pass over you until a large enough car shows up. They are used to this issue and have an honor system among them.

I would like to try ItTaxi app and thank you for all your wonderful videos. Can I use this app to prebook a taxi a couple of days before I need it? I require a very early morning pickup from my apartment to another area of the city (Rome) that is only about 10 minutes away. Can you pass on the first white taxi at a taxi stand if you think the vehicle is too small or if you don't agree to the price they want to charge (before you get in)? Is it allowable to move down the line of taxis at the stand? I don't want to cause a scene and don't want to be given the cold shoulder by the rest of the taxis in line. Is there a law as to how many people a white taxi can carry? Is four the max?
@Romewise26 күн бұрын
With IT Taxi yes you can book in advance. If you arrive at a taxi rank, you need to go to the first taxi. If they do not work for you for some reason, let them know. They will tell you to try the next one. But in general, you should take the taxis in order of where they are in the rank. If a car is physically too small for your group, or they can't accept credit cards because their POS is broken, or some other such reason, the drivers will understand. But it might be tricky if it's just a preference for a car model. As for the price, white taxis turn on the meter so there should not be a pre-negotiated price before you get in. If you are at the airport and ask them to confirm the fixed rate to a location within the Aurelian walls, and they quote you a rate that is higher than the official rate, then yes, you could change to a different taxi.

@Romewise8 ай бұрын
Well to be honest, since I take taxis quite often in Rome, I find that they range in age from mid-20s and up. But in Italy, usually when people have a job, they have it for life and so whoever you see driving a taxi is probably doing so as his long-term job. @@you4raj

You say that Uber only gives you the 'Black' cab/limo option, but my Uber app shows, and we have used recently the 'White' cab option in Rome. You might want to take another look at the app.
@Romewise6 ай бұрын
Yes, it's true that the Uber app shows white taxis. It means that Uber subcontracts the white taxis. What I meant when I said that the only option you get with Uber was Uber black, i.e. a limo driver, is that we don't have here the kind of Uber service where a regular person drives their car and acts as an Uber driver. That has been strictly forbidden here. So yes, you can get a white taxi through Uber as you could through another taxi app, or you will get an NCC (limo) driver.
