I'm trying to book a guided tour for the Colosseum in mid-August (that's when we're visiting). The options available are 10:20 am, 11:00 am or 3:15pm. We will be arriving into Rome the night before at 9pm, and this is our first visit, so we still have to figure out where to have breakfast, and hot to get to the colosseum. Taking all that into consideration, and weather and crowds in mid-August, what time would be the best tour to book?
@walther.laufer-683 ай бұрын
I'd avoid the heat, so early if possible. Depends where your hotel is situated. Ask them for a taxi. Don't worry too much about breakfast, just grab and go, there are lots of spots to grab brunch, normally all you need is a quick coffee ☕ and pastry 🥐 (cornetto) and keep hydrated with water. If necessary there is Via San Giovanni di Laterano leading up towards to the Caelian hill to the said Lateran Basilica - the cathedral church of Rome. It's on the far side of the Flavian amphitheatre, as you walk up past the ruins of Forum on your right side & Trajan's market on the left. There are numerous cafes, pizzerias & restaurants on this street and adjacent streets. Check out San Clemente Basilica - a 11th century medieval church built on a much earlier church, dedicated to the third pope Clement. Its built on a much earlier pagan Roman shrine. Not only beautiful but 'temperature wise' cool. Hope that helps.
@Romewise3 ай бұрын
Thanks so much, Walter, for answering. I agree with much of what you said. To the OP, I would book the Colosseum for 10:20 am or 3:15pm. You don't want to be at the Colosseum in the middle of the day when the sun is directly overhead as there is no place to sit down and no shade. Remember that your ticket comes with a one-time entry to the Roman Forum / Palatine Hill, which you can use at any time up to 24 hours on either side of your Colosseum ticket. So if you get the 3:15pm ticket, you could visit the Roman Forum / Palatine Hill in the morning, take a short lunch break, and then head to the Colosseum in time for your 3:15 entry. If you do this, I suggest visiting the Roman Forum first, as it has the least amount of shade and almost nowhere to sit, and then heading to the Palatine Hill (all part of the same park), as you will find a LOT of shade and places to sit. So you'd want to be in the Colosseum and the Roman Forum either first thing in the morning or later in the afternoon. The Palatine Hill is the only part of this park you can comfortably visit in the middle of the day.

I was there early-mid August and can definitely confirm the heat is crazy during the day! Some summers the heat is above normal, and we saw 38 Celsius with actual feels like over 45. BUT don’t be discouraged as I honestly felt like there were fewer tourists than June-July and Sept-Oct! Just be safe, bring a double walled water bottle tumbler and use all the free and safe water fountains! Do as much as you can before noon or after 4ish to avoid that direct sun.

It just hit me that my upcoming trip in late November might be affected by all the construction! I saw something on social media that said all the fountains in Piazza Navona are currently under scaffolding. :( Do you know if things will be wrapping up by late November? Luckily I have been to Rome many times before, but I am a huge fan of Baroque architecture and would be so disappointed to see my favorite works under scaffolding.

I did show the fountains in Piazza Navona and I also showed the end date for the works there, which is currently set for December 23, 2024. Hello Elyssa, I have a question for you. I will be landing in Rome at 10 am on a Saturday. I was planning to visit the St Peter's Basilica & the dome. Do you suggest I visit both on Saturday afternoon? Or should I do it on Sunday? Unfortunately I am unable to do it on other days. Also, I heard that the St Peter's Basilica is closed in the morning on Sunday...
@Romewise3 ай бұрын
You don't say where you are flying FROM. If you will be super jet lagged, climbing the dome may not be so easy unless you get a nap first. Saint Peter's Basilica is open 365 days a year. The dome is also open 365 days a year. The basilica is only closed on Wednesday mornings when the pope holds the Papal Audience. It's also closed during papal masses. You might be thinking of the Vatican Museums where the Sistine Chapel is. The museums are closed on Sundays except for the last Sunday of the month, when they are open in the morning and free. SO in answer to your question, you can visit Saint Peter's basilica and climb the dome on either Saturday or Sunday, as you prefer. These videos may be helpful: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eGmVppWkqsyqfqs kzbin.info/www/bejne/q4a1gIqGeLyepMU kzbin.info/www/bejne/jXe4ZIZ9erZjmaM

@@Romewise Thank you very much for the detailed feedback! It's really appreciated. I'm from Quebec (Canada), so I'm guessing it's not a good idea to visit without taking a nap as you're suggesting. I watched the videos you recommended and I see why visiting on Sunday is a better idea (since the Vatican museums are closed, it should be less crowded. I am already planning to visit them in a different day). Could you let me know at what time is the papal mass in the morning? Do I have time to visit the Basilica & the dome before they close it down for the mass? If I do not have time, at what time does the papal mass end so I can start my visit in the Basilica & dome?
@Romewise3 ай бұрын
@@tonylelavallois5950 So there are mostly NO papal masses on Sundays. They are on specific days for specific events like Easter, Christmas, or other holy days. You can see when the pope will hold a papal mass here: www.vatican.va/content/vatican/en.html Just click the calendar and look for the month in question. His schedule is usually updated no more than a week or so in advance. So on a regular Sunday, the basilica will be open. Hope that helps!

Thank you for another wonderfully informative video! It has been so exciting to plan a trip to Rome after 20+ years. I have a question for you, if I may. With the problem of mass tourism, should I even come? I don't want to burden Italians even more. I am trying to stay in a hotel vs a rental but it is hard as there will be 4-6 of us. I see the pictures of the crowds. I have read the news about how Spain has had protests, spraying tourists with water, anti- tourism graffiti and signs. I don't want to contribute to the possibility of that one day being fed up Italians. Do Italians want us there? Would they rather we didn't come? I am and have always been an extremely respectful traveler. I feel that maybe I should respect their wishes and not visit. What do you think? Thank you for your time in answering my question!
@Romewise3 ай бұрын
Thank you for your kind comments. I am glad you found the video helpful. It's very thoughtful of you to be concerned about being "part of the problem." There is a lot of talk about this lately in the media and I think it's good to have the conversation. With the explosion in tourism, even before the pandemic, I think people who are tourists as well as people who live in places with a lot of tourism are smart to think about how to handle all this growth. I think if you are aware of the places you visit, and are respectful, you and people who like to travel should continue to do so. Travel brings the world together and opens doors. To be honest, the only people I hear regularly complaining about tourists are other tourists. So many people who live in Rome and Italy work directly or indirectly in tourism, that it would be hard to find people saying they don't want tourists. I am sure there are, but I just haven't heard anyone say that. I have a lot of Italian friends and nobody has said it to me. And I doubt it's because I work in tourism but rather because they simply accept that when you live in a place like Rome and Florence, people will visit your city. That's just my take but of course, you should do what is right for you.

I am not sure about that. I think a lot of prices were raised post-pandemic. Also, there are A LOT of new hotels under construction, so there will be even more hotel rooms available. Nobody is saying there will definitely be higher prices for things and I am not sure there will be. But nobody knows.
