I never thought I'd say this... But I actually miss this stuff. It's not that I don't like the new show, it's still Ron and Hicks doing their thing for the most part. But looking back I guess this was my favorite reality show. It was captivating and it sucks that it's the exact opposite of what Ronnie B wanted but it was so insane it was something I could never miss. I've missed a bunch of the new shows and find myself just scrounging KZbin for R&F clips nowadays.....

+dezfusion Ha, I'm glad you said this because I totally agree. And it's weird, because the show had this hopeless pall to it after Dave left. Listening to clips and bits, these shows have a layer of nostalgia to them. Maybe it's easier to listen because I know that there's a happy ending (the Bennington show) on the other end.

Ron has stated that Fez's insanity those final years of the show was about 50/50 real to a work and he admitted half the time he didn't even know whether Fez was actually upset or just pretending to be for a radio bit. He said that after some of Fez's biggest on-air breakdowns he would just say after the show, "Oh that? I was just playing it up for the listeners." then other times he would be genuinely upset.

Fez just wanted to sit there and absorb attention and sympathy forever. He really was the purest narcissist I've ever experienced - it was so extreme that it didn't even manifest as normal arrogance or cruelty, because even that involves thinking of others in some limited way. The original sin of Ron's show is that it took in these whacky characters who would act weird like Cosmo Kramer, but it was always at least 50% not acting. Michael Richards couldn't improv as Cosmo Kramer for 3 hours a day, but Fez and the rest could because of their legit problems. Whatever was a work for radio diminished over the years into a reality show where most content (hilarious as much of it was) leaned on Fez's oblivious narcissism, or Staples's self-pitying self-destruction, or Earl's confabulating sociopathy/autism, or Dave's addictions to humiliation and alcohol, or Stanley's deep depression masked with harmless, shallow anger. Characters who weren't quite messed up enough (Shelby) or those who overcame their problems (Vito) leave, but the BLs and the the Paul Os endure (when Gale O was still alive, they mined her madness hard as well). I have loved this show, and I've never thought that people should ever apologize for being funny ... but if there are a million idiotic accusations of 'comedy going too far' or being purely exploitative, this might be the one real case. And it was downright hilarious regardless. RIP.
