On March 30, 1981 the United States had a very close call when John Hinckley, Jr. attempted to assassinate President Ronald Reagan. Bob Schieffer reports that for the past thirty years, historians are still learning about what really happened in those few bewildering minutes.

I was 14 when this happened. No one said anything about it at school; my bus driver told me when he dropped me off. My parents taught me a valuable lesson that day. They were Democrats but worried sick about President Reagan. I asked " You're Democrats; he's a Republican....what's the deal?" The answer "He's our President and a fellow human...he needs our prayers!"

I was 12 years old when President Reagan was shot. What a day that was…… our teachers in my elementary school told us to go straight home from school, no playing around. You could see the fear in people’s eyes. I ran straight home after school like a good little boy.

I was a junior in high school and left school early that day to take my mother to a doctor appointment. As I pulled into the parking lot at the doctor's office there was a bulletin on the radio. "We interrupt this program to bring you a special news bulletin...." I immediately said, "I bet the president was shot." That's what it was. She asked, "How did you know?" I said, "I didn't, but that's always the first thing that comes to mind when there's a bulletin important enough to interrupt regular programming." This was just 16 weeks after the assassination of John Lennon, so shootings were on my mind when it came to news bulletins.

Good question, and why wasn't the head of the 1981 secret service fired or forced to resign same as the current head of secret service? I believe the head of the 1981 secret service retired about 8 months later and was of retirement age. Not at all the same as being forced to resign.

I was in fifth grade performing safety patrol for the afternoon bus loading. I went to the equipment shed to pick up my sign and vest. The student attendant had a radio on in the shed. The news was the early reports of the Reagan shooting. I had to go load the buses while putting on a straight face. The kids running toward the buses knew nothing of the news. They were happy and smiling. I couldn't tell them anything. Was our new president dead? Was he hit? Was this something? Was this everything? I made it back to the shed to learn any updates. However, not much came of that. That was a difficult day.

How could the Secret Service allow someone like this to get so close coming out of this place and not confront him or tell him to move back to a certain distance before allowing the President to come out. I don’t think this was proper protection at all. You know the secret service saw him standing there and didn’t think to be curious as to how close he was. I bet procedure’s are totally different these days but it can never be totally protected 100%.

One thing that made me both giggle and emotional at the same time, was when President Reagan looked up at his Wife, Nancy Reagan, and kind of chuckled, when he told her:"Honey, I forgot to duck"! Then, when he told those in the Operating Room:"I hope you're a Republican", he heard, in response, those words that he quite possibly never thought would be said:"Mr. President, today, we're all Republicans"! Have we forgotten just what it was like, to have a President, that EVERYBODY can get behind, and support? Why must we continually label ourselves as Democratic or Republicans? The last time I checked, we're all AMERICANS! I suggest that we get back to that line of thought. If we don't... Then we'll continue the infighting amongst ourselves, until we're so torn apart, that we, as a Nation, ONE NATION UNDER GOD, will no longer be recognisable!!!

Not a chance. JFK was dead the instant the second shot blew his brains out. The only chance for Mr Parr to have even had the possibility of saving JFK was for him to be seated next to John in that back seat instead of Jackie, and when the first shot threw him up, and he grabbed his throat, Parr IMMEDIATELY grab him, throw him to the floor and lay on top of him.
