I volunteered on engineering work parties for the line in the 80's before moving away. Not been back. I fully realise its the end of the main season but that track has deteriorated way beyond what it was in the period I served. Quite shocked, actually!

Not necessarily, it happens all the time regardless of gauge, usually by the time the sparks are visible, they're harmless. It's sparks from underneath that start fires.
